Adding schools

[edit]

Here's how to add a school, though it doesn't have to be perfect. It's okay if you're a little off; someone else may come and tidy it up.

On the appropriate page (Alabama–Kentucky, Louisiana–North Dakota, Ohio–Wyoming, International, Faculty, graduate and professional students), follow the "[edit]" link next to the state name of the school(s) you want to add. For schools offering opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate/professional, please add at least the school name to the faculty/graduate/professional list.

Add the following Wiki markup:

* [[w:1|]] (2) - 3 [4]

Or even just

* 1 (2) - 3 [4]

Replace 1 with the university name, 2 with the City and state (list of two letter abbreviations), 4 with a URL to the pertinent page. For 3, copy or rewrite the pertinent information. For universities offering accomodations for graduate students, professional students, medical students, law students, or faculty, make the relevant parts bold. Do this either by highlighting and clicking the B button above the edit window, or by putting three single-quotes (''') on either side of the text.

Please try to enter the university name in the edit summary box. Choose "Save page".

I hope these instructions are easy enough to follow. Clarify if you want. --Christopherlin 22:10, 5 September 2005 (UTC), updated 01:00, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

While I realize this may not be typical of news articles, it seemed like important information that needed immediate distribution. Feel free to edit it, but if you feel it is inappropriate for WN, a correction would be preferred over deletion. Deadsalmon 21:37, 2 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

No it's not what Wikinews would normally consider a "story"... but if we can't make exceptions at times like these, we'd be a bunch of assholes Dan100 (Talk) 22:54, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

With articles such as this I would like to see on the talk page a section titled "Original Reporting notes", or similar, so it is easy to find the information about the original reporting. - Borofkin 00:26, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Undergraduate, Graduatate/Law Schools, and Research

[edit]

As this list becomes longer should we divide it into various degree types? Ex U of Alabama Law School has a "Visting" program setup so that Law Students don't have to go through the trouble of transfering and transfering back. According to the article they pay no tutition also Campus News Article --Mitrebox 22:53, 2 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

is this original reporting? The information seems to be gathered from a bunch of sources... so much so I think it's original reporting. I didn't contribute so I won't add the template myself but I think it should be.

Categorized by state. --Christopherlin 00:54, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Page is getting pretty long. We should start to think about how to split it into smaller, bite-sized chunks. My first impulse is to divide it into undergraduate only and undergrad/grad/professional/faculty, because that will definitely make the latter information easier to find-- but it's probably also counterintuitive. Any ideas? --Amvhoward

  • Two questions:
    • 1) Should we include links to other sources that are attempting to accomplish the same task (i.e. finding avaliable colleges to the dislocated students)?
    • 2) (I'm assuming the answer is yes) How shall we go about adding those links? (ex: http://www.elearners.com/Katrina/index.asp) --tyehoward

Displaced students coming to Texas A&M

[edit]

My husband and I live one mile from Texas A & M and would like to offer free room and board to two (same sex) non-smoking students. We live close to the A & M bus line, have an on-line computer availabe, as well. Our home is walking distance to a grocery store, about 10 restratrunts, Home Depot, shopping center, yet we live on a private road in a very quite neighborhood. We actually don't have extra parking, but arrangements could be made with other neighbors. There are only 32 homes on our road. We've had college students stay in our home before, although it's been many years. We're ready, call and come. If you're staying @ the Astrodomewhen you receive this message, our son Matthew Wood is pastoral counseling. He could finalized and make arrangements to get you to College Station. Hoping to meet some of you soon.

Merge from other lists

LiveJournal user alchemy_gryph is maintaining a list on the Academics Anonymous community, with comments coming in very quickly. A-M and N-Z

Here's alchemy_gryph's format for contributions:

  1. The university
  2. A link to the page with the university's statement on acceptance of "Katrina students." A link to the uni webpage often doesn't help very much if I'm left searching around for the official policy. Some unis don't yet have formal pages up on how they're planning to deal with things, so if you are acting on information received from an official email, please include that instead. I'd prefer to include links to policies because otherwise each school blurb becomes prohibitively lengthy.
  3. If you have the time for it, a copy-pasted blurb summarizing the uni's policy on accepting students. Good information includes how many they're taking, any important stipulations (housing/fees), if they're taking graduate/professional students or faculty, and access to libraries or labs.
  4. If you are an alumnus/a of the university, teach at it, or are otherwise affiliated with it or familiar with the area and can assist students looking to move.

