Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Bot?[edit]

Hello. Is this a bot account? If so, why is not listed at WN:Bots or Meta-wiki? If it is not a bot account, why are you making such edits? --Green Giant (talk) 21:08, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Green. I saw that it was less than 20 edits, so I allowed myself to run the bot even without a bot flag. Neriah (talk) 14:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm… I’m not aware of any bot policy locally or globally that says you can make bot edits if it is less than 20 edits. You should not be "allowing" yourself to do so. All bot accounts must be authorised either here or on Meta-Wiki. Please refrain from doing this again unless you have an authorised account, because we can block such accounts on sight. I did not want to block your account until we had some explanation. It is not a satisfactory explanation but I will let it go this once. --Green Giant (talk) 18:21, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Though, you can always request bot access here; and if you can also share the source code, that would be great!

If you want, I can run the bot regularly, but for that I of course have to ask for a bot permission. On which page if I want I can ask? Neriah (talk) 19:43, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can request bot permission at WN:Bots. --Green Giant (talk) 21:17, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re: bot request[edit]

Hi, I've left you a new message at Wikinews:Bots/Requests/Neriah, please check. Gryllida (talk) 21:09, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gryllida I answered there. Neriah (talk) 21:06, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Bot flag added to the bot's account now. Gryllida (talk) 22:55, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gryllida Hello. There are many Double Redirects that are protected from evaluation at the sysop level only. what can we do? Neriah (talk) 09:57, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
En.wn has given bots sysop rights before, but none have it currently. I think it's done at the regular RfP - see here, for example. Heavy Water (talk) 15:05, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gryllida, @Heavy Water It is not possible to give permission for 10 minutes for the bot to run? Neriah (talk) 17:27, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrats-here, at least-do not give out sysop flags without community consensus, to bots or humans. It should go through RfP. Heavy Water (talk) 17:42, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any point in opening a vote or is it unnecessary (that the sysops will do it themselves)? Neriah (talk) 18:20, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How many of these are fully-protected? If it's, say, 50 or less, {{editprotected}} might be the way to go to save the time of an RfP. Heavy Water (talk) 18:26, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Heavy Water I've added requests in all of them. From which sysop can I request to treat it? Neriah (talk) 19:57, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They now display in {{votings}} at the top of Recent changes and other places, so one or another one of them will get around to it. Heavy Water (talk) 19:59, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Heavy Water and Neriah, thank you - I just did one in Category:Protected edit requests, I will continue to fix them. It may take me a few weeks as I rarely have a time slot of around an hour of undisturbed time; I get distracted by my environment a lot, so I will do them one at a time when able to. Please check when you receive reply at talk page, and if the redirect has been fixed correctly, then take the request off. It is also okay to utilize the bot to leave such requests at talk pages, when the bot lacks access to edit the page directly. (Not that I know why these pages are protected -- perhaps as they have been published a while ago -- but then there wouldn't be much left for the bot to fix in the first place...) Please let me know if you have any other questions. --Gryllida (talk) 22:09, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gryllida@Heavy Water I have a lot of requests left, I would love for them to be taken care of.
Please note, on the next page I could not edit the conversation page because it is also protected: User talk:The New Mikemoral.
I would be happy if you buy there. Neriah (talk) 10:13, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there something there that still requires attention? Gryllida (talk) 22:29, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gryllida I ran the bot now. I would appreciate it if you could handle the other pages that the bot skipped (what needs to be done is to change the internal link that appears on the first page to the name of the third page (you can see what is the first and what is the third by the arrows)), which appear in Special:DoubleRedirects.
I would like to put together a list of requests for you here, but because of the war I don't think I will have the time to do so.
Thanks, and hopefully good news! Neriah (talk) 16:17, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
