Talk:Scottish university football club under investigation over 'blackface' event
Add topicOR notes
[edit]Below is a copy of the email I wrote to Professor John Gardner, Stirling Students Union President Amy McDermott and Sports President Chris Priddle: "Dear Sir / Madam
I am writing an article for Wikinews, the free news source, regarding a serious incident which occurred in Stirling yesterday, Thursday 5 February. You have told us you have launched an investigation into this incident.
It is my understanding that at least 30 members of Stirling University FC were engaging in an 'African Cup of Nations' social event in Stirling on Thursday 5 February. I’m not sure how many members were dressed in football kits and appeared to have daubed large sections of their skin in such a way as to make them appear to black but I do know there was a significant number of them at least. I was actually at Fubar yesterday and witnessed some men dressed in football kits with blackface.
I was wondering if I could get comment from you regarding the following: What you know so far about what happened in Stirling on 5 February 2015, including what Stirling University FC’s arrangements and intentions for the 'African Cup of Nations' social were and how many people attended The extent to which you agree with the account of events I have given above Whether Stirling University FC or the Sports President believes the actions of some of the club's members on that night were acceptable What action the university intends to take if university individuals are determined to have committed wrongdoing, including what can be done to ensure incidents of this nature are not repeated It is clear to me that the university strives to be as inclusive and diverse as it possibly can be and would not want to have its reputation tarnished by inaccurate information, which is why I wish to get your perspective for your this story.
A response from you at soon as it is possible for you to provide one would be much appreciated.
Yours sincerely Ryan Peteranna Wikinews"
No response at time of writing. If you have any further questions, reviewer, please do ask.
- Apologies for not providing a signature on that last post. Communications Officer David Tripp replied to my email by reiterating the university's position. It reads:
"Further to your email below, please find below our statement, attributed to a University of Stirling spokesperson please:
"The University of Stirling has been made aware of incidents involving a number of students on the night of Thursday 5 February and an investigation has been launched with immediate effect. The University and the Students’ Union are committed to promoting equality and diversity, through a range of policies, procedures and initiatives, and believe all staff, students and members of wider society should be treated with dignity and respect. The University treats issues relating to racism with the utmost seriousness and will respond robustly to any behaviours that do not meet with our values and expectations.”
I'm not sure how to write that in the article other than to say they 'would not comment further', although please do correct this if you disagree. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 16:18, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
