Be explicit

[edit]

{{editprotected}}"All content created after that date is released under a Creative Commons license which is mentioned at the bottom of each article."

Please be explicit about which Creative Commons license (in this case, Creative Commons Attribution 2.5). 123.24.84.163 (talk) 08:12, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

As part of the project to upgrade the copyright license used by en.wn, pages that mention the specific license version will need to be updated. To make the process easier in the future, we are trying to consolidate the places where we mention the specific version used. We are doing this in part by using {{Current CC Version}}, as discussed here.

Below is the edit we need:

The change we are implementing now involves replacing any occurrences of the following text:

[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/ Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 license]

..with {{Current CC Version}}, which will transclude our current version.

The template currently renders the following; Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Therefore this change can be implemented now.

Once we are ready to do the license upgrade, we can then change the text in that template to reflect the current version and that will in-turn update all pages that include {{Current CC Version}}.

In addition to this page, we have a list of edit-protected pages that need to be changed. It can be found here: Wikinews_talk:Copyright#Pages_to_update_when_license_is_updated_from_2.5_to_4.0

You can see the full discussion about the upgrade here: Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Conclusion_and_implementation_of_upgrade_to_cc-by-4.0

We would like to have these changes in place before August 1, which is our tentative cut-over date.

Thanks in advance!

Then after the cut over date it will read
All content created after that date is released under a Creative Commons license which is mentioned at the bottom of each article. This is currently the Creative Commons Attribution 4 License.
This will be incorrect right? What about just removing the last sentence?

Two questions: (i) how are older articles going to be updated with the respective CC licence, and (ii) I think it's supposed to say "all new articles currently use CC4", right? Leaderboard (talk) 10:30, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard, Hi, the older articles remain licensed under CC 2.5 (post 2005) and public domain (before 2005).
Maybe but then it does not say about those from 2005 to 2024 at all? How can it be resolved? Gryllida (talk) 10:46, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gryllida A bot should be able to do this using an appropriate template, just like how very old articles have {{PD-Article}}. Leaderboard (talk) 12:25, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think that Gryllida is correct that it will be a bit misleading if the template say that the correct cc-license is at the bottom of the articles. So I think that it should either be removed or someone with a bot should add a license template at the bottom of all articles as suggested by Leaderboard. If we remove the line then the users have to figure out which license to use. It would be good service for the readers if we added a template with the correct license. If there is a way to find all articles then it should not be a problem to have a bot add the license. The bot will ofcourse need admin rights because many/most/all articles are protected. --MGA73 (talk) 14:21, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
The footer verbiage will specify license versions based on date. So I assumed we wouldn't update older articles with a template. For example, the footer will eventually read something like this (depending on the date Phabricator does their magic):

All text created after December 16, 2024 is available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License unless otherwise specified. Text created between September 25, 2005 and December 15, 2024...[this is where we merge in existing text].

This was discussed previously here[1]. I know we've had discussions scattered across multiple pages, which makes it hard to follow everything (which is also why I tried to consolidate the discussions).
If it is decided we need a template, we (Leaderboard) should move forward immediately with developing the bot and requesting admin access for the bot. We also need to create the template. For all of those reasons, I think its easier and cleaner to use verbiage in the footer and not worry about creating a bot to place a template. However, if it is decided a template is better, I will add it to our list of action items in the project page: Wikinews talk:2024 Copyright license upgradeMichael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 14:55, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Given that one of the plans is to have the bot automatically archive articles, I recommend asking for admin rights for User:Leaderbot sooner rather than later. Leaderboard (talk) 15:19, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree. We'll need to make sure the bot functions as expected before running it against all published, non-archived articles. Are you up to speed on the Wikinews:Archive conventions and the mechanics of archiving? For example, the bot should always leave roughly ten articles un-archived (but protected) so that there are always several articles listed on the main page. There is also work that is normally done with the archiveurl parameter of {{Source}}. I'm not sure how that can be done automagically (but I'm not a coder). ツ Maybe we should incorporate that into the reviewers job at the time of publishing. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 15:33, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Not fully, but the bot can be adjusted appropriately. Leaderboard (talk) 17:34, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like a good plan to let User:Leaderbot do it. --MGA73 (talk) 18:22, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
What happened to the bot that previously archived articles? Gryllida (talk) 22:20, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think based on the above there is no need to edit this page and add 'Current CC Version' template into it now, as it will need to be reworded on the date anyway. Gryllida (talk) 22:21, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

I started a discussion at Wikinews_talk:2024_Copyright_license_upgrade#Mark_all_articles_with_cc-by-2.5? about if we should mark the articles with cc-by-2.5 or not. Feel free to join the discussion. I think we should reserve this page here to discussions about the template "PD-Article". --MGA73 (talk) 15:52, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
