Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
    [RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

 Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

No, I don't speak Portuguese (I only know that one phrase). I can speak some Spanish, though. tempodivalse 18:42, 10 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer what you were looking for? tempodivalse 21:58, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

To get it to appear at your wiki, simply create the page MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer at the Portuguese Wikinews. You don't need to edit any existing MediaWiki page to get it to show up, I don't think. Let me know if this works. Cheers, tempodivalse 03:35, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Tempo seemed to stop answering, so I hope he doesn't mind if i respond to your last question. If you look at Special:AllMessages#sp-allmessages-r1-3162 you will see the page was originally a dash here too. My guess is that the message is ignored if it is a dash. (also don't forget pt:mediawiki:sp-contributions-footer-anon as well) Bawolff 11:38, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for not answering promptly, I was called away for a while and couldn't get back to you. I think that yes, the message is ignored if it has a dash; what you need to do to get it to show up is to replace it with the content of MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer (don't forget to translate it into Portuguese). Also, all MediaWiki pages are protected by default, and can only be edited by administrators, so if you're not an administrator there, you'll have to get someone else to edit it for you. tempodivalse 13:55, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Commentary pages

[edit]

I saw your query on Tempodivalse's talk, and I'll make a start on explaining this.

en.wikinews has an extra namespace, "Comments:" this appears as a extra tab at the top of an article. This is a change to the MediaWiki configuration to add the namespace and fit it into the page tabs. User:Bawolff can possible tell you about any code to get it in the tabs, but I believe to get it as part of your wiki you need a bugzilla request to create and add the namespace.

Within an article, the {{haveyoursay}} template is automatically added as part of the page creation template. Cleverer templates to embed a HYS talking point into an article are {{HYS question left}} and {{HYS question right}}.

Hope this helps. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:12, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, the auto inclusion...
From main page source...
'''Write an article for Wikinews'''<br/>
''Please read the [[Wikinews:Writing an article|article guide]] before starting. Also check the list of [[Special:Newpages|recently created articles]] to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.<br/>
<center>
<inputbox>
type=create
preload=Template:New_page
editintro=Template:New_article_intro
width=40
</inputbox>

As you can see, the {{New page}} template is included when you create the page. On that page you'll find the {{haveyoursay}} template. You can put anything in there, so you could have new page templates for countries or topics and use them for page creation from a country or topic portal with appropriate categories or infoboxes already present. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:00, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think Vitor is talking about the little box that appears at the very bottom of every article - the page rating. I've never really paid much attention to that. I think it allows people to rate the article according to its quality: reliability, presentation, etc., but I really don't know the specifics of it. I suggest you ask about this at the water cooler, maybe the folks there can tell you more about it. Tempodivalse [talk] 19:28, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm not completely sure what you wanted me to do when you asked me to "analyse" the template. I'm assuming you wanted me to look over this and see if it is all right? If so, the template looks fine to me. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 17:24, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I've sighted the {{Softredirect/User}} template, it should now be marked as flagged, as requested. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 22:06, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've added the interwiki link, just as requested. Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 03:19, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tit for tat

[edit]

You pointed me at an article, which I've reviewed. (Note on the talk page when you've addressed those points.) I point you at Appeals court gives go-ahead to Falklands War criminal charges, which you might want to translate (or interwiki link if you already have it). Hi, Vitor. Just wanted to let you know I've answered your question on my talk page here. Sorry for the late response, I was away for a while and didn't have an opportunity to check my talk page. Cheers Tempodivalse [talk] 21:20, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
