Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

I'm currently blocked for Open proxy.

[edit]

Sorry I didn't realize I had a vpn on.... You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:

Your IP address is in a range that has been blocked on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis.

The block was made by ‪AmandaNP‬. The reason given is No open proxies .

Start of block: 07:08, 7 October 2023 Expiry of block: 07:08, 7 October 2025 Your current IP address is 54.38.78.132. The blocked range is 54.38.0.0/16.

Please include all above details in any queries you make. If you believe you were blocked by mistake, you can find additional information and instructions in the No open proxies global policy. Otherwise, to discuss the block please post a request for review on Meta-Wiki. You could also send an email to the stewards VRT queue at stewards@wikimedia.org including all above details.

Tyrol5 has reviewed BigKrow's request to be unblocked, and the result was declined.
The reason given by Tyrol5 was: No block against the account existed.
Further debate can proceed here, however, the administrator's decision may be final, and the result of administrative consensus.

BigKrow (talk) 16:15, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

If you've turned off the VPN, you shouldn't be blocked now. It isn't a block on your account. Heavy Water (talk) 18:50, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, clearly you turned it off. So there shouldn't be any further action needed. Heavy Water (talk) 19:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok thank you. If something comes up I will let you know. BigKrow (talk) 21:07, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the ping. I am procedurally declining the request, since there was technically no block to review, to remove it from the queue. On a related point, BigKrow, please do just be careful about the use of multiple accounts. Appears you've had a half dozen or so just in the past few months. If you are actively using/editing/switching between them, it is best practice to disclose as much on the respective user pages, to avoid confusion. Thanks much. Tyrol5 (talk) 22:15, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, as far as I can tell they're not used simultaneously (although the IP is). Heavy Water (talk) 00:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Tagging articles as abandoned

[edit]

Hi. When tagging articles as abandoned, it should be done with a date parameter. This can most easily be achieved by using {{subst:aband}}. It will automatically resolve the current date and start the two day countdown. Cheers, SVTCobra 14:56, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Much appreciated, thank you! BigKrow (talk) 16:09, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SVTCobra {{abandoned|December 26, 2023}}

i guess working now, it was a red link so i didn't think it would work. Thanks. BigKrow (talk) 16:16, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, tagging with author request is good enough unless other editors have worked on it. It was an interesting event which I had not seen at the top of my news headlines, so I was a bit disappointed you chose this route. SVTCobra 00:43, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have a bad habit of deleting I'm sorry.... BigKrow (talk) 00:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Tagging for speedy deletion

[edit]

Hi BigKrow, a couple of comments. First, there is no need to tag abandoned articles for speedy, even if it's been a couple of days since the countdown has run out. They already appear in a tracking category for Sysops to see as needing deletion. Second, in other cases where {{speedy}} or {{delete}} (they are the same, by the way) is appropriate, please give a valid reason. The list of valid reasons can be seen here. Thanks, SVTCobra 22:07, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Related is NIETians shine at Smart India Hackthon 2023 which you sought to have speedied because the user was blocked. The user was blocked because the name suggested representing National Institute of Engineering & Technology at Greater Noida. It is not permitted for institutions to have an account which can be used by anybody there. If they want to contribute, the accounts need to represent a single individual. Thank you very much! I'll try to create a new story! BigKrow (talk) 23:53, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I reviewed this, but it did not pass. My review comments are firm in their wording, but I was not intending to insult you. I write here to make sure you don't take it the wrong way.
You start a lot of articles but very few are fully developed and very few get published. The topics of your articles are so varied (from global news to hyper-local news), it almost seems like you pick them at random. While the aim of Wikinews is to have broad coverage of news from all over the world, this may not be the best way to approach article creation. In my experience, the best articles are written when the author really cares about the subject and wants to tell that story. If you are not a soccer fan, you may not be the best person to write about Lazio v Roma.
So, I hope you can think on this. What really peaks your interest when you read the news? Is it politics? Science? Crime? Economics? Find something you care about and really get into it. Learn about it. Get sources; not just the latest but maybe something for background. Cheers, SVTCobra 02:39, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I read your whole message, thank you for just letting me be here. BigKrow (talk) 03:25, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wikinewsie category

[edit]

I created your wikinewsie category for you. I hope you don't mind. It's a hidden category, not visible in article space.

