Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi, how do you read me

[edit]

Hi, I included you at your request into the "pingrr" list recently. You'd've received a few dozens of "RR" echo notifications in the last two weeks. Did they arrive? Could you please tell me what is preventing you from responding to them?.

Revision requests are an essential part of the collaboration process, and your participation is vitally important. Please provide me with the feedback, it would help me a lot with making this process more efficient and easier for you to use.

Thanks. Gryllida (talk) 05:19, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Live chat software trial

[edit]

Live chat software trial (August-September 2025)

Hi, i am running a software to make live chat easier to use. It requires installation of QuasselDroid on Android, Quassel Client on Windows or Mac or Linux, and I don't know what on iOS (let me know if this is your main platform). The software would connect you to the official IRC channel for Wikinews and stay connected including all chat history, including when you closed the app. I am achieving this by hosting it on my Quassel Core on my server. If you are interested in trying this option, please install the Quassel Client software, and after this is done (not before), ensure you have a working email in your Special:Preferences so i can email you login credentials, and specify your desired IRC nickname. Please note this is open source software with low bandwidth usage and the communication is only via text, so it is not privacy invasive. This platform is older than the web, irc existed since 1980s. Thanks. Gryllida 22:07, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please install the Quassel Client, it is free/open source, low bandwidth, low RAM and CPU usage
and tell me your desired nickname
I would greatly appreciated if you could use it for a few weeks and then leave me some feedback. This chat platform has 3 reviewers on it, and yourself being sitting in chat all 24/7 via this software could make collaboration much easier as then others could send messages to the group while your device is offline, and you could get notifications on mobile. Thanks Gryllida 20:09, 10 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

explicit images

[edit]

You should delete the explicit images nudes etc @Sheminghui.WU BigKrow (talk) 23:11, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Okay. But is this just a normal way of life for their people, and should we deliberately avoid it to comply with content policies? ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 04:11, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

User page?

[edit]

What does your user page mean? For example mate, mate, mate!? Thanks @Sheminghui.WU BigKrow (talk) 16:22, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Is this a violation of any policy? Mate is a synonym for colleague and also means friend. I just typed this user page during the public consultation randomly because I didn't want to display a red name or a blank user page with nothing in it after click that. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 02:03, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@BigKrow Also, do we need to add @ when leaving a message on a discussion page? Sheminghui.WU (talk) 02:04, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Just curious, nothing more......

How did you come to know of Viktor? He posts some fantastic photos!--Bddpaux (talk) 19:01, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

We met on Wikimedia, I also like his travel photos. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 21:56, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Did you interview him?--Bddpaux (talk) 15:42, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
And (I'm not being snarky here) -- that article (as it sits) absolutely has a time limit. The focal event is 'National Tourism Day'. Our articles focus on discrete news events -- quite rarely does "I had a cool talk with a cool guy" quality as a discrete news event (not saying that it couldn't -- but rarely). And (not being mean) -- go to the history page of that article. I think you do a great job of contradicting yourself. Give it a read -- I think you'll laugh. Now, Viktor cranks out so much STUFF, that fragments (at a minimum) of his work can be used A LOT AROUND THIS PLACE. Let me know your thoughts.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:12, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Timeliness was just an introduction — it’s better to have it, but it doesn’t really matter if it’s not there. What matters is the content of the article itself. Do you really think this piece has no value or meaning for readers? Gryllida read it and thought it was quite good.
A few days ago, you also submitted an interview with a magician — did that article mention “National Magic Week” even once? Not at all. But the part about making illusion props was interesting.
The article’s history page? If you’re referring to the edit summary, that’s because I used machine translation. If you’ve ever used Google Translate, you’ll know that the term “timeliness” is often mistranslated, and I later corrected it. I honestly don’t understand what exactly you meant by saying you were “not being snarky.”
Of course I interviewed him — the record was sent to the Scoop mailbox long ago, and it has been verified. What did you think? Do you constantly fire off questions when just chatting with someone?
And yes, he is an active and loyal Wikinews contributor. Every article he’s published here has gone through community review. What’s the issue? Just because someone takes part in the altruistic Wikimedia movement, they deserve to be treated differently?
As for this article, both MichaelCWright and I — and at least Gryllida and BigKrow — have already reached consensus. and Over the past 30 days, the article has received 11,000 views on Chinese Wikinews.
When publishing, we could remove the phrase "World Tourism Day," or I could ask him a few questions about the upcoming "Russian National Unity Day" and see if he'll answer. After all, he is a resident of the disputed Crimean region.(That will be much time sensitive than just have a National magic week in introduction.)

