This story will become quite dramatic if someone can pick through the ramifications of this story: http://www.news24.com/News24/Africa/News/0,,2-11-1447_1731786,00.html - WFP have now suspended food aid shipments to Somalia. More at Google news. ClareWhite 4 July 2005 15:57 (UTC)

Powerful story and image. There really is no other news nearly as important, imo. Paulrevere2005 5 July 2005 00:56 (UTC)
Thanks; http://irinnews.org/ is a great resource; plus we can use their images. Paulrevere2005, you're right, this is definitely more important than a Boy Scout getting lost in the woods or a teenager missing on an island. -- NGerda July 5, 2005 01:01 (UTC)
The second story isn't April, it's yesterday - it's not US date order. There's a whole load of other stories to confirm it. That means the 900,000 figure came before the shipments stopped. We really should merge the two stories. Sorry not to be in there myself... ClareWhite 5 July 2005 08:30 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the Clareification! -- NGerda July 5, 2005 08:32 (UTC)
HAHA!! Oh go on, my suggested first sentence would be:

900,000 Somalians face starvation after the World Food Programme suspended its programme because of piracy this week. Then onto the OCRA stuff then back to the piracy. ClareWhite 5 July 2005 08:35 (UTC)

Ya, that first sentence I just threw together in the spur of the moment. Hopefully this Live8 thing will make a difference. Rock on!!! -- NGerda July 5, 2005 08:40 (UTC)

Irony of the situation

[edit]

I find it ironic that when a desperate people take desperate measure to support their people, the organization that provides aid to them completely pulls out. -- NGerda July 5, 2005 08:44 (UTC)

the "disturbing" image

[edit]

The original image (of the starving child) with this story of is the most powerful and relevant image I have ever seen regarding this subject. It must stay in front as it tells the story better than the text does. (It has already been removed from the front page once)

Yes, its disturbing. Good that it's disturbing... this is a disturbing story and to try to lessen the disturbance is to interfere with the story.

This photo is also special in some way; maybe it 's the blending of the colour of the dirt(environment) with the child..I don't know exactly what it is..but this photo is a classic artistically and emotionally, imo. Give it its day. Paulrevere2005 5 July 2005 11:38 (UTC)

I agree, but Alas, no one else does. NGerda July 5, 2005 20:40 (UTC)
For what it's worth (nothing at this stage), I agree. The story is about the suffering of the Somalis and the photo shows that far better than the flooded village shot does. If someone is just now learning that news can be disturbing, they have led a unbelievably sheltered life and I don't see how they wandered onto a news website. Two stories in one article?

[edit]

What's going on here? This article seems to contain two seperate stories. Wikinews articles should only concern themselves with one story at a time. Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 12:03 (UTC)

And the bit about the 'WFP suspending shipments' happened three months ago! Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 12:09 (UTC)
Just seen Clare's note above - someone messed up filling in the source template. But why didn't someone fix it, instead of just leaving a note here? Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 12:14 (UTC)

For clarification on one story/one article, see here, specifically: News stories focus on a single current event or phenomenon. If developments to an on-going event or issue occur, start a new story, don't edit an old one. Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 12:16 (UTC)

Dan, I am going to merge the two back together. the title Nine hundred thousand Somalis face food crisis covers both of these developments. -- NGerda July 5, 2005 20:46 (UTC)

A Solution???

[edit]

Somalia has 3,000 km of coastline(I know...it is amazing isn't it). I have an idea. The G8 could enter into a long term lease of the coastal areas(maybe 100 years) and turn them into a tourist destination. All profits would go to the Somalian people via a UN controlled relief fund and 80% of all employees in the "G8 Zone" would have to be Somalian. Perhaps even some big hotel chains etc. would open up on a non-profit basis(there would be profits, but they would go to the Somalians)

Hopefully by the end of the 100 years the profits would have resulted in a new economy and infrastructure for the country.

It could be done as a pilot project and I am sure a lot of Europeans would go for the warm weather in the winter. Paulrevere2005 5 July 2005 20:37 (UTC)
