213.178.225.230 is indeed the mail server for the mofa.gov.sy domain. But, that could readily be forged.
The origin is 'odd', it's validity depends on how these emails were allegedly obtained. 96.44.189.100 is manning1.torservers.net (some irony there methinks.

From the headers I think it being an open relay may be a coincidence. The headers say a user sent the message via Atmail webmail while using TOR, than someone downloaded it via Evolution using POP3. It looks like webmail.mofa.gov.sy was using a really old version of Atmail [9]. Atmail uses $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] to supply the X-Origin thus providing the TOR ip. The X-Evolution-Source header is kind of odd too. It would suggest the hackers downloaded the message via Evolution and copied it. AFAIK, mail sent via Atmail would not be available via POP3 (baring some oddity like a habit of copying sent mail to their inbox or a mail server that does that (GMail does, no idea about others)). It is not impossible that they would have used TOR to access their webmail in the first place, since some people do use it as a poor substitute for a vpn or it could be a sign that the hacker sent the message first than downloaded it. It is certainly possible that it is real, but it is still kind of odd. My general feeling on this is that there is a very high probability that the message was sent via mofa servers, who sent it though is very unclear --Cspurrier (talk) 00:23, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Problems during review

[edit]
  • In paragraph four, didn't find justification for "and other materials".
  • In paragraph five six, is that form the Iranian government requesting overfly of Belarus? How does one know? Just looking at it, I couldn't tell you it wasn't Belarus requesting overfly of Iran. Also, I've no idea where you get that Iran is the one worried about outsiders; for all I can tell from the email, it could just as well be Syria that's worried about outsiders. Not sure what justifies "manufacturing and", either. Possibly my difficulty could be because I haven't got the jpeg attachments to that email; I only have the pdf because a link for it is provided by the associated tweet.

--Pi zero (talk) 16:16, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • In paragraph eight, I'm failing to verify several points, including one really major one.
  • Two of the flight manifests are from July, earlier than August date in article.
  • I count only 18 flights documented by the manifests. Admittedly, 11 of them are from Syria to Russia and only 9 from Russia to Syria.
  • From the evidence of the manifests, it appears all of the cargoes were from Russia to Syria. Although many of the flights are from Syria to Moscow, the cargo listed on each manifest is CARGO FROM UUWW. In other words, the flights from Syria to Moscow were the empty planes on their way to Moscow for the express purpose of picking up cargo there.

Review of revision 1720814 [Not ready]

[edit]
Read the manifests again. Departure aerodrome: OSDI, Destination aerodrome: UUWW. Example: [11] Page 2. See departure/destination aerodrome. They were round trip flights and on each manifest it lists the cargo as bank notes 30 tons. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 02:53, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Never mind. This will likely require a complete rewrite and to be honest, I am not sure I am wanting to do that. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 03:07, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hamas being a Palestinian Group

[edit]

Hamas is the elected government of Palestine. Therefore I don't think calling it a "group" is accurate. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 17:56, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
