Hi and thanks for your contribution of this article. It has now been published. One comment, I would like to make, is don't add as many sources as you can find. Add only those that you use. Replies to your questions

1) Is there something I can do in-line to bring attention to assertions in an article which I cannot trace to the sources?

There isn't any specific template for it, like WP does. However, you can simply make a note of what you could not verify on the article's talk page, and fail the review, marking the article with {{tasks|re-review}}.

2) How much cleanup can you do on an article before you disqualify yourself as an "uninvolved" reviewer?

There's no written rule on this, it's really up to the reviewer's judgement. If you only do copyediting (i.e. grammar fixes, formatting, etc.) then you can probably still count as an uninvolved editor. If you significantly add to the story's content, though (like adding paragraph or two), that might already disqualify you from reviewing the article.