Category:BigKrow_(Wikinewsie)

Feel free to edit the verbiage on the category however you like. Check out what other users have on theirs for inspiration. Just be sure to preserve the __HIDDENCAT__ line.

You can link to it from your user page and/or signature so others can see a list of articles you've gotten published. You can also link to it from off-wiki, if you have a blog, or social media page, etc for your journalism work.

I typically add the category to articles once they're published, not before. I already added it to Islamic_State_Khorasan_Province_responsible_for_more_than_60_people_killed_including_children_and_hundreds_injured_at_Krasnogorsk,_Russia_concert_at_Crocus_City_Hall.

Asia is not a part of Russia

[edit]

Still, part of Russia is in Asia, so maybe it makes sense, but if anything Russia (and frankly the majority of the population isn't) in Asia. Referring to edits on Russian President Vladimir Putin ready for ceasefire talks with Ukraine Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 23:31, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ok. BigKrow (talk) 00:31, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, using only Category:Europe and not Category:Asia seems appropriate here. But if it were, say, an article about the Russian presidential election, even if nothing in Asian Russia was specifically mentioned, it would make sense to put it in both; Category:Russia also goes in both. Heavy Water (talk) 21:01, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

A couple of issues:

  • The copyvio detector gives a 53% match. Mostly it is due to extensive quotes. I would suggest breaking up Macron's comment, which currently runs to six lines. It's simply too long to read in one breath.
  • The second sentence in the second paragraph doesn't actually say anything. I suggest either removing it or expanding it.
  • Some minor grammar such as the last sentence, which is missing the word "policy" before the quote marks?
  • The article needs rrnaming. I suggest: "Ukraine allowed to strike Russian territory near Kharkiv with US weapons".

Otherwise looks good to go. I thought I'd point these things out here rather than putting on a negative review, so you can quickly fix them. [24Cr][talk] 09:04, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Staleness

[edit]

I just thought I'd share my thoughts on this because you seem to be very attentive to this issue. Our normal route is to wait until four days have passed without edits (or talkpage discussion) and then tag with subst:aband. Then if there are no edits for another two days, it would be deleted. I have been thinking of a proposal to reduce this from 4+2 days to 3+1 days or even 2+1 days to encourage more publishing, especially given last year we increased the window of freshness from 2-3 days to 5-7 days and reduced the minimum length to 100 words. What would you think of a shrinking of the subst:aband route? [24Cr][talk] 19:28, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm for it, @Cromium BigKrow (talk) 19:29, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Shrinking? I would've thought, if anything, we'd lengthen it to 8+2 days, since the current window was designed for compatibility with the old freshness window. Heavy Water (talk) 20:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Heavy Water, @Cromium, ok sorry I jumped to conclusions feel free to make your own decisions, thanks. I'll go with the consensus.... BigKrow (talk) 21:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have started a section at Wikinews:Water_cooler/proposals#Staleness. I am open to suggestions for increasing the timeframe too. I just feel that changing these kinds of things may be a way of improving our workflow. BigKrow, your opinion is just as valid as ours, so feel free to chime in. Category:Bollywood

[edit]

Good try but I'm going to delete it because it is very unlikely to be populated at the moment. The article which is tagged as being in the category - well, it isn't really about Bollywood. For it to be a viable category, it would need at least three relevant articles i.e. about Bollywood in general rather than actors or movies which happen to be part of Bollywood. The only example I can find is Bollywood cricket victory in Yorkshire charity match, which involves a sports team representing the industry. [24Cr][talk] 19:35, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi BigKrow, deleted the above story as stale, sorry, I wasn't around when it was written. It would be a pleasure for me to edit and review a similar story if the event recurs (I find weather events comprehensible to review). Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 20:15, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please fact check. Gryllida (talk) 23:28, 18 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to follow newer drafts

[edit]

Hi BigKrow

Some people read the "recent changes" page constantly. Some others refresh "Newsroom" a few times a day.

There is an easier alternative to follow latest drafts: visit Wikinews:Water cooler/assistance, either manually once a week, or click "Subscribe" button at right top. It will Notify or Email (depending on configuration) when a new topic is added to the page. Then you can see what to edit and what are main requests for help with it, without spending too much time on the site.

Editing other drafts -- and answering questions at the water cooler linked above, which is the less time consuming version -- may help reviewers spend less time on these other drafts, and review your articles faster.

