Getting started as a contributor
|
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. | |
|
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

-- Wikinews Welcome (talk) 14:23, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi
[edit]Would you like to start a news article on a certain topic?
Thanks.
@Dsuke1998AEOS BigKrow (talk) 22:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Certainly, but first I'm going to familiarize myself with the policies and guidelines and the style guide. Thankfully there is far less such pages here than on English Wikipedia. :) Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:21, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Enjoy your time here! @Dsuke1998AEOS BigKrow (talk) 22:23, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, would you like to be added to the 'users who can make article revisions by request' group? Then you'll get 'Minor revision requested' or 'Major revision requested' notifications in Echo (top right corner of the page) when someone requests an article edit. This contribution would help a lot to get the articles written and published faster. This is particularly fruitful to be involved into this if you're often logged into the wiki and reading the notifications on it, and have time to make the edits. If you agree, I will add you to the list at the {{pingrr}} page. What do you think? Gryllida (talk) 04:48, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Yes, I would like to be added to that template. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Done added. Thanks a lot. Let me know anytime if you have any questions about the revision requests or anything. Gryllida (talk) 19:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Yes, I would like to be added to that template. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks Gryllida (talk) 13:51, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, I voted there. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:35, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
Hi, how do you read me
[edit]Hi, I included you at your request into the "pingrr" list recently. You'd've received a few dozens of "RR" echo notifications in the last two weeks. Did they arrive? Could you please tell me what is preventing you from responding to them?
Revision requests are an essential part of the collaboration process, and your participation is vitally important. Please provide me with the feedback, it would help me a lot with making this process more efficient and easier for you to use.
Thanks. Gryllida (talk) 05:22, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Sorry for not being as active as I (or you) would like to be. I was concentrating on writing new stories, but given the recent declines of my articles it may be better for me to perform the requested edits instead. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:52, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
Terrorism article.....
[edit]I'd like to publish that, but: Can you take a good look at the first sentence. The 'Thursday' thing and then a totally separate day are confusing me. Otherwise: Looks pretty tight!--Bddpaux (talk) 16:09, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
Top article in April!
[edit]
Thank you for contributing to the article titled "Streaming platform Twitch bans rapper Kanye West seven minutes into first stream for performing "Nazi salute"." The article has the most number of page-views of all articles published in April of 2025 and currently the most views of the year.
As one of our newest members, you have hit the ground running! I'm glad you've joined us and specifically with the aim of helping us improve the project. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:11, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- This article is primarily the merit of Lofi Gurl – I merely expanded some bare citations! – , though it would be entertaining to see an article about a bunch of ant smugglers receiving a slap on the wrist getting more attention than the one about the pope's election. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 17:06, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
FYI
[edit]Once a reviewer starts working on an article, it's usually theirs to review from that point on. No point in pinging other reviewers. (cc @Michael.C.Wright) I don't wanna touch it as I risk spending enormous amounts of time learning the event context and vocabulary, and may miss the previous reviewer's points nevertheless. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 09:57, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- Apologies Gryllida, I should have known better. I was getting concerned that the article wouldn't published in time (I still do), and I pinged other active reviewers, but I also understand that reviewer time is limited. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:27, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- I suggest writing an article about the election outcome.
- Can you also invite someone from a sister wiki and ask to edit developing articles here? That task is in demand, and is more time consuming than reviewing. If they want, they can join the {{pingrr}} working group.
- How is that working for you? Are you comfortable with helping with requested revisions?
