The Pentagon[edit]

I'm not convinced that's a good name for a cat, unless there's actually that much news on the building itself. Consider instead Category:US Department of Defense (God, it took an effort to type that with an s and not a c :p). Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 17:08, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good point; I'd better put a note on it. It went on the list for consideration because I found some of our articles linking to w:The Pentagon and w:US Department of Defense, but as a separate category it wouldn't be reliably populated, so it should probably be a mainspace redirect to Category:US Department of Defense.
I have, of course, a reciprocal difficulty with "Ministry of Defence" (yikes :-). --Pi zero (talk) 17:24, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest we ought to delink, except where the building is directly concerned (in cases where the department is never explicitly named, "(the) Pentagon" should be piped to the WP article on the department). lol. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 17:31, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll give it more thought. There's no hurry, since populating any one category suggests several others to add to the list. The problematic list items can be put off quite a long time just by disposing of uncontroversial ones first.
Wikiquote says the "two countries separated by a common language" line is "widely attributed" to George Bernard Shaw; I'd thought it was Mark Twain (and remembered slightly different wording). --Pi zero (talk) 18:34, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category "refereshers"[edit]

First I've bothered to look at this, but I've frequently filled in categories - usually related to people.

I found AWB most useful for this. A "good" search would allow all acticles not in a category, but that might be candidates for such, to rapidly be added to it. Of course, I then migrated to Ubuntu, and now use a mobile phone. A 2nd hand netbook is on my shopping list for next months meagre salary. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:03, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Populating categories is only part of this, and I'm not in a hurry to accelerate the other parts. I'm learning hands-on about what needs doing and what and how to partially automate, and categorizing and {{w}}izing as I go (both, so far, requiring careful thought).
I'm somewhat aware of AWB as one possible approach. I'm leaning toward javascript, mulling over prospects for an aid in the same genus as HotCat, for semi-manually {{w}}izing articles. (I've thought about a tool for categorizing/fixing local {{w}}-links, but that's really not that hard to do by hand, using Microchip's whighlighter, so there's not nearly as much need.) --Pi zero (talk) 19:42, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