Hope it helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. Gryllida (talk) 22:47, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida, I'm sporadic sorry. BigKrow (talk) 23:19, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gryllida, I started a new article though. Thanks. BigKrow (talk) 23:20, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

subscription technical question

[edit]

Hi @BigKrow :-)

I am asking for some technical information when you have a moment:

  1. You wrote the page Improvised explosive device attack at the Santa Maria Courthouse in Santa Maria, California injures five people, one person arrested
  2. When you open Talk:Improvised explosive device attack at the Santa Maria Courthouse in Santa Maria, California injures five people, one person arrested. At right top. Does it say 'Subscribe' or 'Ubsubscribe'? I.e., are you already automatically subscribed to receive notifications of new messages on the talk page or not?

There is no urgency in my new message on the talk page - just want to check how the wiki is configured on your account (I will ask several other contributors also) as this may affect communication with authors.

Thank you so much. Gryllida (talk) 23:45, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's usually up there I didn't see it last checked. Thanks @Gryllida BigKrow (talk) 00:09, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Were you already subscribed automatically? Gryllida (talk) 00:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Courthouse article

[edit]

Terribly sorry that went stale. A bunch of work stuff jumped up on me and I just couldn't make it happen. Please try to gatwick that article and re-submit. Bddpaux (talk) 16:19, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately I don't know how to Gatwick an article. @Bddpaux, thank you. BigKrow (talk) 16:20, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the trick is: don't over complicate it. Think of it like this: Most big new stories have all kinds of stuff happening around them. So, we are a bit stale on the actual event itself. But: maybe there has been some courtroom stuff surrounding the guy, and you could use 70% of what is currently in this article, to build that article. See? That is the general spirit of gatwicking. This didn't make it, but there are (maybe) articles where his Mom said something or his priest said something, or the police searched his home or a storage unit. Then (considering 'inverted pyramid' style), you can put almost all of this near the bottom of THAT article. That is a 48-second intro to gatwicking.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:26, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok thank you but if an article goes stale won't it be eventually deleted? @Bddpaux BigKrow (talk) 16:28, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, yes. However: There is time for you to grab the text of this article, throw it into a sandbox -- then use that to build a fresh article. It takes a knack, but you can catch onto it -- I promise! And: if you gatwick this, I 100% promise that I will review that article in a timely manner.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:37, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux, I think it's dead in the water just saying we tried though thanks. BigKrow (talk) 16:26, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi BigKrow
Sorry about the article being stale and now marked as abandoned. The main issue was a quote unverified.
@Michael.C.Wright in the interests of publishing while article is still fresh, you can remove material which is not verifiable, I believe? Please let me know if you're okay with this. :-)
@BigKrow
  • Could you please write another story this week and leave me a message? I'm happy to help you with getting it published. Please try to find something that happened on the same day.
  • Please consider joining live chat -- hang around there 24/7, don't close the chat window -- as then communication can happen more quickly and such questions can be answered way before the article becomes stale.
Regards, Gryllida (talk) 04:33, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you are referring to the quote of Van de Camp, I did remove it.[1]
I was ready to publish the article based on my pre-review of it, which was technically a formal review[2] with the results reported using {{pre-review}}. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 15:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael.C.Wright that looked good thanks. It was five days after the event. I guess there can be some time limit, e.g. if 12 hours after a pre review nobody complained then you can publish. Gryllida (talk) 07:01, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I assumed I would let it sit 24 hours. It went under review again less than an hour after I took it out from under my review. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 16:11, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

I am looking for help with news writing:

  • Please write about something that happened today. Aim for tiny report with two sources and less than 150 words.
  • I will share feedback and do my best to help you with it getting published.
  • Repeat the same each three days for two weeks.

Then in two weeks we can come back and think what to do next.

It is a 20-30 minutes each 3 days commitment. Are you interested? If so, please ping me or leave me a message when a story is ready for me to look at.

Regards, Gryllida (talk) 07:03, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Date

Why did you take the date out? If this is because a new week started, then please insert absolute date? It is part of WN:5W?

Thanks, 🙂 Gryllida (talk) 11:56, 12 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, @Gryllida BigKrow (talk) 16:19, 12 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

placement of infobox

[edit]

[3] seems to have made article a lot longer and infobox starts at the end. Possibly typo? Thanks heaps for your help. :-) Gryllida (talk) 22:54, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hmm I thought shorter huh.... but thanks @Gryllida BigKrow (talk) 23:20, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
