The Arbitration Committee is a proposed community-elected group of users who can hold hearings in serious disputes that cannot otherwise be resolved by the community (through editing, discussions or quick, generally temporary actions by administrators).

In general, ArbCom hearings are intended to be about whether core policies like NPOV and Wikiquette are followed. The members of ArbCom can decide whether or not they want to hear a particular case brought before them through Wikinews:Requests for arbitration. Be aware that arbitration duty can still be rather time-intensive in complex cases, and that you will be required to recuse yourself from cases you are involved in.

The Arbitration Committee elections will be held from January 18, 2006, 20:00 UTC to January 31, 2006, 20:00 UTC. The current date and time is: 03:59 22 November.

The elections are open, and we strive for consensus. Members are elected for a term of one year. Please limit comments to an absolute minimum, to avoid division. Long comments will be removed. Anyone can be nominated. The candidates with the most support will be appointed to the 5 open seats on the committee.

In order to vote, you need to have been an active user on Wikinews for more than a month, and you must have at least 200 edits.

Nominations

I would like to nominate Craig Spurrier. He is a very diligent and calm user who maintains a cool head in disputes. I believe he will be able to examine matters brought before the ArbCom carefully and diligently. My only worry is that it takes away time from the print edition he maintains so carefully. ;-) --Eloquence 04:08, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I accept the nomination. I hope Arbitration Committee will have so little to do that it does not have any effect on the time I spend on the print edition :). Even if it does, I can always make a little bit more time for Wikinews :). --Cspurrier 14:15, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ilya is my second nomination. He has already proven himself in mediation, but he is the kind of user who would do an excellent job in arbitration as well, especially when he doesn't have to do all the work and is assisted by the other members of the committee.--Eloquence 04:08, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I accept, thank you for the nomination. I hope that the ArbCom will be a relatively low-volume affair however, and our services would not be needed very often. -- IlyaHaykinson 17:37, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Natterer is very active behind the scenes on Wikinews and follows most Wikimedia projects. Natterer is a reasonable and thoughtful wikimedian, and will surely interpret Wikinews policies fairly and accurately. Natterer will surely be no respecter of person or position as he natters to Administrators and Editors. I would like to nominate xem for the Arbitration Committee. --Chiacomo (talk) 04:36, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Sorry for my ignorance, but what is his involvement? Sysadmin? I can't find him on meta either. Nyarlathotep 15:38, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He is very active on the Wikimedia IRC channels, and though while very informed about the events on the the wiki, he has made very few edits anywhere --Cspurrier 15:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also a little bit skeptical - can we have some more details on his activities "behind the scenes on Wikinews"? - Borofkin 23:28, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

guys, apparently this is an "inside joke" for those who spend lots of time on IRC; i.e. it's not a serious nomination. Neutralizer 05:26, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And here I was about to start theorising on the existence of a Wikinews cabal. :-) - Borofkin 05:43, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry; after months of analysis, I can confirm there is no cabal.:-)Neutralizer 13:25, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There Is No CabalThis message brought to you by the Wikinews Cabal. The Wikinews cabal would also at this time, like to remind you of its lack of existence, and that the text-decoration: blink; only makes it partially evil.

Edbrown05 is the only person who has more main namespace edits than I, and has been shirking his administrator duties by refusing to accept nomination, but he has accepted *this* nomination!
