Graph Assistance

Hi! I'm writing an article about a some-what recent homicide of a police officer, and I was thinking of including a graph of the rates of police homicides from 2000 to 2019 in the state of California. I have the data from the California DOJ but I'm having trouble uploading the data to Wikimedia Commons (it's over 2 MB) and turning it into a graph with the graph extension. Could I get some pointers on doing this? Thanks! Carolynknights (talk) 13:10, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the data sounds like it is public domain. If you want to use the graph as an illustration for an article, I would create the graph on your local computer and upload the graph (or a screen grab thereof) to Commons with a link to the data source. I do not see 2MB being a problem. That's a small amount of data in this day and age. Is there something I am missing or misunderstanding about this problem? Cheers, --SVTCobra 13:29, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea. I was thinking of doing the graph with the graph mediawiki extension, but making the graph on my computer would be a lot easier than learning how to wrestle with the extension.

@Carolynknights: I often use graphs for my article, and I generally use the image as compared to the extension. That is too much work for re-inventing the wheel. It saves time and moreover, we are not at the mercy of an extension breaking in the future. What is the extension of the file? If you get an error, send it via file attachment to c:COM:OTRS, and a OTRS volunteer, such as Gryllida or me can upload on your behalf.
@SVTCobra: Yes, you are mostly correct. These sort of data is not copyright eligible.
