Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hello,it is immunize (talk · contribs).I am also active on Wikipedia, where I edit medical articles.

Mikemoral♪♫ 20:32, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Wikinews is not Wikipedia, your article is not news and is going to be deleted. --Diego Grez let's talk 18:44, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But is it not needed to have at least some non-news articles on wikinews to put the news articles into context. Immunize (talk) 18:48, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, we don't do that. We link to Wikipedia. --Diego Grez let's talk 18:49, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So what will happen to the article (PS, I am very active on wikipedia, much more than on Wikinews). Immunize (talk) 18:52, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It will simply be deleted because Wikinews is for news, Wikipedia is for encyclopedic articles. --Diego Grez let's talk 18:55, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think from now on I will mainly stick to editing wikipedia 'only though I might make the occasional comment on a discussion page. Immunize (talk) 18:58, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Long wikibreak, possibly permanent[edit]

Becuase of this experience I am taking a long wikibreak, possibly permanent. Please contact me at my English wikipedia user talk page if you wish to speak with me. Best wishes. Immunize (talk) 17:24, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So you are retiring because someone told you your article was not news and therefore not suitable for Wikinews? Mikemoral♪♫ 19:32, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We probably don't care, but it's really ... disappointing that you are retiring because I told you your article was not news. Probably you can help us writing articles on medical news, etc. Just a suggestion, take it or leave it. --Diego Grez return fire 19:36, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I just don't understand why do you retire when people doesn't agrees with you: [1] [2] --Diego Grez return fire 19:38, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I went into Wikinews thinking that this was a place where encyclopedic content was acceptable or even needed in order to put the news articles into context. As I found out, I was completely wrong. I currently am most active on Wikipedia, where I mainly revert vandalism, and ctaying here would reduce the amount of time that I could spend reverting vandalism. All in all, I do not think it is worth it for me to stay involved on Wikinews. However, I may return to simple Wikipedia. Best wishes. Immunize (talk) 14:58, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Immunize, you aren't aware that we can link directly to Wikipedia through interwikis? If there was some sort of term in our articles that was confusing, we wouldn't have to link mumps, we'd do mumps, which goes to the corresponding Wikipedia article and saving the need for us to duplicate efforts here. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:47, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am now aware of the existence of the interwiki links but I do not believe I was at the time of writing the mumps article. Immunize (talk) 20:45, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am retiring here[edit]

I have decided, after some thought, to permanently retire from editing on Wikinews. If you desire to contact me, do it on a wikimedia project where I am active, such as English Wikipedia, where my amin account is, or on Simple English wikipedia or Meta-wiki. Note I am currently inactive on Wikimedia commons and Wiktionary. Immunize (talk) 19:25, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Give Wikinews another chance[edit]

Admittedly you started editing wikinews on a bad note. But why let that make you quit? If you want I can mentor you to become a wiki news editer :) Irunongamesplay 20:51, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've decided to take a wikibreak-a long one regardless of what the template says, and then eventually think about possibly writing some news articles. Immunize (talk) 22:12, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
