A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi. The article in its current form was assessed not-ready for publication; see my review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 17:31, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This article needs some attention to its structure and focus; I tried to explain, as best I could, in my review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 01:43, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I realize there's a learning curve for news writing; it's a different thing than encyclopedic writing. There are little things we do differently, like ordering the sources from newest to oldest rather than oldest to newest, but then there is the larger organization of the article: focus and basic questions; headline, lede, and inverted pyramid. It all gets fairly easy once you get the hang of it. If you haven't yet read WN:Pillars of Wikinews writing, that might be a useful compact overview (though it's very compact so does leave out a lot of detail); at the other end of the spectrum there's our style guide, which is kept short (by the standards of style guides) so it can be read all the way through. Somewhere between is Wikinews:Writing an article. And if you have questions, do ask. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 01:58, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for revising and resubmitting promptly. I was glad I was able to get to yours when I did; we've been having trouble keeping up with the review queue these last few days. I was able to review your article again, and have written a new set of review comments. Also note the history of edits during reivew. --Pi zero (talk) 18:27, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi zero: Hi, I am resubmitting this article with changing the heading. Hope this might give me room to cover everything around D. K. Ravi's death. This issue is important for the citizens of our country. Since this is gaining its political severity, there are very few media that are reporting it unbiasedly. During the first edit itself i have eliminated the word "efficiently" which was still included in your review during the second edit. Please do consider that change in the present edit. Thank you.
Another reviewer has also done a review, I see; it's good to get perspectives from multiple reviewers.
You need to pick a particular development in the story, and starting with that as your focus, build an article around it. Choose your sources — including, at least, two mutually independent ones that corroborate the focus — and read them all before starting to write. Then write your lede, remembering to succinctly answer as many basic questions about the focus as reasonably possible, including when because you need that to establish newsworthiness; choose a headline; write further paragraphs in an inverted pyramid that provide details and background/context. Once you learn the basic elements of Wikinews writing (a starting place is WN:PILLARS, then WN:WRITE and of course WN:SG), it gets much easier; and indeed English Wikinews can to be a good vehicle for getting additional visibility for a story that the English msm hasn't been covering well. --Pi zero (talk) 12:00, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

India China and Bhutan: Diplomatic Silence[edit]

Hi. Thanks for creating India China and Bhutan: Diplomatic Silence. Unfortunately, it has been deleted as an abandoned article. Not every article succeeds; we look forward to your continued contribution to Wikinews. Wikinews' content guide and guide to writing an article are useful resources for writers. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or at the assistance page. —mikemoral (talk) 08:32, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
