License[edit]

I don't understand why this image isn't available under a license free enough for Wikimedia Commons. Not all projects do upload own images, and asking others to change their rules is not an option. Now I can't reuse it... Such a petty. Ymnes (talk) 14:27, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps acagastya (t · c · b) can speak to this? --Pi zero (talk) 14:32, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes: this image is under a free licence, CC BY 2.5 -- the licence we use for Wikinews projects. Feel free to transfer it to Commons if you want to, but the reason it is uploaded locally is because anyone can overwrite files on Commons and such type of vandalism is hard to detect. If you see the permission, it does not stop you from reusing.

@Acagastya: According to this tool I'm not allowed to transfer it (it sais "Auth not OK"). Are you sure CC BY 2.5 is allowed on Commons? Ymnes (talk) 14:56, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes: In terms of reuse freedom, CC BY licence is better than CC BY-SA, more "free". And it is allowed on Commons. You would have to add c:template:cc-by-2.5 manually -- and transfer it manually, by downloading it, and then uploading it to Commons. Maybe @Green Giant: can tell why Commons' wizard would not provide CC BY 2.5 up front.
•–• 15:10, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No idea why the wizard would not be working but no surprise either. It is one of those things that is on a "to do list" somewhere and should be fixed by the end of the century. Green Giant (talk) 18:30, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Acagastya: I'll do that instead. I see "Auth not OK" is referring to the fact that I had login problems yesterday (I was logged out there now). Meanwhile it gives the failure "ERROR: This page has been protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option turned on: * Commons:Auto-protected files/wikinews/en". Transferring it manually will be the solution indeed. Ymnes (talk) 15:20, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ymnes: yes, any photo on the main page of enwn will be protected on Commons (But this is a local upload, so Commons should not be saying that)
•–• 15:25, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Acagastya: I yet tried, and manually it is forbidden for the same cascading reason that I yet mentioned here above. Ymnes (talk) 15:26, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes: the page name was protected. I uploaded it under different name.File:FIFA World Cup 2026 bid.png
•–• 15:37, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes, Acagastya: This does not sound right. Are you accidentally trying to upload to en.wn instead of to Commons? Because cascading protection, or any other kind of protection, on en.wn should have no effect whatsoever on uploading to Commons. --Pi zero (talk) 15:41, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi zero: When I tried to upload on Commons, few minutes ago, I was told that the page title was protected -- and I believe it was added at the first place to prevent possible vandalism. Green Giant can tell us more, I believe.
•–• 15:47, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I got the error twice on Commons, at first with the tool and later manually. Ymnes (talk) 15:55, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
you will get that error because "File:FWC26 bid.png" title is protected by KrinkleBot, as of now. See c:Commons:Auto-protected files/wikinews/en -- there is mention of that title with no image. The page title is protected.

The filename is protected on Commons because it is in use on the main page here. Please see c:Commons:Auto-protected files for a short explanation i.e. to stop main page vandalism on other wikis. Green Giant (talk) 18:30, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The two filenames now match because I've renamed the Commons copy. Green Giant (talk) 19:59, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
