From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
[edit] Hey
Hey Nathan, just wanted to let you know that I think your writing has improved a lot since I was last here. By the way, I think you should consider archiving your page as it takes a while to load on dial-up. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 12:42, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I sent you an email; let me know if it doesn't show up. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:18, 8 August 2006 (UTC) P.S. Thanks for archiving!

[edit] images in Bali Nine article
i'm not sure the use of the screenshots will be covered under fair use. i think screenshots are fair use only if the the images illustrates the screen shot - i.e. a one can use a Baywatch screenshot in an article on Baywatch. but one cant use a Baywatch screenshot of Pam Anderson to illustrate an article on Pam, unrelated to her baywatch appearence. Doldrums 08:05, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Images from competing news sources do not qualify as fair use. —
this is messedrocker(talk)21:57, 8 September 2006 (UTC)- i think we can use a screen capture of a TV news report only if the subject of our article is the tv program itself. the use of images of someone or something featured on the program might be acceptable if there is no other way to obtain an image of the someone/something (eg. we might, i think, use a screen capture of an al-qaeda video shown exclusively on one tv channel). for the Bali Nine case, i think there must be other photographs available (from families or photo agencies), so i think we won't be able to justify fair usage - we will simply be using commercially, material from a competitor, just becoz we are not willing to spend money or effort to buy or take a photo ourselves. incidentally, am not particularly well-versed with copyright stuff, so u might want to confirm this with someone better informed. [edit] Question...
If I submit an article that I wrote myself, but has been put out elsewhere does that constitute copyright?
Let me know... I'll do a rewrite.
Thanks.
Amanda
- Not if you have personally written it, however it depends on the site you submitted it to. If it's on CNN or the AP, yes, you need to rewrite it. By the way, Welcome to Wikinews! Thunderhead(talk)(Check out my RFA test) 02:59, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Cartman!
You are a gem. Thank you for your offer to help. The articles have not been published in any of the big agencies, simply press releases sent out on the MuttShack Website. I am the Founder of MuttShack, so that all copyright issues can be resolved by my boss... i.e. ME! Please let me know what needs to be in place. I would be much obliged if you can let me know what I have to do to comply with those.
Awesome job... editing for WikiNews!

HO HO HO! These people got no presents from me this year.
|
FellowWikiNews is whishing thou a Merry realised they had and therefore DEMANDS you have yourself a Merry Christmas... NOW! Failure to comply will result in going to jail with Santa. (Note: Santa is Satan spelt backwards)! Christmas Story (Children Friendly): So kids, is Santa Democrat or Republican??! Often depicted as an obese man wearing a tasteless red, ermine trimmed suit, Santa Claus is a self-employed Caucasian male who's been married to the same woman for several centuries. It appears likely that he is a churchgoer, insofar as he is a Catholic saint and a former bishop. It has to be assumed here that Claus was released from his vows, or else he would not have been married. Frequent arguments have erupted over the political affiliation of Claus. Ten years ago, Dick Cheney inadvertently dealt a savage blow to the morale of the Republican Party when he misidentified the political affiliation of Santa Claus in his best-selling book, Parliament of Whores. "Santa Claus," he said, "is a Democrat." However it is perfectly obvious from his demographic profile alone that Santa is in fact a Republican. This assessment is often rebutted by Democrats with Anne-McCaffery counter-analysis: Santa Claus has no children. High-achieving professionals without children trend Democratic. While the Clausian canon does not specifically address the issue of Santa's children, numerous extra-canonical sources suggest that Claus did, in fact, reproduce. Numerous Christmas TV movie specials alone support this point. Santa is renowned for an aggressive adherence to a binary naughty/nice list, which suggests an impatience for nuanced moral positions that betrays his Republican preferences. Santa's mere willingness to define individuals along a naughty/nice axis demonstrates his indifference to the philosophical stance of, say, The New York Times. And note that no canonical or extra-canonical Clausian text indicates that Santa ever attended college or, God forbid, graduate school. THE END!!! FellowWikiNews approves of this story. |

you have locked the page - is it possible to add a relevant link?
http://www.uk-ufo.org/condign is the site set up by the individuals (including myself) who worked to get the documents released.

