Is there a downloadable archive?

Not in the easiest to use format - but you can also get the entire archive of Wikinews articles at http://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwikinews/20110816/ . If you're going to go the web crawling route, going through all the articles on category:Published might be easier than the archive page. Depending on your needs, using special:export or getting the pages without skin ( via action=render ) might be useful. 15:51, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Sources question

As wikinews states we should have at least 2 sources that are recent within the past 2-3 days, can we include older sources (even from a year ago) that we have used/ or quoted from as a part of background information in the news story? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by NavrahUOW (talk • contribs) 12:29, 20 August 2011

Source must verify everything in the article (excepting really obvious stuff, on the order of "Paris is in France"). So you're obliged to include older sources if you used them. See WN:Article wizard/Sources. --Pi zero (talk) 12:56, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Note, the Sources are needed for the Verification criterion of article peer review, so if there's stuff in the article that isn't in the sources, the uninvolved reviewer who reviews for publication will have to painfully figure out that certain things aren't verified, and either remove those things or fail the article. Article reviewing

What article do you have in mind? Seriously, name it. These aren't normal times. We've got an overflowing review queue, due to a university journalism class who've been assigned to write for Wikinews. Many of the queued articles probably have flaws that would prevent publication, while those articles that could pass may be overlooked amongst the throng until, worst case, they go stale and can't be published through no fault of their own.

Sometime tomorrow, if you're lucky. There's 19 articles waiting for review, there's three or four, at best, active reviewers, most people don't have the patience/time/interest to review more than a couple articles in a day. Although there's only been one or two articles publised a day for the past couple days. A lot, probably the majority, of the articles in the queue are never going to be published and will end up deleted for being stale. C628 (talk) 02:17, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How can a news site expect to receive views if the information comes out a day after the event? I'm not a reviewer, but would anyone mind if I took a look at some and left some comments here on which ones I think are good?Ryan Vesey (talk) 02:21, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We expect to receive some views because we are an international publication (unlike, say, the BBC or NYT). Also, many people don't search for the news right away, which is another reason why we expect to receive some traffic.
Articles tend to be reviewed more quickly if the author actively seeks the assistance of a reviewer. Since you have done so here, your article will likely be reviewed within 24 hours. Ragettho (talk) 03:00, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I can't review your article right now because another user had already requested that I review her article. Also, all articles must be checked by a reviewer before being passed. I don't see a problem with your posting comments on articles that should be failed. So if you spot an article with multiple issues, feel free to post your concerns on the talk page. Filter problem needs repair

The filter against the word 'poo' in articles is also triggered by the word 'poor'. For half a second I thought it was a real-time joke, but changed the word to 'bad', and the filter was alright. I suggest someone fix it, it is pretty poor.Borgmcklorg (talk) 11:38, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use images

How relevant is a normal image? Would File:Braunau am Inn.jpg or File:Austrian Police officers 01.jpg be appropriate for the article Man arrested for raping his two daughters for 41 years? For those Wikinewsies that follow tropical weather, I have started to write an article to prepare for Hurricane Irene's impact on the northeastern United States.
