Getting started as a contributor
|
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. | |
|
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Re: Your Article
If you haven't found someone else to help you with it by 2:15 EST, I'll help you out. I've got class until then, so I'll be busy. --Thunderhead (t - e - c) 12:56, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Your edits, and audio Wikinews
Hi. It's great to see an audio Wikinews contribution.
Edits to a published article are reviewed in-depth, and the range of edits accepted is limited beyond 24 hours after publication of the article due to our archive policy. Reviewing your edits to the article, I was inclined to reject some of them, and was in doubt about others, which left me, awkwardly, further uncertain how to handle your audio which uses your edited wording. (I'd be most interested to hear User:Blood Red Sandman's thoughts on this.) --Pi zero (talk) 12:49, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- There's also a couple mistakes on the Nevada one (haven't listened to the others yet). Some audio is better than none, but in this case people are being misquoted as a result. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 13:17, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Under review
Hi. The state-of-emergency lawsuit article is under review. It may be published, soon, but will have changed by then. It'd have a different headline, too. --Pi zero (talk) 22:35, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
- Now published. --Pi zero (talk) 23:10, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
Hi, how do you read me
Hi, I included you at your request into the "pingrr" list recently. You'd've received a few dozens of "RR" echo notifications in the last two weeks. Did they arrive? Could you please tell me what is preventing you from responding to them?
Revision requests are an essential part of the collaboration process, and your participation is vitally important. Please provide me with the feedback, it would help me a lot with making this process more efficient and easier for you to use.
Thanks. Gryllida (talk) 05:23, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
Live chat software trial
Live chat software trial (August-September 2025)
Hi, i am running a software to make live chat easier to use. It requires installation of QuasselDroid on Android, Quassel Client on Windows or Mac or Linux, and I don't know what on iOS (let me know if this is your main platform). The software would connect you to the official IRC channel for Wikinews and stay connected including all chat history, including when you closed the app. I am achieving this by hosting it on my Quassel Core on my server. If you are interested in trying this option, please install the Quassel Client software, and after this is done (not before), ensure you have a working email in your Special:Preferences so i can email you login credentials, and specify your desired IRC nickname. Please note this is open source software with low bandwidth usage and the communication is only via text, so it is not privacy invasive. This platform is older than the web, irc existed since 1980s. Thanks. Gryllida 22:09, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, please install the Quassel Client, it is free/open source, low bandwidth, low RAM and CPU usage
- and tell me your desired nickname
- I would greatly appreciated if you could use it for a few weeks and then leave me some feedback. This chat platform has 3 reviewers on it, and yourself being sitting in chat all 24/7 via this software could make collaboration much easier as then others could send messages to the group while your device is offline, and you could get notifications on mobile. Thanks Gryllida 20:11, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