[edit] New policy has users up in smoke
Hello. I am not sure if you check this page anymore, but I thought you might be interested as to what is going on here at Wikinews: Wikinews:Image use policy/New wikimedia policy action plan. I am outraged as well as others...do you have an opinion? DragonFire1024 09:45, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- No problem :) We miss you though :) DragonFire1024 21:25, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well you would have to look on the big discussion page...I am not sure...I do know that Wikinews was NOT initially consulted by the Board before a decision was made or to get our opinion DragonFire1024 07:44, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- there's also an FAQ created because there appears to be a fair amount of misconceptions about this. –Doldrums(talk) 07:51, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well yes, but alos it seems that both Doldrums and Eloquence have stated, that despite the EDP and the fact its there for "non-free images" they said the small amount of images, which were at one point ALL but I compromised and relicensed most of them, my images are not allowed under an EDP despite being used in several OR articles and especially articles not reported among the local press here in Bflo...Why have an EDP then? DragonFire1024 07:54, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes but then why have one at all? Point is...without it if WN has no use of ANY non-free images whatsoever, then there will be a whole lot of nothing image wise coming on here any more...for one that would in clude many many publicity photos. DragonFire1024 08:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thats what i have been trying to say...but Eloquence, and the board seem to not care what we think. Every time I try to get a rational answer...I get sideswiped and no one tells me why my images are not allowed under the EDP. DragonFire1024 08:13, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also see: User:DragonFire1024/DRAFT: Open-letter to foundation-1 mailing list on why this image policy Will Hurt Wikinews. Feel free to add or remove whatever...edit it or whatever to make it better. DragonFire1024 08:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

RE: I agree...here is a list of my images that I want to request an EDP (this is a small list as there were nearly 75 images I took with my camera that neded to be relicensed. I relicensed more than half to compromise.) User:DragonFire1024/Images to request for EDP. DragonFire1024 08:21, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes but regardles of the meanign of free, for a news agency, not matter how hard they try, no news site will ever be able to host all 100% free images. Its just not possible. Not every image can be free. DragonFire1024 08:34, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
it discourages the use of non-essential, "decorative", free images and has given us the opportunity to draw the boundaries. if there is a good rationale for a non-free image to be used, we can use it. –Doldrums(talk) 08:18, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- that's right. it asks for "minimal" use. this to ensure that "image is essential, no free alternative" is not used as a free-pass. note that if we strictly publish free material, it enables other people (including those who don't mind adding on decorative non-free media) to republish our work. if our material is not licensed cleanly (a mix of free and non-free, so it is difficult for republishers to sieve free stuff from non-free stuff) we will be failing in one of our key missions - to serve as a "free-content newswire". the policy –Doldrums(talk) 08:50, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Very nice! Just one thought: it may be best to clarify that this is happening in Australia, somewhere in the title. The "Indian" bit (being the only geographical reference) could be confusing. Hi. Thanks for contributing to the archiving process. It is a tedious process, which is why we often fall behind. But may I ask that you review WN:ARCHIVE before you do any more archiving? It is important that we do it right, otherwise we might as well have a bot do it. Cheers and thanks. --SVTCobra 01:32, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Cobra, is there anything in particular that I am doing incorrectly - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 01:43, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- In my intrepretation, the process is a thorough review, wikilinks should checked and fixed if necessary (including how the publishers are linked in the sources section and local links should be used when possible instead of WP links), redundant links should be removed, sources should be sorted, spelling errors should be fixed, date format and layout conventions should be enforced (i.e. where tags, sections, and cats belong). I think if you review the changes I made following your archiving, you can see what I felt should have been done. --SVTCobra 02:10, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright
Please do not copy&paste things directly from sources. In your recent article there were several instances of either copy/paste or near-copy/paste. Please be careful not to violate the copyright of others. Gopher65talk 17:46, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Here you go:
- From article, before I changed it: "OECD figures released overnight predicted Australia would avoid a recession, with the economy predicted to grow by 1.7 per cent."
- From source: OECD figures released overnight predicted Australia would avoid a recession, with the economy predicted to grow by 1.7 per cent.
- From article: It would be first time the federal budget has gone into deficit since 2001.
- From source: It would be first time the federal budget has gone into deficit since 2001.
- Here's one where the wording isn't identical, but is too close for comfort:
- From article: Mr Turnbull said the government focused on inflation for too long earlier in the year.
- From source: Labor had mismanaged the financial crisis by focusing on inflation for far too long earlier this year, he said.
- Also, while copying direct quotes is fine, remember that many other sites use a different quotation mark than we do. We use the straight ones (") while many other sites use angled variations (“”). So when you copy/paste direct quotes, make sure to replace their funny looking quotes, if they use them:). Gopher65talk 21:50, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- And I totally understand that OR bit:(. I live in the middle of western Central-Canada (Saskatchewan, if you know where that is (no one does:P)), and nothing ever happens here. Not only that, but apparently some prolific Wikipedian lives around here, and s/he has taken a million pictures of the entire area:(. Bah, humbug! Nothing for me to do, barring a plane crash or something unfortunate like that. Gopher65talk 21:59, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
