Hello, new to Wikinews. However, from the talk on the main Wikipedia article on Nelson Mandela, it seems this is the better location for collecting the vast amount of quotes regarding Nelson Mandela's death. Please let me know the best format for organizing and categorizing the various responses be world leaders and influential people. Rselby1 (talk) 16:16, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, one has to do this sort of thing within the framework of the given project. I'll point out that Wikiquote might be an appropriate venue for what you're describing. As for the way we do things:
Each article we publish is a "snapshot in time"; usually an article is in its final form when published. We do allow changes to an article for the first 24 hours after it's published, especially if the article was published as {{breaking}}, which is a notice to readers that there may indeed be changes to the article worth noting within that 24 hours. You'll see from the article history that we have added some additional quotes here. Admittedly, we've also removed the breaking tag.
It's also possible to create a whole separate news article about reaction to an event; I know we've got a reasonably modern example of that somewhere. Preferably, a news article about the reaction would cover more than just quotes; and writing a news article can be tricky, it's something to undertake with the expectation that your first efforts may be a significant learning experience; if you're only gathering quotes, it does seem appropriate to talk to the folks at Wikiquote. --Pi zero (talk) 16:48, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia ZA: attending his funeral

[edit]

Just a quick heads up that Wikimedia ZA (South African chapter for Wikipedia editors) is planning to have two representatives at Madiba's state funeral on the 10th and 11th of December. I expect there to be many photographs and some content coming out of that which could be used in this article. Please let me know if there is any particular information or photographs that you all would like to get from the event. --Discott (talk) 21:22, 8 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Discott. Our project works differently than Wikipedia. Each article we publish is a snapshot in time, not to be modified after publication (with some slight exceptions for the first 24 hours after publication, especially if the article is published with a {{breaking}} tag, as this one was). So, we put great value on original reporting, but it would have to be a separate article about the fresh event, rather than adding to this one. --Pi zero (talk) 22:18, 8 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Discott, If you upload pictures, please let me know and I will be happy to try to write a photo essay around these articles, or you can try to do so. File:Photo Essays for Wikinews.pdf, File:Photojournalist worksheet.pdf, File:Wikinews Photo Essay Formatting.pdf are three guides to assist you in writing a photo essay. Wikinews:Writing a photo essay can pre-load the form to make writing the article easier. --LauraHale (talk) 20:54, 9 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi LauraHale. Apologies for the delay but we have finally uploaded all of the pictures from the death and state funeral of Nelson Mandela. You can find all of the pictures we took and uploaded at the linked category page. There are pictures from both the events in Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as from Pretoria.--Discott (talk) 19:53, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
