Indeed, for a reason unknown to me, the results of this event were not covered on the relevant sites, but the event did take place as it was stated in the announcement.

Cancellation of the source from the Russian Geographical Society[edit]

That is an entirely different policy; that is Wikinews:Freshness, or when the article can be published, this is Wikinews:Archive. The archival policy requires no substantive changes be made to an article more than 24 hours after its publication, and adding a source is substantial.
