The Wikinews Group

Hi. After consulting with a number of community members, we have started the first step in creating a potential Wikimedia Affiliate group. The details can be found at The Wikinewsie Group. The purpose of the group is:

  1. support open license, independent journalistic efforts that provide neutral and verifiable reporting of news stories,
  2. support the education of future journalists in trying to insure they maintain historical journalistic ideals regarding reporting standards,
  3. support efforts to increase journalist freedom to report around the globe,
  4. encourage participation of and facilitate non-professional journalists practicing their craft on Wikinews, and
  5. support the mission statement and vision of the Wikimedia Foundation.

This aims to compliment and support existing efforts, and there is zero intention of imposing one language's policies on another language. The project should assist in increasing original reporting, improving original reporting according to local project standards, better supporting our small community and increasing participation.

Please sign up here by listing your name to indicate you support our group. Thanks. --LauraHale (talk) 09:26, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinewsies to Iceland?

Does anyone have some extra money that they can afford to go to Iceland and assist in running say a half day Wikinews writing workshop? This might increase Icelandic participation on English Wikinews, and might be a good kick start to getting an Icelandic Wikinews on Incubator. (It would also be very useful for The Wikinewsie Group.)--LauraHale (talk) 22:22, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews in GLAM newsletter

I thought people might enjoy reading outreach:GLAM/Newsletter/March 2013/Contents/Spain report, which mentions our efforts in Spain on the Paralympic skiing front. It apparently got a very nice reception on Twitter from some French GLAM folks. :) --LauraHale (talk) 03:48, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikinewsie Group bylaws draft

A copy of the draft bylaws for the The Wikinewsie Group have been posted at The Wikinewsie Group/Bylaws. Alongside these, a Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Journalists have also been posted, which detail our understanding of concepts found in the draft bylaws. Feedback would be appreciated on these. If you agree with them and have no suggestions for modification on one or both documents, please comment on Bylaws talk page or meta:Talk:The Wikinewsie Group/Declaration talk page to say so. Conversely, if you are interested in joining The Wikinewsie Group, please feel free to comment on the relevant talk page with feedback on what changes you might like to see. Thank you. --LauraHale (talk) 04:23, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Conferences of possible interest

This conference is looking for potential speakers. It might be a great opportunity for some one to show off what we are doing on Wikinews. :) --LauraHale (talk) 10:05, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

Thanks, Billinghurst (thanks to all the translators!) 04:32, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Distributed via Global message delivery (Wrong page? You can fix it.)
I'm sorry for not having delivered this automatically, but you've blocked m:User:EdwardsBot here so it's not my fault. PiRSquared17 (talk) 12:14, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody blames you. :-)  The community here initiated formal proceedings to unblock EdwardsBot, and the bot operator trolled the proceedings. --Pi zero (talk) 12:59, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania panel on photo coverage support

Hi Wikinews folks,

I am in the process of submitting a Wikimania panel on facilitating the photographic coverage of public events (such as concerts, political rallies, etc.)

It is my understanding that Wikinews has a record of such a support through your accreditation program. Would there be someone familiar with this program, attending Wikimania and willing to participate in this panel? I believe your perspective and input would be useful.

Thanks, Jean-Frédéric (talk) 13:27, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I probably have the most experience with this. I am going to Wikimania, and would be happy to assist in any way you need. Just let me know. --LauraHale (talk) 13:39, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. I’ll follow up on this by email (I already have your address somewhere). Thanks for your interest and participation Laura. Jean-Frédéric (talk) 17:59, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. The need to streamline and make this process easier is actually one of the reasons we are trying to gain thematic org recongition at meta:The Wikinewsie Group. --LauraHale (talk) 22:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, here is the abstract. Talk to you soon! Jean-Frédéric (talk) 23:06, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
