Original reporting

Since our last edition, 18 articles have claimed original reporting. Some highlights:

Several others wrote stories based on television sources. The Wikinews Reports blog activity was mostly related to some of these stories. You can ask any of the blog authors if you want to help out on the blog.

Editor's note

Summer's over, and contributions seem to have increased a bit lately. I'd like to thank and welcome some of our newest community members for that: be sure to make Eric Wester, TheFearow, Theory, LaraLove, ISD and others feel most welcome! --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:32, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Site activity
  • Wikinews is approaching 10'000 articles. Spread the word!
  • A Wikinews:World News Quiz has been set up after the Quiz extension was added to our MediaWiki repertoire. Users who take the quiz are invited to post their scores on the talk page.
  • Substantial changes have been made to the main page recently. TheFearow has implemented a dynamic news ticker - see Wikinews:Ticker for information and the template at Template:Ticker. Currently only available for almost every browser that isn't IE. IlyaHaykinson added the Template:Lead article with large image to the main page, which is currently the subject of a poll. A complete main page redesign is also being discussed.
  • User:Cspurrier has kicked off an ongoing mailing list discussion on the topic of setting up some kind of official organisation to issue press cards and support our off-site activities, like a Wikinews Chapter.
IRC activity
  • Some of the IRC topics include slow server activity, tinyurl's, the nearing of the 10'000th article on Wikinews, ... (add more here if you know more...)

The ticker

Hi ! I would like to signale you a bug on the french WN ticker. When you are clicking on some links, they lead to an unexisting page because of a problem of URL. As an example, the ticker France : confirmation de l'annulation d'une élection municipale partielle à Anchamps should point to [1] whereas it points to : [2]. As you can easily see it, the ticker code introduce (for a space before :) the following code %26#160.3B which is created instead of a space or an underscore insertion. Have you any idea to debug it ? See you ! Grimlock 09:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

On {{W}}

We used to have that already. It failed on WN:DR, so I doubt it will last. :) irid:t 21:35, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please also note that Category:Overly complex systems designed by TheFearow should not be added to categories you create. We are not Wikipedia. Thanks :) FellowWiki Newsie 21:36, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's pretty buried. You know you can type [[w:Article|]] and it will expand, right? irid:t 21:37, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
What test? FellowWiki Newsie 21:43, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Sounds like a good idea. FellowWiki Newsie 22:13, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted to say

*hug* Thank you for making it go away! Thank you thank you thank you! *hug* irid:t 22:28, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

You know what you did. :) irid:t 22:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I saw that, actually. I largely agree with everything you say there. Although I balk on moving non-English submissions to other Wikinews languages. It's frustrating enough to cope with articles that we can't read. It's worse to try and navigate a wikinews that I can't read at the same time. irid:t 22:33, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{w}}

I just nominated that template for deletion as it has been deleted twice already, and really isn't very useful. Bawolff 21:08, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question

Are you from Wikipedia? 24.251.234.86 18:56, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yet another ticker question

Hello the TheFearow. I am mainly active on de.wikinews. Is it possible to implement the ticker there? Of course, I'll ask the community if they want to use it somewhere, first. It's really nice tool. --SonicR 21:53, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding {{WTF}}, and, oh by the way

Well, I am really sorry for creating the whole mess surrounding {{WTF}}. I wasn't aware that so many people would have a problem with it. I really feel the DR on it is pretty ridiculous, but, what can you do. It doesn't look like it will be deleted (no consensus on what I've seen so far) but, even so, as you and I are the only contributers, we can opt to delete it ourselves.

I mean, if you think that is a better route, since that's how you deleted. :)

Man. Drama. I didn't think this still happened on Wikinews. Heh. irid:t 23:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and by the way!

Thanks for including {{Tasks}} on two articles. That made my heart warm. :) irid:t 23:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Matt

Confusing username change, but we'll get used to it. Welcome Matt! --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 20:02, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ticker broken?

The ticker has disappeared from the main page. I have no clue why. Good news is, it is still functioning on the French Wikinews. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 00:25, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

uTube story

Not to mention your original reporting, I know. I try to fight... I'll be doing something, trying to fight it I guess. Regards. -Edbrown05 10:15, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ticker on Wikipedia

Hi,

I'd like to add the ticker to my Wikipedia user page but so far my attempts have been unsuccessful. It's the best feature I've seen so far, and would even love to see it integrated into the Wikipedia main page.

Thanks in advance for the help. mjwilson (Talk/Contrib) 15:02, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could I put the js information in a page under my user page, put the ticker on my user page and have it call there for the code? mjwilson (Talk/Contrib) 21:22, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Per Page Javascript

Hello, I'm b:User:Whiteknight from en.wikibooks. I saw your per-page javascript function, and am taking it for a test-drive. Eventually, I would like to implement something like it on en.wikibooks (except it would be per-book, not per page). My current implementation of it is shown at: b:User:Whiteknight/perpage.js. I've already made a few modifications, but the funcionality is basically the same. I do have a question, the script appears to not work correctly in IE7, although it works perfectly in FF. Is this a known issue with your script, or is it an artifact of my changes? Neither javascript nor stylesheets for each page appear to be loading correctly. --Whiteknight Reply 13:43, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

IRC

Hi Matt. I was hoping you might have some advice on the IRC cloak. I am pretty sure I set it up properly and that it was working before (I am not on IRC often). Is there anything I need to do? Should I go through the process to register it again? Thanks! Jcart1534 03:28, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
