Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi

[edit]

Would you like to start a news article on a certain topic?

Thanks.

@Dsuke1998AEOS BigKrow (talk) 22:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Certainly, but first I'm going to familiarize myself with the policies and guidelines and the style guide. Thankfully there is far less such pages here than on English Wikipedia. :) Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:21, 26 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Enjoy your time here! @Dsuke1998AEOS BigKrow (talk) 22:23, 26 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi, would you like to be added to the 'users who can make article revisions by request' group? Then you'll get 'Minor revision requested' or 'Major revision requested' notifications in Echo (top right corner of the page) when someone requests an article edit. This contribution would help a lot to get the articles written and published faster. This is particularly fruitful to be involved into this if you're often logged into the wiki and reading the notifications on it, and have time to make the edits. If you agree, I will add you to the list at the {{pingrr}} page. What do you think? Gryllida (talk) 04:48, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Gryllida: Yes, I would like to be added to that template. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Done added. Thanks a lot. Let me know anytime if you have any questions about the revision requests or anything. Gryllida (talk) 19:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Gryllida (talk) 13:51, 9 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, I voted there. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 22:35, 9 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, how do you read me

[edit]

Hi, I included you at your request into the "pingrr" list recently. You'd've received a few dozens of "RR" echo notifications in the last two weeks. Did they arrive? Could you please tell me what is preventing you from responding to them?

Revision requests are an essential part of the collaboration process, and your participation is vitally important. Please provide me with the feedback, it would help me a lot with making this process more efficient and easier for you to use.

Thanks. Gryllida (talk) 05:22, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: Sorry for not being as active as I (or you) would like to be. I was concentrating on writing new stories, but given the recent declines of my articles it may be better for me to perform the requested edits instead. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:52, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Terrorism article.....

[edit]

I'd like to publish that, but: Can you take a good look at the first sentence. The 'Thursday' thing and then a totally separate day are confusing me. Otherwise: Looks pretty tight!--Bddpaux (talk) 16:09, 20 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Top article in April!

[edit]
Award for highest monthly page-views.
Contributing author for the top article published in April, 2025. The article has at least 1,754 views!

Thank you for contributing to the article titled "Streaming platform Twitch bans rapper Kanye West seven minutes into first stream for performing "Nazi salute"." The article has the most number of page-views of all articles published in April of 2025 and currently the most views of the year.

As one of our newest members, you have hit the ground running! I'm glad you've joined us and specifically with the aim of helping us improve the project. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:11, 20 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

This article is primarily the merit of Lofi Gurl – I merely expanded some bare citations! – , though it would be entertaining to see an article about a bunch of ant smugglers receiving a slap on the wrist getting more attention than the one about the pope's election. FYI

[edit]

Once a reviewer starts working on an article, it's usually theirs to review from that point on. No point in pinging other reviewers. (cc @Michael.C.Wright) I don't wanna touch it as I risk spending enormous amounts of time learning the event context and vocabulary, and may miss the previous reviewer's points nevertheless. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 09:57, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Apologies Gryllida, I should have known better. I was getting concerned that the article wouldn't published in time (I still do), and I pinged other active reviewers, but I also understand that reviewer time is limited. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:27, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I suggest writing an article about the election outcome.
Can you also invite someone from a sister wiki and ask to edit developing articles here? That task is in demand, and is more time consuming than reviewing. If they want, they can join the {{pingrr}} working group.
How is that working for you? Are you comfortable with helping with requested revisions?
Thanks. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 12:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
There is an article about a rally in the Newsroom. Perhaps it could be clarified. I waa mostly outdoors and could not edit it much on the weekend. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 12:38, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm currently working on the article about the Neighborhood Hills chase. After that, I will take a look at Union members rally for increase of worker compensation support in Sydney CBD. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 12:47, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Using template:w

[edit]

Just a quick heads-up, not a complaint. When using {{w}}, there's no need to number the parameters or include extra whitespace.

For example: {{w |1=Boniface Mwangi}} should be {{w|Boniface Mwangi}}

{{w |1=Tanzania |2=Tanzanian}} should be {{w|Tanzania|Tanzanian}}

I don't think we've ever run into this before, but the extra spaces or numbered parameters interfered with the script that generates lead summaries on the Main page.

Minor issues like this are usually caught during review or when the article is pushed to the Main page, but using {{w}} correctly helps streamline things.

Also, if the {{w}} link resolves to a local category, please change it to standard wikitext like [[Category:Some category]]. Not mandatory, reviewers often handle it, but doing so ahead of time reduces workload and speeds up review. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 22:45, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm following the discussion at WN:Water cooler/proposals#Proposed amendment to Wikinews:Style guide#Wikilinking an article, and I had decided that I wouldn't use numbered parameters any more (a stylistic choice that I had imported from my WP editing, but is clearly problematic here). And I'll also follow your suggestion to use normal wikilinks when it comes to local categories. Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 23:04, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
LOL, my bad. You even started the discussion. 🤦‍♂️ —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 00:01, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
