It seemed important, for neutrality, not to mislead the reader into inferring the Quran burnings were a deliberate insult — we really don't know one way or t'other. The clarifying detail that the burnings took place in a rubbish pit seems to me to stave off such an inference, correctly leaving the reader to wonder about motivation. I decided the addition was within my purview since it was (a) in itself a small detail and (b) indirectly, I believe, a removal of information.