- Thanks. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 12:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- There is an article about a rally in the Newsroom. Perhaps it could be clarified. I waa mostly outdoors and could not edit it much on the weekend. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 12:38, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- I'm currently working on the article about the Neighborhood Hills chase. After that, I will take a look at Union members rally for increase of worker compensation support in Sydney CBD. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:47, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
Using template:w
[edit]Just a quick heads-up, not a complaint. When using {{w}}, there's no need to number the parameters or include extra whitespace.
For example: {{w |1=Boniface Mwangi}} should be {{w|Boniface Mwangi}}
{{w |1=Tanzania |2=Tanzanian}} should be {{w|Tanzania|Tanzanian}}
I don't think we've ever run into this before, but the extra spaces or numbered parameters interfered with the script that generates lead summaries on the Main page.
Minor issues like this are usually caught during review or when the article is pushed to the Main page, but using {{w}} correctly helps streamline things.
Also, if the {{w}} link resolves to a local category, please change it to standard wikitext like [[Category:Some category]]. Not mandatory, reviewers often handle it, but doing so ahead of time reduces workload and speeds up review. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 22:45, 13 June 2025 (UTC)
- I'm following the discussion at WN:Water cooler/proposals#Proposed amendment to Wikinews:Style guide#Wikilinking an article, and I had decided that I wouldn't use numbered parameters any more (a stylistic choice that I had imported from my WP editing, but is clearly problematic here). And I'll also follow your suggestion to use normal wikilinks when it comes to local categories. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 23:04, 13 June 2025 (UTC)
- LOL, my bad. You even started the discussion. 🤦♂️ —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 00:01, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
Welcome back
[edit]BigKrow (talk) 20:38, 2 August 2025 (UTC) @Dsuke1998AEOS
- Thanks, User:BigKrow! I've been far quieter here than I would want to, primarily because of RL responsibilities and the fact that my last two articles timed out before they could even be reviewed. I'm still in desperate need of writing something (not OR), but I'll continue monitoring reviewer activity to see if there is an appropriate timing. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 21:14, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Dsuke1998AEOS could I nominate you for reviewer ? Gryllida 22:04, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- I can help you a lot with it, e.g. we can screen share and you watch me doing a few reviews, then i watch over your shoulder, etc, as desired. I am offering help at initial stage. :) Gryllida 22:05, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the offer, User:Gryllida, but I think I'd better wait some months. So far I haven't conducted any pre-reviews, and even if you only look at my article track record, it's a rather mixed bag with a handful of published articles but many others that were deleted. This is not to say I wouldn't want to help out with the review queue, especially as it has been disrupted by all that "Close Wikinews" debacle.
- For now, I think I'll continue creating and improving more articles (I'm expected to be far more active this month than in July). Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:19, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply.
- 1. From improving articles, pre review (or review) is different in the sense that it is instructive and involves another user in revision and editing. Being able to improve a story is the same skill as reviewing as you are able to identify the issue that needs fixing.
- 2. I think it has been a pain point for a while as it is unclear whether the other user or users are going to do it or they are going to vanish for a few days. Do you possibly have suggestions how this could be improved?
- 3. And do you use discord or telegram or matrix?
- 4. Given your concern about activity. I think it is not an issue for reviewer role. Reviewing once every two weeks would be more than sifficient. Would you possibly like to commit to that?
- Thank you so much. Gryllida 22:38, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- Understood. 2. Unfortunately, I do not have straightforward answers, many of our 'true believers' (BigKrow, Lofi Gurl) are already as active as they can possibly be. 3. Yes, I have a Discord account. 4. I think I can commit to that goal, or something like 'creating one article/improving two existing articles per week'. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 17:39, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you. May i nominate you? We can do screen sharing via discord for first few reviews, you watching my reviews and i watching yours. I am "grylli" in discord. Audio is optional, we can do if you want or we can do chat - up to you (some users have privacy concerns about voice comms). Regards, Gryllida 19:31, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- As I said above, I'm taking some time to consider it. And I intend to create a new article in the next couple of day. Regardless, have sent you a request through Discord, to speed up communication during article reviews. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:29, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, you can ping me there please. I will try my best to respond. Gryllida 13:32, 15 August 2025 (UTC)

