Getting started as a contributor
|
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. | |
|
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Thank you.

Something about Greenland
[edit]Greenland isn’t a country. It hasn’t had independence ever. It has always been an autonomous territory of the Danish Realm. If you could fix this, like it did, I would appreciate spreading some true information instead of misinformation about Greenland being a country. These edits can be very hurtful to the world, example: someone changed the Vatican flag under the hat to red instead of white. Now, the flag is seen everywhere. Same thing with Greenland; most people think it’s a country when it’s really not. I understand if a bot you programmed did this edit, however if it was you, I would appreciate if you could fix it. Thanks. Bennett1203 (talk) 14:35, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for catching that. Fixed. Ternera (talk) 14:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah lol. I was just checking around countries on this sister project to Wikipedia. Bennett1203 (talk) 15:14, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Hi Ternera
[edit]Hi Ternera, would you like to be added to the 'users who can make article revisions by request' group? Then you'll get 'Minor revision requested' or 'Major revision requested' notifications in Echo (top right corner of the page) when someone requests an article edit.
This contribution -- with such edits potentially taking only 3-5 minutes each -- would help a lot to get the articles written and published faster, as the news story reviewer isn't disqualified from reviewing by making a substantial edit to article content.
This is particularly fruitful to be involved into this if you're often logged into the wiki (not necessarily Wikinews, i.e. Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons would work equally well, as Wikinews notifications get delivered to all sister wikis) and reading the notifications on it, and have time to make the edits. If you agree, I will add you to the list at the {{pingrr}} page. What do you think? Gryllida (talk) 19:31, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida, I could probably help with that if I happen to see the notification. Usually I am here fighting vandalism but I can certainly try to help with other things too! Ternera (talk) 19:38, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Done added. Thanks a lot. Let me know anytime if you have any questions about the revision requests or anything. Gryllida (talk) 19:41, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Hi, how do you read me
[edit]Hi, I included you at your request into the "pingrr" list recently. You'd've received a few dozens of "RR" echo notifications in the last two weeks. Did they arrive? Could you please tell me what is preventing you from responding to them?
Revision requests are an essential part of the collaboration process, and your participation is vitally important. Please provide me with the feedback, it would help me a lot with making this process more efficient and easier for you to use.
Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 05:22, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida. I did receive the pings but have been too busy to respond to them at this time. You can remove me from it if you want. Thanks. Ternera (talk) 13:09, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your participation recently. As you may be able to offer me an additional perspective from another wiki. Could you please suggest how to collaborate more properly? IRC live chat WN:IRC was used a lot in the past, but majority of current reviewers are not using it, and are unresponsive to IMs and SMS and emails - some others are, but not in real time. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Gryllida (talk, live chat) 13:11, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida. I may suggest Discord as an alternative. It keeps message history and has a more modern interface than IRC. Ternera (talk) 13:08, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
- ok, i added https://discord.gg/dvBt5mxw unofficial server for Wikinews Gryllida (talk, live chat) 12:49, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

Top article in July!
[edit]
Thank you for contributing to the article titled "20-year-old astrophotographer captures rare solar eclipse on Saturn." The article has the most number of page-views of all articles published in July of 2025.
Keep up the great work!
Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:33, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for all of your work on the article too, Michael! Ternera (talk) 16:35, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
Live chat software trial
[edit][if you are not using quassel that is online 24/7 already...]
Live chat software trial (August-September 2025)
Hi, i am running a software to make live chat easier to use. It requires installation of QuasselDroid on Android, Quassel Client on Windows or Mac or Linux, and I don't know what on iOS (let me know if this is your main platform). The software would connect you to the official IRC channel for Wikinews and stay connected including all chat history, including when you closed the app. I am achieving this by hosting it on my Quassel Core on my server. If you are interested in trying this option, please install the Quassel Client software, and after this is done (not before), ensure you have a working email in your Special:Preferences so i can email you login credentials, and specify your desired IRC nickname. Please note this is open source software with low bandwidth usage and the communication is only via text, so it is not privacy invasive. This platform is older than the web, irc existed since 1980s. Thanks. Gryllida 22:08, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, please install the Quassel Client, it is free/open source, low bandwidth, low RAM and CPU usage
- and tell me your desired nickname
- I would greatly appreciated if you could use it for a few weeks and then leave me some feedback. This chat platform has 3 reviewers on it, and yourself being sitting in chat all 24/7 via this software could make collaboration much easier as then others could send messages to the group while your device is offline, and you could get notifications on mobile. Thanks Gryllida 20:10, 10 August 2025 (UTC)

Just curious
[edit]Have you contributed any articles here?Bddpaux (talk) 15:20, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @Bddpaux, I have helped with cleaning up some articles before they go live. I have not written any articles from scratch though. Why do you ask? Ternera (talk) 02:54, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Just wondering—-we need good reporters around here.😁😁—Bddpaux (talk) 14:47, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
Did everyone leave?

You've got email
[edit]I sent you an email via wiki-mail. It's not overly important, just a heads-up. Thanks as always for your help!Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 21:35, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- I've just replied. Thanks. Ternera (talk) 21:36, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
Proposed nomination
[edit]Hi Ternera I would like to nominate you for 'crat here. The commitment is pretty low, close new user right permissions if I am not around. I usually am. I can document it on a page so that users would come to you with requests if needed, and you don't need to monitor the requests incessantly. Would you agree to such commitment? Gryllida 23:34, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Gryllida, it is definitely something I could assist with. How would it work though as I am not a sysop on this wiki? Usually I see crat given to long-term sysops on projects. Ternera (talk) 00:11, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Is there a policy against it? And would you wish to be sysop, in case this is required? Running very thin on people these days and I would trust you with either, as in case someone disappears for a while. Gryllida 00:12, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Noting that running as admin would be a higher commitment, and initially I was not looking for requesting it. I am going to nominate for 'crat, if discussion says you must be active sysop, then have to follow it, but in nomination I will state that this is for managing user permissions only. Gryllida 00:17, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Okay @Gryllida, sounds good. I tried to check the bureaucrat policy but see it is simply a redirect. Guess it is probably fine to try this in that case. I already have sysop rights on this project for uncontroversial maintenance as a global sysop, so I do not think we need to worry about local sysop rights. Thanks. Ternera (talk) 00:38, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you :-) Gryllida 04:17, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
