Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Dates on articles

[edit]

Hello,

I presume you too are from the North East of England! I'm down in Teesside, so hello!

When you write a story, be sure to put the sources in reverse chronological order (the newest, second newest, third newest, older...) and to stlye the dates in the format 'October 29, 2009'.

Good luck! I published one of your Newcastle Utd articles. Computerjoe's talk 22:50, 29 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Excellent, thanks. Noted. PerryWhite (talk) 06:52, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate

[edit]

Hi, unfortunately i had to tag your article as a duplicate of this one, written some time earlier. Could you perhaps help me merge all the information into that article? I'd like to develop this into an in-depth piece. Thanks. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:38, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do what you like. I really can't be bothered anymore. I hate this crappy site with a passion. I swear to God I haven't been working on this for more than two hours, yet your article was nowhere to be seen when I began, I never would have begun it if I had known. Infact I know when I began it because I only started it about half an hour after Cameron stoppped speaking, around 3pm. Your article is completely different to mine in structure, I can't even begin to think how to merge it, so what the hell, I think this has been a wasted afternoon for me...bloody Wikinews. Use what you want from it, if anything. I'm done. PerryWhite (talk) 15:50, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry you've become so disenchanted - please, don't let this discourage you from writing. All Wikinews writers, sooner or later, will be unfortunate enough to spend time on an article that turns out to be a duplicate - myself included, I can very much sympathise with this. I don't see that the structures are that different - in fact, I've already been able to merge about half of your article into the other one, and will add even more. Please don't think you've wasted your time - to the contrary, your contribution was much appreciated. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Cheers. It's my own fault realy, I have this bad habit of trying to write the whole article in one go. I do the same on Wikipedia, but it has obvious dangers here. I think what probably happened was I checked the main page but not the newsroom before starting. I don't use the place often enough to not make such n00b howlers. PerryWhite (talk) 16:04, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think that was the problem. I had actually started my article about an hour and a half before you started yours, by looking at the history. Neither were published on the main page, so you wouldn't have seen it if you didn't check the newswroom. Anyways, I really like your writing style, and am looking for more ways to incorporate your prose into the other piece. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:08, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, the merge is more or less complete; I've included most of the information in your article into this. Your afternoon wasn't wasted at all, it contributed to an excellent, in-depth piece. :) Thanks for your efforts. Tempodivalse [talk] 22:36, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
