Imho the league cat is likely more useful if reserved for more strongly league-related news. --Pi zero (talk) 15:05, 25 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Pi zero: it should be in Bundesliga category, yes. Also, it needs to be wikified.

@Acagastya: As far as I can see, this is simply a league game. If we put all those in the league categories, it would flood the league categories. We need a clear vision of what the league categories are for. Green Giant and I, as I recall, both felt that they should be for things related to the league as a whole — which raises an interesting question as to whether we actually have enough articles for a bunch of them. On the other hand, I also somewhat recall tending to let the league championship final games stand. (I'm leaving the template because the discussion is active.) --Pi zero (talk) 18:28, 1 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pi zero: Ideally, there should be league seasons. Like for UEFA Euro 2016. That was one tournament. It also contains other articles which may not be match reports. But if there are no league seasons -- (maintaining them is more difficult) a league article can be populated by contract extension, signing players/managers, sponsorship rights and match reports. In any case, just like something happening in Seattle also ends up in Washington category of US', those articles would belong to league as well.

@Acagastya: This seems like a distant cousin to the old question about region (a.k.a. continent) categories, which serve both as a logical union of all news related to any place within the region, and also as a place to put news about the region as a whole. Providing a category for union of categories is important because DPLs don't do unions, they only do intersections; but if a category is flooded with the union of its subcategories, any news about the topic itself, rather than about one of its subparts, would be completely lost in the clutter. That's not a serious problem for region categories, afaik, because I don't off-hand recall any news about the region as a whole rather than its parts, though perhaps I'm forgetting about some. But leagues? I would agree, I think, that when the membership of a league changes, that would belong in the league category. I'm unsure about league championship finals; if finals, what about semi-finals, where does one draw the line? --Pi zero (talk) 18:45, 1 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: leagues do not have finals. The team with most points wins the leage -- it tie, then goals scored, and so on, but there is no knockout until two teams have same points, goals scored, goals conceded, head to head record...On the other hand, national cup matches like DFB Pokal, Copa del Rey, FA Cup are knockout tournaments, having nothing to do with league category (in terms of Wikinews categoriastion)

@Acagastya: Okay, no finals. Wrong characterization on my part. I do recall articles covering a game that determines who wins the league that year, but without an actual final it becomes even more problematic to draw a line for inclusion; if one includes the particular match in which it becomes mathematically certain such-and-such team wins the league, what about a game that makes it almost mathematically certain, or even one that makes it mathematically impossible. But a story about league membership, such as relegation, seems to me to be more about the league as a whole. Of course, then there's the question of whether an article about a team successfully avoiding relegation belongs in the league category. Btw, it seems to me that the existence of subcategories might be used to justify the existence of league categories even if the league category doesn't have at least three articles. Of course, we haven't yet worked out just how we want to handle that, either. --Pi zero (talk) 19:06, 1 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pi zero: um, other news orgs, let it be the BBC, Guardian, Marca — they use La Liga and not the season for match reports. And I think if we bundle the articles in season category, and not in league, it is encyclopaedic. I think articles should be in both the category, because it has something important to do. Similarly, what would you say about club categories? If we are doing league seasons, clubs should have same classification. And that too is encyclopaedic. I would not feel encyclopaedic if anything in LaLiga season X goes to LaLiga. Otherwise, making a fine judgment would be really difficult.