(offtopic) By the way, have you voted on w:m:Requests for comment/Sister Projects next steps? You might consider expressing your opinion there. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 04:04, 1 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
"Timeliness was just an introduction — it’s better to have it, but it doesn’t really matter if it’s not there. What matters is the content of the article itself." - that is not for you to decide -- that is for a Reviewer to decide. You're pretty new here, so please remember: Freshness and Newsworthiness matter a great deal at this project. I am going to be taking action on the article pretty soon. You may be able to gatwick it. We might have about 7 layers of "lost in translation" going on here. But, the magician article: The interview WAS THE FOCAL EVENT. It is "newsworthy" because of National Magic week. Your article's situation is nearly the perfect antithesis of that (but, admittedly, not entirely).--Bddpaux (talk) 13:13, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
An interview itself can be a news event, regardless of the timeliness of the holiday. In fact, the main news value lies in the content of the interview rather than the holiday (unless the interview itself revolves around the holiday). ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 13:28, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
"that is not for you to decide -- that is for a Reviewer to decide", So what are you refuting here? When did I deny the reviewer's right? On the contrary, I emphasized our communication and consensus. Or is it that the community member cannot discuss? If this is just a suggestion... then I suggest you write more articles instead of wrangling; you've been pretty inactive lately, please remember what we need is content and new contributors. Or go to WM and defend your website, will also be good. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 13:38, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I just wanted to say it's a pleasure interacting with you. We agree on some things but not everything, which is how I think we will eventually be able to arrive at a very useful consensus, and I hope we can somehow make en.wikinews function again before it's too late. Also I enjoy seeing your translations on zh.wikinews! Tduk (talk) 02:32, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! "The virtuous person is harmonious but not conforming"(君子和而不同), this is definitely best for our Wiki. Looking forward to more exchanges and collaborations through work! ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 07:09, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think we do need to make some big changes soon; wikinews is on the chopping block, are you aware? Also, I'm not sure if you missed Warrington Hudlin honored at 2025 Queens World Film Festival or just weren't interested but just in case, wanted to give you a heads up! Tduk (talk) 15:13, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've added a few paragraphs and more photos at 2025 Queens World Film Festival features filmmakers breakfast and ceremony honoring Warrington Hudlin. I'm not sure, it may make sense for you to just take the new stuff and make a new article? They were very excited to see your zh.wn article; one filmmaker even arrived from China. Tduk (talk) 22:39, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm very happy to hear this! I'll see if the content can stand alone as an article; if not, I'll add it to an older post. Version iterations are common on Chinese Wikinews. Thank you for letting me know! @Tduk Sheminghui.WU (talk) 09:15, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please give my regards to that Chinese filmmaker! I hope to see his work win more award! I think Chinese films have great potential, and I hope that international exchanges will become more frequent! ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 10:26, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

If you see Mr. Tong Xie again(just in case), may you ask him some questions? For example, "How to tell the authentic stories of Chinese people in the West?", "What role do you think can independent films play among overseas Chinese?", and "How did you build a Chinese-language art space?" @Tduk ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:46, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

World Tourism Day article

[edit]

The article on World Tourism Day has failed publication, due to staleness. With the right amount of work, it can maybe be gatwick'd and re-focused. I hope (in some way) we can use some or all of his photos. --Bddpaux (talk) 16:48, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

