Since our last edition, Adambro and Ironiridis have been given the mop and bucket. Welcome to our new janitors!
No consensus was found for the accreditation of Fabienkhan. TheFearow withdrew his request. Meekel is a current candidate.

Featured Articles and News In Pictures

No articles were promoted recently. Eight candidates are waiting for your vote, including a self-nomination by Celticfan383 which could become our first featured sports article.
Several images were featured on the main pages, which you can check out in the News In Picture archive.
The image below, by Guillaume Paumier, received the Silver Wikimania Award in the category News.

Original reporting

Since our last edition, 18 articles have claimed original reporting. Some highlights:

Rico Shen was very active, reporting from both the World Deaf Swimming Championships in Taipei and the Taiwanese Gaming Championships.
Steven Fruitsmaak (that's me) managed to get an exclusive interview with World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau.
Gabriel Pollard interviewed three politicians from New Zealand on the subject of the latest digital television service, Freeview.
Nathan Carter wrote about the August 28 lunar eclipse.
Richard Stallman was confirmed safe while visiting Peru during an earthquake.
Gary Kirk wrote Nelson Mandela statue unveiled in Parliament Square, UK.
Wisekwai discovered that he could access YouTube in Thailand again.
Clare White wrote a brief on a global youth conference on genocide, taking place in Kigali.
There was a report on the Off Festival in Poland.

Several others wrote stories based on television sources. The Wikinews Reports blog activity was mostly related to some of these stories. You can ask any of the blog authors if you want to help out on the blog.

Summer's over, and contributions seem to have increased a bit lately. Site activity

Wikinews is approaching 10'000 articles. Spread the word!
A Wikinews:World News Quiz has been set up after the Quiz extension was added to our MediaWiki repertoire. Users who take the quiz are invited to post their scores on the talk page.
Substantial changes have been made to the main page recently. TheFearow has implemented a dynamic news ticker - see Wikinews:Ticker for information and the template at Template:Ticker. Currently only available for almost every browser that isn't IE. IlyaHaykinson added the Template:Lead article with large image to the main page, which is currently the subject of a poll. A complete main page redesign is also being discussed.
User:Cspurrier has kicked off an ongoing mailing list discussion on the topic of setting up some kind of official organisation to issue press cards and support our off-site activities, like a Wikinews Chapter.

IRC activity

Some of the IRC topics include slow server activity, tinyurl's, the nearing of the 10'000th article on Wikinews, ... (add more here if you know more...)

Wikimedia News

Bids for Wikimania 2008 have begun.
Wikimedia Commons has accepted the Creative Commons 3.0 license.
The English Wikipedia now has more than 10'000'000 pages, all namespaces combined.

The Wikinews Bulletin is a free internal newsletter for members of the Wikinews community. The newsletter is "staffed" by several editors, who produce the (more or less) fortnightly publication. Don't hesitate to join our team, or leave us a tip. The publication has produced seven issues.
