Broadcast notes

[edit]

I caught the 'highlights' show on BBC Two at around 15:00, which shows basically 100% of the race. "Double quotes" are exact and 'single quotes' are paraphrases. What was happening when is my own observations; non-attributed details and quotes are from the commentary team. Here's my notes, typed into Notepad as the race went on:

First start aborted with an amber light
Second parade lap; race length reduced by one lap (57 laps instead of 58)
First corner crash, a Williams and a Caterham - yellow flag
"Engine is not running smoothly" - team radio on lap 1, Vettel's car
Perez for Froce India with tyre puncture into pits on lap 2
Lap 2: "Lewis [Hamilton] we need to retire... save the engine, save the engine"
Lap 3: "Lewis just stay out, stay out, just keep on rolling"
Williams team has new, lighter livery
Lap 5: Yellow flags remain
Replay of crash on lap 1: Kobiashi in Caterham locks up, rams Massa from behind
Another angle: Kobiashi hit Raikonen, damaged wheel/suspension, then rammed Massa
New points system on driver's racing licences for transgressions this year, similar to UK public roads
'might apply to Kobiashi'
Massa, Kobiashi both retire
Lap 10: Botas hits wall, back-right tyre loosens and sheds over several seconds, wheel rim broken, tryre sheds in middle of road
Commentators suspect safety car will be out; be a "brave marshall" who recovers tyre without safety car
Botas pits, back on-track for lap 11, tyre still there with yellow flags waving
Lap 12: Wheel rim also on track, Safety Car deployed (no overtaking, stay behind car)
Lap 12/13: Cars take advantage of safety car to pit; Ricciardo, Button (1st to do so), Rosberg "all the leaders"
Lap 15: Safety car remains
Ricciardo teamate Vettel retired with engine trouble
Vettel: "Going to be a long season"
Racing resumes at lap 16
Lap 19: Vettel remains on-scene monitoring the race; Coulthard: 'learning'
Lap 20: Ricciardo (3rd place) radio - "We do not need to save fuel"
Commentators have discussed teams are now seriously considering not starting with less than max fuel allowed
Fuel limit rules are several years old. FIA 'never imagined' being able to do races with >100kg fuel
Hamilton (retired): "One of the cylinders, I think, was not firing"
"Its tough for everyone but that's the way it is", "we're not the only ones"
"My mistake[... should have braked earlier, and I apologise to Felipe [Massa]" - Kobiashi
Lap 29: "Stop the car, stop the car, engine oil pressure" - Other Caterham, debut of Eriksson, pulls up and retires (yellow flag)
"He cannot do a start like that, Every time" will cause a crash - Massa on Kobiashi
First-lap crash will be investigated after the race
Lap 31: Maldonado pulls up, retires (Lotus)
Lap 32: Yellow flags, "car will be easilyy recovered"
Lap 33/34: Small piece breaks off nose of Button's car in pit
Last year was worst-ever for Williams team
Random thought: Damn, those Williams cars are VERY white now
Lap 41: Debutant Kvyat in 10th, "looking to score points on his debut" (first ten cars score points)
Lap 42: Interesting aerial shot, can see busy traffic on a road running parallel to racetrack (track is clearly street circuit, with road markings for normal traffic)
Lap 45: We see another new addition, a red flashing light on the rear of Verne's car, indicating electrical power not being used ie may slow down, warning to car behind
Lap 45: Grojean (Lotus) pulls over and retires; yellow flag
Lap 52: Bottas hits 5th place
"More cars running than we expected with four laps to go" 14 cars running
Kvyat will be youngest-ever points scorer, slightly younger than Vettel when he scored points on his debut

Finish line:
Nico Rosberg (his 1st win in Australia)(100th win for a Mercedes-engine'd car)
Daniel Ricciardo (first ever podium finish)
Kevin Magnussen (his debut!)
Jensen Button
Fernando Alonso
Valteri Bottas
Nico Hulkenberg
Kimi Raikkonen
Jean-Eric Vergne
Daniil Kvyat

First Aussie on the podium since Australian GP became a World Chapionship event
"Fascination throughout the field"
"Such a pleasure to have such a fast car" - Rosberg

Watching BBC News right now, I was distracted and had missed the point of Hamilton's retirement during the race. It was lap 4. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 18:05, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
