"Foreign suppress"[edit]

@Pi zero: Why do we suppress links to WP in places like this? Is it out of fear {{w}} links will become circular in the future? If so, why don't we just hardcode with [[w:]]? I think both w:Dáil Éireann and w:Seanad Éireann can be useful. I mean, there's not even a chance I will remember which is the upper and which is the lower house when I wake up tomorrow. I don't immediately remember this particular category. In general, though, I'd use foreign=suppress in a situation where I don't want a link to elsewhere, but would like to link locally if-and-when we have a local target. It's that simple. My tolerance for local links is higher than my tolerance for foreign ones: there are links I'd be willing to have if they're local but would consider overlinkage if they were foreign. (A primal motive for {{w}}, before any of the wonderful stuff about categorization, is that a project with lots of foreign links in the text does not feel, psychologically, like a real project. Wikinews used to have mostly links to Wikipedia even when there were available local targets, simply because nobody writing news has time to laboriously check for local targets on every wikilink, and the ubiquity of links to Wikipedia made Wikinews feel more like an adjunct of Wikipedia. A real project has exclusively, or very nearly exclusively, wikilinks in the text that stay within the project.)

Generally, if a link has to be foreign, I use {{w|foreign=force|...}}. --Pi zero (talk) 02:37, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Now starting to remember this category. With only three articles about the whole legislature, no surprise there wasn't support for the two individual houses. And as long as we don't have our own categories for those houses, there's no reason to have separate foreign links for them; if somebody wants to know about them, they can obviously go to the Wikipedia article about the whole and there'll be info about the two houses. On the other hand, if at some point we do have separate categories for the two houses, it'd be fair game to link to them from here. --Pi zero (talk) 03:21, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
