Football: Marcelo signs contract extension with Real Madrid

Yesterday, Brazilian footballer Marcelo signed a contract extension with Spanish capital club Real Madrid, the club announced via their official website. The new contract runs until June 2022.

29-year-old Marcelo, who currently faces a two-match ban for kicking a Levante UD player Jefferson Lerma, joined Los Blancos from Fluminese in the 2006–07 season. Since then, Marcelo has won four Spanish LaLiga titles and three UEFA Champions League titles.

Since joining the club at age eighteen, Marcelo has won a total of seventeen titles with Real Madrid including three UEFA Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups — Supercopa de España — and two each of Copa del Rey and FIFA Club World Cup. During his tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu, Marcelo has featured in 415 matches for the club, and also serves as the vice-captain of the team. Only his compatriot Roberto Carlos has more appearances as a foreign player for Real Madrid with 527 matches. Due to the suspension in the previous league game, Marcelo is to miss upcoming matches against Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

Per the previous contract, Marcelo was tied with the club until June 2020. Last, year, German midfielder Toni Kroos and Welsh midfielder Gareth Bale signed contract extensions with Madrid which also run until June 2022.
