Quick question[edit]

How should we count the number of characters in an article for point scoring? Just the size of the prose, or everything, including the wikimarkup? I'm of the opinion we should do the latter, but this is something we didn't consider beforehand and probably should be discussed now. Tempodivalse [talk] 13:32, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I personally vote normalized. (Normalized includes normalized version of some wiki markup too). Bawolff 13:33, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, after second thought perhaps normalised is better. Still a bit complicated but it's better than i initially thought, considering it does sort-of include wikimarkup as well. Tempodivalse [talk] 13:51, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By includes some, I should mention its very minimal in what it includes. For example, Bomb explosions kill eleven in Central Baghdad (specificly this revision) gets normalized as:

Three successive bomb blasts in Baghdad, capital of Iraq killed at least 11 people, according to Iraqi police. The incident occurred just before the country's election, scheduled for March 7. "There were three explosions, one near the Sheraton hotel the other near the Babylon hotel. The third we are checking into," stated Baghdad security spokesman Major General Qassim al-Moussawi. Police sources claimed that at least 21 people had been injured. The three explosions occurred in rapid succession and sent smoke clouds in the sky. The first bomb exploded at 3.40 pm. Subsequently, fire engines arrived at the hotels and the police and soldiers together barred entry. According to police, the third bomb exploded near al-Nahrain University in central Baghdad, though they provided no details. Multiple bombings have killed several people in Iraq, in the past few months. Iraqi authorities fear that such attacks may have been carried out to disrupt the forthcoming the general elections of Iraq. Note that most templates that just add stuff (like infobox) that have no user content is stripped. Categories are normalized from [[category:Foo]] to Foo. Source templates are normalized from *{{source|url=http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/war/3-Bombs-Rock-Baghdad-11-Dead-82588497.html|title=3 Bombs Rock Baghdad, 11 Dead|author=|publisher=VOA|date=25 January, 2010}} to * 25 January, 2010 VOA 3 Bombs Rock Baghdad, 11 Dead . Repeated whitespace is removed. Bawolff 14:38, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Scoring[edit]

As I wrote it, I intended for the scoring system to be based on rendered text - not on complete markup.

Complete markup also includes infoboxes, image names, the categories needed for the competition. Using rendered does not penalise anyone for minimal use of wikilinks. Using markup encourages over-wikification. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:41, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, after some thought I decided that it's better to use rendered, normalised text as well. I guess i wasn't as happy about it because i received fewer points that way. :-b Tempodivalse [talk] 14:59, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, because you really need more points! :-P Anyway I agree with using the normalized count, and that gadget is very useful. the wub "?!" 00:44, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Sorry if I'm being really dense here, but how exactly do you submit an article to the standings (already published etc)? Belovedfreak (talk) 10:00, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • If it's put through the normal review process it'll automatically be added when the reviewer runs the scripts. If it has been reviewed in an odd way (I did one or two with IE6 last week where the scripts don't work) just list it here - ideally a link to the version that was reviewed and is thus eligible to get the points. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:57, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it's Kidnapped Spanish aid worker is released from 13 March.--Belovedfreak (talk) 16:40, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