You do realize that you are making the contributors do more work because the reviewers are refusing to do the work they signed up to do. This being original reporting/interview, I also believe you are misinterpreting policy. Tduk (talk) 17:10, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
The language in this text is much better now, thank you for returning to normal. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 22:20, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@TdukYou are mistaken. At best, you misunderstand freshness in relation to OR. I am a Reviewer. I am not refusing any such thing. And: based on what premise would you know what Reviewers signed up to do? Stop the argumentative stuff and contribute. I will try to engage more with reviewing. We are ALL volunteers here. All of us.—-Bddpaux (talk) 17:22, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, we are all volunteers here. Most articles were submitted for review and not looked at, allowed to go stale, and deleted. How would you describe that? It's a big problem, for many reasons, and I think focusing on my use of 'refusing to' rather than whatever you'd prefer to be there, maybe "unable to", is misdirection. There is now absolutely no motivation for anyone to contribute new material, and morale is incredibly low here. Please, also, it's not a good look to order people around. Maybe you should read the discussion at Wikinews talk:Newsworthiness. Tduk (talk) 17:26, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Tduk Please view your talk page. I make this unmitigated promise: For the remainder of this year ‘’I will carefully and seriously’’ prioritize reviewing actions. My job can be time consuming. But I will focus some energy here. You have my word. Thank you for your contributions to this project. Here is hoping for good things ahead!—-Bddpaux (talk) 17:47, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I already responded to that, didn't I? Regardless, I think marking this particular story stale is not quite aligned with policy as stated. Tduk (talk) 17:56, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I keep meaning to say this, but I am busy. The Viktor article could SUPER EASILY be gatwicked (or I am pretty sure it could be, at least). National Tourism day is severely stale, but maybe the 'interview' could be woven into a fresher endeavor? Maybe.....? Maybe "World photography day" (I made that up!!)--Bddpaux (talk) 16:39, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, we can. That would be great, and I'd try to do that. However, you need to understand that it's not mandatory. There's no outdated consensus yet (in fact, I haven't met another person who thinks so, Gryllida, MichaelCWright, BigKrow, Tduk...), even without modification. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 22:50, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Let me again be crystal clear here. You (once again) throw the word 'consensus' around like so much pocket lint. That word is a VERY SERIOUS THING HERE. I hope you can understand that. A credentialled reviewer here (me) has reviewed that article and has determined it to be stale. The FOCAL event is terribly stale (World Tourism Day). The interview and photos are interesting. An interview (unto itself) is under only the MOST RARE circumstances a stand-alone Newsworthy event. If you sat next to Tom Cruise on a plane and interviewed him about his life and career -- maybe, possibly, just maybe. LOADS of people take trips. LOADS of people take photos. For all of your keystrokes, I'd bet that article (as it sits!) could be gatwicked in less than, say, 100 words (if that many). This "outdated consensus" of which you speak is not a tangible thing here. This is exhausting. I'm not going to quite characterize your recent behavior as 'disruptive', but it is teetering REMARKABLY close to obstinate, to use a polite word. I'd love to pass that article, that currently sits at about 83% fantastic. It is stale. Full stop. If it is freshened up (just a little) -- it can very probably go somewhere.--Bddpaux (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux Your opinion alone doesn't change anything, even if you're a reviewer, because there are other reviewers who don't think this article is outdated (like Gryllida). If you continue to label me like this, I can only say that you're making personal attacks, infringing on freedom of speech, and obstructing publication and discussion etc many labels can put here like you did. I can try to improve this, but stating facts is my normal behavior and, naturally, my right. StOp MaKiNg BaSeLeSs AtTaCkS oN mY dIsCuSsIoN pAgE.Thanks. ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:29, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
If nothing changes on that article, I will take action on it very soon. I am not attacking you. I am stating facts in accordance with our policies and work flow. I will address your conduct and actions on this project any time such actions or conduct warrant it. My opinion changes MANY things -- namely, your self-aggrandizing way of processing policy at this wiki. This is English WN. We have standards and they will be upheld. Your "speech" can be and is profoundly mis-guided here. I "obstruct" publication of articles all the time. I am credentialled here to do that very thing. I am thrilled to push ANY good article out for publication. You have barely a few molecules of "consensus" at this point. I invite you to fix your article and I will be happy to look at it.--Bddpaux (talk) 23:36, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please disprove the consensus reached by myself, MichaelCWright, Gryllida, BigKrow, and Tduk, instead of repeatedly repeating your "yarn ball". LOADS OF CUTE CATS! Happy ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:38, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I can make changes, but please stop attacking and do something beneficial for Wikinews and its readers. Please ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:40, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Who exactly is being obstinate here. It turns out that is not the one who bringing up "official position" and seniority to prevent others from speaking😂. Don't you laugh when you look at? ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:36, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am not (in the remotest way) trying to quell you speaking or discussing anything that benefits this project -- you can do MUCH of that. I am not 'puffing' my position here. You (appear to) line up this magical "consensus" which you wave around with a sense of glee, when you hardly have a fragment of it. That article is stale. Policy will be applied to it. Full stop. I can assure you: with my efforts to run a good news site, I'm laughing about nothing here. You have work to do on an article that could be salvaged in (literally) a matter of minues.--Bddpaux (talk) 23:39, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Gryllida suggested I release it in mid-November. Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:42, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I can assure you: with my efforts to run a good news site, I'm laughing about nothing here. Sheminghui.WU (talk) 23:42, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Let's refer to Wikipedia for the following information:Do not make personal attacks anywhere on Wikipedia. Comment on content, not on the contributor. Personal attacks harm the Wikipedia community and the collaborative atmosphere needed to create a good encyclopedia. Derogatory comments about other editors may be removed by any editor. For the nth time, allow me to remind you -- this is English WN. I have made NO personal attacks on you -- none. You might process my words as "egregious" -- they are not. My style can be hair terse -- this is a news site -- we can lean a bit toward terse at times. Really, I have written an ABSURD number of words to merely (for the most part): Try to get you to gatwick an article, to understand our definition of consensus and to understand that an interview bestows no magic on an article merely on its face in terms of freshness. That is 99% of the matter at play here.--Bddpaux (talk) 00:25, 4 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I've started on (and mostly finished) Robert Dick and Mark Dresser reunite at the Fridman Gallery. Do you think it could use more photos? Tduk (talk) 00:34, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Nice. If you have, why not ~ Sheminghui.WU (talk) 00:43, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I may not have that many different photos from the event, unfortunately. If I make changes to the article it will only be on the techniques Dresser employed; I need to research that a bit. If you were interested in translating it it's pretty much ready. Tduk (talk) 04:27, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I added a few photos to illustrate the instruments and techniques. If you're interested in translating, it's ready. I'm not sure I have the energy to submit it for review on this site. Tduk (talk) 15:52, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
