Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

IRC[edit]

I am currently reviewing your article. Would you mind joining #wikinews or #wikinews-en IRC channel on freenode?
acagastya 18:15, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't feel that is necessary. Ymnes (talk) 18:34, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Do not edit articles when they are tagged {{under review}}. Leave a message at the talk page of the article.
For what it's worth, I can not review the article if you are not willing to help. I can explain you in a better way on IRC. I need a medium for real time communication for the problems in the article.
acagastya 18:37, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you edited an article that had been marked with this template by a community-authorized reviewer. The template exists for a reason; please respect it. --Pi zero (talk) 21:19, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Review comments[edit]

I feel bad that we could not help each other. Well, I left some review comments. I know how that feels. When I joined Wikinews two years ago, four of my initial article did not pass the review (multiple times). My first article to be published was F.C. Barcelona wins La Liga 2014-2015. That too failed thrice. compare it with Messi makes new record as Barça beats Real Madrid 3-2 in LaLiga. You can use the Football Match Reports to see how to deal with the things.
acagastya 22:16, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Curaçao wins maiden Caribbean Cup is published. I read your remark, "Quality is working together on an article." Here, first the author(s) work together, and then the reviewers. That can not happen simultaneously because if new things were added while reviewing, it will break the flow of review.

"ping doesn't seem to work"[edit]

What led you to say that? --Pi zero (talk) 14:46, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Usually, a red number is appearing at the place of the message bell (above in the menu at the right of the user name). Do I understand that you did receive a ping? Ymnes (talk) 14:48, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In this particular case, I saw your remark on RC and read it before I would have noticed a notification; RC is my primary browser tab for en.wn, and since there's a bunch of stuff at the top of it that doesn't change day-to-day, I'm almost always scrolled down a bit so I don't see notifications on that tab. I get notifications when I view other pages, often on other sister projects. In my past experience, we do get notifications from {{ping}} on en.wn, although in fairness I have very little experience with what happens when the template is used with multiple arguments. --Pi zero (talk) 15:18, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You might have enabled a setting to notify you that your mention was sent to th others. The alert would say, "Your mention of XYZ was sent".

Sorry if I came on a bit strong[edit]

My remarks at the water cooler are a bit on the harsh side, imo. Sorry about that. I do have some pretty strong opinions about WikiTribune, and about Jimmy Wales's treatment of Wikinews in relation thereto, so I'm afraid your remarks pushed some of my buttons. --Pi zero (talk) 21:52, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi zero: In fact I read pain in your message, and a lot of blame to others. I don't know if Jimmy Wales has not paid enough attention to Wikinews or whatever has happened between Wales and you. But if you can't beat WT, be at least so smart to copy the texts from there so that you take care that Wikinews keeps on running. But don't always say that the other one doesn't understand, when you mean that you don't want to change. And, of course, I don't know what initiatives you have underway, so I may be wrong at some points. But at least I dare to say so and I dare to change when I need too. Ymnes (talk) 13:22, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand. We are not trying to "beat" WikiTribune: WikiTribune is not trying to do the things that we are trying to do (frankly, we have low opinion of it), so even if we were playing a zero-sum game (which we aren't) we would not be in direct competition with it for the things we are trying to do. (The language "competing news organization" is borrowed, iirc, from our fair-use policy, and should not be taken to suggest that our objectives are exactly the same as some other news org's are; it's more a question of whether some other, for-profit news site would consider us to be potentially "competing" for their market share, but Wikinews is not-for-profit so our view of the situation is different.) As I have explained at the water cooler, copying someone else's material here would be contrary to our objectives; it would be contrary to our objetives even if their material didn't fail our review criteria, but in fact their material is not vetted according to our criteria and, according to another commenter at the water cooler, does fail to meet our criteria. Regarding Jimmy Wales, I am not being nearly as harsh as some I have heard, when discussing Jimmy's actions relative to WikiTribune, Wikinews, and the Wikimedia Foundation; I'm actually trying to give him some benefit of doubt. --Pi zero (talk) 13:35, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nodejs programming needed[edit]

Hello Ymnes. :) Do you program in nodejs? Please see here. Or if you know someone else please link them to the section. Thank you in advance. Gryllida (talk) 00:21, 2 August 2018 (UTC) DSorry, never heard of it. 05:24, 2 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. There were, as I feared, significant neutrality difficulties, which I needed to study it in-depth to diagnose properly (which is why I wasn't able to give more detailed guidance sooner; I'm deeply frustrated I wasn't able to get to your article sooner). There were also verification problems. My review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 21:56, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Just a side note that live chat via IRC is available to help contibutors talk, both about news being written and about news they've spotted elsewhere. Perhaps, if you might wish to join it and stay on the chat for a few days, you might meet a few new people. Might help with staying connected with those who are still around. -Gryllida (talk) 04:50, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your invitation. I'm not a supporter of IRC though and rather leave talks open on the wiki. I'm not a lot overhere anyway. I'm mostly on Dutch Wikipedia and ocassionally on Dutch Wikinews. Ymnes (talk) 17:08, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