A list sorted alphabetically reformatted from the lists linked below is at Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/Unsorted. Also, at User:Christopherlin/College temp, there are some that need more extensive cleaning up. --Christopherlin 08:58, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm starting to merge that intensive list on LJ into this post. Would it be appropriate for me to list the contact information of students/alum/staff who have listed their LJs as further contact information/help for navigating university bureaucracy? Or should I just stick to the official contact info? Yueni 19:59, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

This is a remarkable piece of work: the sort of collaborative reporting that gives people the chance to do something useful in response to the news and Wikinews the place to come for new information, the purest sort of news. Well done to all those who've put in the effort. ClareWhite 14:24, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Just an update to say that as far as merging Livejournal lists goes, I've merged mine, Minervacat's, and poisonwithjest's (http://www.naicu.edu/HEA/KatrinaEfforts.shtml) lists. I will start working on putting in the schools that are at the bottom of this discussion page -- thanks to whoever thought to list the schools alphabetically. Once those are crossed out, I have a few non-Livejournal lists to work off of. Hopefully soon, since a lot of schools are closing the window of time for displaced student applications :p ziasudra 11:20 p.m., EST, September 6, 2005.

== Job listing for student displaced by Hurricane Katrina's ==

I am an international strength and conditioning coach. I am looking for a student, displaced by Hurricane Katrina, to assist me with my current project. The successful candidate must have good research and writing skills and a good working knowledge of physiology and kinesiology. In addition, knowledge of snowboarding is a plus. Naturally, I would be willing to compensate the successful candidate for their time and effort. Please feel free to have any qualified applicants contact me at my e-mail address. If this email was addressed incorrectly please forward to the appropriate person. Thank you for your help. DKFit Dorota Konecky dkoneckyfitness@yahoo.com [[w:|]December 12, 2005

LJ contacts

[edit]

Whoa, who started adding in all the LJ contacts from the list? I'm guessing Ziasudra, by sheer number. I imagine nobody will mind terribly. I'm just surprised that I hadn't noticed before now... --Christopherlin 06:39, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I did do a bunch today, but it was someone else who started the list. The instruction was to cross items off as they're added/merged, so I assume anyone can pick up halfway and run with it. If it's one thing I learned from this project, it's that there're a whole lot of colleges and universities in the U.S.! --Ziasudra 18:24, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I meant the "Livejournal user ... is ... willing to help" ones. Was this you as well? --Christopherlin 01:02, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Nope, those aren't mine. Maybe someone who merged the academics_anon list before I started doing this did a copy and paste from that list? --Ziasudra 03:41, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Splitting the list

[edit]

List's gotten way too long; time to start splitting. I've started Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans graduate students for grad and professional and faculty stuff, because it's the simplest split to make, but it's not going to have much impact. I would recommend that further splits bei either along strictly alphabetical (by state) lines, or else, as I mentioned to Christopherlin by "schools that will take all comers" vs. "schools that will accomodate local students"; the latter being more difficult for us, but more practical from an end-user perspective. --Amvhoward 20:30, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Good idea for splitting the list (to you or whoever did that). I like how the structure of by-state search is still there, but that one doesn't need to wait until the entire list loads up before looking for schools. Seeing how I'm not Web design-savvy at all, I will continue adding schools until I see a new classification system shows up. Sound good? --Ziasudra 23:59, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Graduate students

[edit]

Amvhoward's comment below was originally posted the discussion for the graduate student article. --Christopherlin 00:55, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've started splitting up Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students to try and bring it back to a more reasonable size. This first split is the easiest to make, though also the least helpful. --Amvhoward 20:26, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Updating Enrollment Status

[edit]

Can anyone propose a good way of tracking which schools are still accepting students, and which ones aren't? I thought about going through the list to put a Update Sept. ## (date): Application deadline passed. note in front of all the schools that have indicated "registration through" dates earlier than September 13. But that risks shutting out schools that have announced a deadline, but might still be taking applications in response to students' extenuating circumstances. Any ideas? --Ziasudra 04:38, 14 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

A way to accommodate that might be to say something along the lines of: "Originally indicated application deadline has passed. Contact school for further details."
Since that's a bit wordy, it could be a general statement listed as a footnote, and the schools to which it applies could be marked with some appropriate symbol. --64.142.80.51 21:35, 14 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Cascading protection

I recommend that this article be cascade protected, to protect the transcluded subpages.

And at the top of the article, the header about adding schools to this list should be removed. —Zachary talk 06:49, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
