Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Quick help[edit]

Hello. I need you help. The sources used for Curaçao wins the Caribbean Cup are in Dutch language. I don't think there is any reviewer on this project who understands Dutch. So can you please translate those sources to English? Please do not use machine translation since it causes lot of errors. Please respond quickly.

Acagasty, Can I still help you? Or have you been able to translate it, meanwhile? --Livenws (talk) 20:11, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I had to disqualify myself as a reviewer, because I had to get involved with the story. It is wee hours here, but I had decided to tackle this article. The article would have failed for a number of reasons, and instead, I decided to find some English sources. I will be substituting them for the Dutch ones. Anyways, thanks.
acagastya 20:20, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any other reviewers who can handle this as soon as possible? Good night :) --Livenws (talk) 20:23, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Amsterdam related article[edit]

It lost its freshness yesterday. It was no longer new to be news. We couldn't help it. Help was on its way, but couldn't stop the clock.

acagastya Huh? Can you publish the article now? Nuams spent a lot of time on it. --Livenws (talk) 16:24, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
unfortunately, no. I understand the effort behind the article, and I thought about pinging you about the translation help. Anything after the third day isn't relatively new, and I really know that hurts. One of my articles lost freshness yesterday. If there is some development to the story, we can shift the focus of the article and that can be published.

acagastya I think this is a fairly strange regulation on EN Wikinews which I don't understand. At NL Wikinews we do not have this kind of rules. --Livenws (talk) 18:43, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
News has to be new. And we need to draw the line somewhere. For English Wikinews, it is three days. Just like nobody would buy if the BBC published French Open news now, a news channel can't. If something is not relatively new, it becomes encyclopedic, and it is suitable for Wikipedia. That's the truth. If it is not new, then it is not news. And if we are doing that, we aren't publishing news.

Sorry for breaking in on the discusssion - I admit it was a bit disappointing to see the article expire. On the other hand, I do appreciate the effort being put into quality control. I’ll have another go at it - perhaps the fact that I'm a bit more familiar with how things work now will help get me through the review process.Nuams (talk) 06:27, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nuams: it is discouraging. I know. As a reviewer, none of us wants to miss any article. Many times the real life commitments come in between. But as an author, I have lost many articles too. I hope we both could do better. By the way: "Kovind sworn as the 14th president of India"... Just in case you want something to write.

Oh! yes but this news must be spread[edit]

Good day. The blue whale news now is very famous in the internet. but this is one of the hottest news in the country of Russia as i know. This is not the same as the Wikipedia article! this is a warning news. Arepticous (talk) 04:03, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Arepticous: It should be written in the style of a news article. See PILLARS and how to WRITE an article for beginners.
acagastya PING ME! 04:51, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That is a hidden category for articles I have written. We have that sort of thing.