- P.S. previously we had reviewer burnout as they tried to review everything every day. This while seems good, is not required. You can choose, and i think it would work much better if you did, some routine, like "review 1 article each Sunday and 1 each Wednesday" or once a fortnight or whatever else suits. Gryllida 22:07, 6 August 2025 (UTC)

Live chat software trial
[edit]Live chat software trial (August-September 2025)
Hi, i am running a software to make live chat easier to use. It requires installation of QuasselDroid on Android, Quassel Client on Windows or Mac or Linux, and I don't know what on iOS (let me know if this is your main platform). The software would connect you to the official IRC channel for Wikinews and stay connected including all chat history, including when you closed the app. I am achieving this by hosting it on my Quassel Core on my server. If you are interested in trying this option, please install the Quassel Client software, and after this is done (not before), ensure you have a working email in your Special:Preferences so i can email you login credentials, and specify your desired IRC nickname. Thanks. Gryllida 22:01, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, please install the Quassel Client, it is free/open source, low bandwidth, low RAM and CPU usage
- and tell me your desired nickname
- I would greatly appreciated if you could use it for a few weeks and then leave me some feedback. This chat platform has 3 reviewers on it, and yourself being sitting in chat all 24/7 via this software could make collaboration much easier as then others could send messages to the group while your device is offline, and you could get notifications on mobile. Thanks Gryllida 20:07, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
Title
[edit]Hi! I'm new here, so I don't know that much about the project. But why did you remove the title and date in a reference? Affe2011 (talk) 10:57, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Affe2011: I guess you're referring to the RTÉ ref. Yeah, apologies, as my last edit overwrote yours (I started preparing it shortly before I went to sleep an then finished it afterwards). Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 14:44, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, i referred to the RTÉ one. Sorry for not being specific. No worries, I just wondered if it was a mistake or not.

About source helper
[edit]Hi, I have noticed that you have installed the source helper script. Thanks for that. I hope you will find it useful and beneficial. If you want, you can provide some feedback, like whether there are any errors or mistakes happening while using it. Thank you. -- Asked42 (talk) 16:43, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Asked42: I tried it on every source in my last article, and I found it to be a generally handy tool (though it was not able to fetch the author name from the DW article nor the date in the German-language press statement). I suppose I'm going to double-check the arguments anyway (for example, I'm used to separating the author names with commas rather than 'and', and – when possible – linking them to their respective Wikidata items when they do not have a Wikipedia article). Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 18:18, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your time. Regarding the issue of not being able to fetch some parameters, this is indeed a real problem, but it's not caused by the tool itself. The fetching relies on Citoid, which is a MediaWikis API also used in Wikipedia. Since Citoid is not perfect, it sometimes results in empty parameters.
- As for the author names, the script currently adds "and" before the last author. I assume you are suggesting that commas be used in all cases instead? If so, I'll take that into consideration for updates. Thank you. Asked42 (talk) 18:30, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
- Actually not, as the commas are mostly a stylistic preference of mine, I guess. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 18:53, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
Top article in August
[edit]
Thank you for contributing to the article titled "Several people hospitalized after thousands of hotdogs spill following collision on interstate in Pennsylvania." The article has the most number of page-views of all articles published in August of 2025.
That piece was the top dog of the day. Relish the glory! 🤣

Hello
[edit]Saw your story about Syrian leader.
Unfortunately I am away and cannot review until around mid November.
Please check Newsroom and live chat to help with editing other reports as this may help publish yours sooner.
Thanks Gryllida 07:11, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- And: Hello from me as well!--Bddpaux (talk) 23:38, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, User:Gryllida and User:Bddpaux!! After a very busy month doing redirect work on en.wp, I do intend to return to writing some articles, and (maybe!) perform a couple of pre-reviews. However, the draft page Wikinews:Pre-Reviewing in its current state doesn't helpfully explain whether pre-reviews should be conducted while an article is marked as "in development" or "waiting for review", nor does it outline the requirements for becoming a pre-reviewer.
