Review of revision 4721700 [Not ready]

[edit]

@JJLiu112:, Yes, normally FT articles are, but this one is not. Are you having a different experience after clicking the link? I don't know if it is a geo-related issue. But try the archive link instead. It's fully visible there, regardless. --SVTCobra 00:30, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

They let you read three (?) free articles a month. --Heavy Water (talk) 00:36, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Did you click the link? I can't read any of their normal articles. This one is different. It is not behind the paywall. SVTCobra 00:44, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Also, it is an annoying piece with text floating and images behind. It's almost like an art experiment. However, I am quite certain it's not paywalled. SVTCobra 00:47, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's odd. It was paywalled when I opened it earlier, but now it's not. Sorry for the inconvenience. JJLiu112 (talk) 00:50, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hungarian side

[edit]

I could not find anything on the tariff changes in the Hungarian official gazette, which suggests to me that this was just an announcement. (And, as the article points out, tariffs are regulated by the EU, not the individual countries themselves.) This morning, the Ministry of Agriculture has communicated that transit through the country is still allowed.[1] (Hungarian) - Xbspiro (talk) 07:41, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

New developments

[edit]
  • Slovakia is the third country to ban imports
  • Poland now allows the transit of Ukrainian grain
  • Hungary: on April 18, at around 10 p.m. - government resolution No. 130/2023 got published in the official gazette

- Xbspiro (talk) 00:27, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Do you have the time to bring it up-to-date? I retracted the request for review. SVTCobra 02:47, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I will get to it. - Xbspiro (talk) 10:41, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Is it finished and ready for review? Cheers, SVTCobra 18:04, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would tinker with it still. I have been kind of slow to write. - Xbspiro (talk) 18:15, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SVTCobra: Finished, I think. - Xbspiro (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. You put a lot of work into this. I hope it will not be overwhelming for the reviewer. Cheers, SVTCobra 21:53, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hope not - I will be logged in on IRC for two more hours, give or take. Maybe I can help reviewing by answering questions there, if some would arise. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:13, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Pictures for consideration (fair use)

[edit]
  • [2] - the Ukrainian (left) and Hungarian (right) ministers of agriculture in a teleconference
  • [3] - the Polish Minister of Agriculture visits a border crossing point
  • [4] - Polish and Ukrainian officials announce the transit deal (close-up on the Polish side)
  • [5] media gallery of the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture (earlier pictures)

- Xbspiro (talk) 22:06, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not so sure any of these qualify for fair use. SVTCobra 22:42, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Neither am I. Except for the last one, each item shows an aspect of the ban (negotiations, border visits, announcements), and were published by the ministries or ministers to illustrate the situation (primary source). My hunch is that they would pass as publicity photos.
I have just noticed btw, that the Polish ministry uses CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 PL (see the footnote here). - Xbspiro (talk) 11:24, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Review of revision 4722352 [Not ready]

[edit]
@Heavy Water: I am surprised that Euronews wrote that, I will look into that. As far as I know, Romania did not ban imports pending that EU emergency decision, they have just floated the idea, and announced sealing containers and residue testing at the borders. As for Poland, the partial ban reversal, whereas they allow transit, is covered in our article. As for newsworthiness, the given example is "continental drift" in the policy - the four bans, to me, seem to be closely related, and stemming from the same issue, with the same consequences for the EU. - Xbspiro (talk) 23:24, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
As far as Romania, I am also surprised. I can't remember where, but I recall reading they vowed not to ban. @Heavy Water:, I'd recommend not taking the "An ongoing process is unlikely to pass muster" too literally. Everything is an ongoing story. Of course, if there are major developments that have happened between the time an article was submitted and the review, we don't want to publish something that makes Wikinews look foolish or uninformed. The reason I caution about the language in that policy is that, if strictly interpreted, we could not report on the war in Ukraine until it is finished, for example. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:43, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was using "An ongoing process" to say: it isn't focused on one specific event, but rather four bans spread across a few days. Heavy Water (talk) 23:46, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK, but we can't really know if another country joins; and we can't "wait and see". But I suppose it could have been more focused on the latest with a title update. Cheers, SVTCobra 23:55, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
The latter is what I meant by this (and the lead). Heavy Water (talk) 00:03, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Heavy Water: To me, the Romanian ban seems to be an error on Euronews' side. Unfortunately, I do not speak Romanian, so I have resorted to using Google Translate.
- the Ministry of Agriculture doesn't seem to mention it on its news site (machine translated version)
>> their article, covering an online meeting between Ukrainian and Romanian officials on April 19, doesn't seem to mention it either
- Romania Insider wrote on April 20 that a ruling party pushes for a ban: [6]
- an April 21 article of theirs wrote about container sealing and residue testing: [7]
- Al Jazeera mentions four bans on April 21: [8]
- Interfax mentions four bans on April 21: [9]
>> a factual error in this article: in the case of Hungary, they wrote that the ban started on April 18 (that's the publication date of the Hungarian government resolution)
- Radio Free Europe posted this article on April 21: Romania To Hold Off On Ukrainian Grain Ban For Now
- Reuters published this on the same day: Romania will not ban Ukrainian grain imports, awaits EU decision (through 12ft.io)
- their April 19 coverage says: "Romania is the only country of the five affected that has not enforced a ban." - [10] (through 12ft.io)
- I have not seen the ban covered by Romania-based Hungarian language media. - Xbspiro (talk) 05:46, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

A chance to refresh

[edit]

Today, an Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting will be held in Luxembourg - the bans are on the agenda. - Xbspiro (talk) 07:53, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

A deal was reached on April 28. I added some sources. Hopefully, we can get it ready and trim some of the old sources. Cheers, SVTCobra 21:36, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I "refreshed" and resubmitted but unfortunately I had to cut a lot of your work. Your research and notes were amazing work, though. Cheers, SVTCobra 00:11, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the update. An important detail, I think, is that national bans covered a much more wider range of goods than the new EU-sanctioned one. If you would like to cover that, this article sums up the original bans pretty well. - Xbspiro (talk) 12:17, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

@Heavy Water: I have added two sources to cover the dates. In the case of Hungary, the CNN article gives a wrong date. The original Hungarian ban announcement was published on the ministry's page on April 15 at 21:20 (CET). - Xbspiro (talk) 07:13, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sighted, thanks Xbspiro. Heavy Water (talk) 14:35, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
