Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, SandisterTei! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Article headline conflusion
[edit]Just a note to point out, you've created a second version of the article under a different headline. Not sure whether you meant to do that. --Pi zero (talk) 16:10, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- No I didn't mean to do that. I didn't know what to do to restore article and make necessary changes.
- I saw your latest review. Thanks for the pointers. I am determined to write a Wikinews worthy article about the mourning. Today is the last day and hopefully I can do better
- SandisterTei (talk) 10:22, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. The original article is at Ghana begins three-day mourning of late President Mills. It got there after I moved ti twice during review; the reasons for the moves, and for various other edits during review, are in the article history.
- Hopefully you can bring it into shape. Keep in mind, the first article is the hardest, as one is learning the basics of Wikinews writing; many first-time contributors don't achieve publication on the first article they attempt. We say our initial learning curve is steep but thankfully short, after which of course we never stop learning, but the learning only rarely involves losing an article. --Pi zero (talk) 10:52, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Can I change the title to Ghana buries the late president Mills today? SandisterTei (talk) 12:03, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- Sure. Rename the page; your account here is old enough (more than 4 days) for you to be allowed to move pages.
- You'll need to source the event, of course. --Pi zero (talk) 12:07, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Published. Congrats! See detailed history of edits during review.
It's always good to provide more background with these sorts of articles (down toward the bottom, that would be of course, in the inverted pyramid structure). But heck, that's a refinement. You've got one published! --Pi zero (talk) 14:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
A cookie for your help!
[edit]Thank you for your help! The article looks clean now. I have learnt a lot. I just realised the last story from Ghana was in 1998. Thank you! SandisterTei (talk) 15:59, 10 August 2012 (UTC) |
oops 2009 I mean
SandisterTei (talk) 17:24, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Published. :-) See review comments and (acknowledging I manged to get myself confused over his predecessor's date of death) detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 14:27, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you and all noted! My second article on Wikinews published! SandisterTei (talk) 14:44, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
