[edit]

Now that the popular articles template is working well (and excludes non articles, deleted articles etc), i suggest we add a list of the five most popular articles to the Main Page. An example of how this could look is at User:Anonymous101/Main Page with popular articles (I'm not sure the list is in the best place, it is just an example) . I look forward to hearing your comments on this idea. Anonymous101talk 21:02, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

/me likey. The only problem i see is that the columns are starting to become uneven. perhaps this day in history should only show one year to be shorter (which year could change every page view) example:

December 26 in 2005:

Bawolff 21:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

IMO it should show the number of hits in the last hour next to each article in the list. Cirt (talk) 22:29, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
this should be displayed once its automatically update too IMO. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 22:31, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at User:Anonymous101/Main Page with popular articles/2. It's the same but with Bawolff's suggestion. Also, I don't think we should say the number of hits as it looks untidy and they are quite low, and we don't want to advertise how low it is. Anonymous101talk 07:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have to agree with you on not displaying hits. Well not so much because they are low, but more it seems somehow unprofessional to say how many hits each article got (does that make sense). They are also somewhat misleading due to bots, spiders, etc and redirect splitting. Bawolff 07:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay good points Anonymous101 (talk · contribs) and Bawolff (talk · contribs). I think at the least there is a consensus to add the list to the Main Page, just w/out the hit stats. Cirt (talk) 08:52, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'll be bold and add it to the main page. Anonymous101talk 08:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looks good, IMO. Cirt (talk) 11:06, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Zodiac

[edit]

Anyone else see the Zodiac thing about 4:40 or so GMT? —Calebrw (talk) 04:41, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

It might have been template vandalism or something. Prodego (talk) 05:11, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good thinking. I didn't know if it was more serious than that, so I sent messages to system admins. Maybe one of them got the message and acted or someone here that know there stuff did. —Calebrw (talk) 05:13, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yea, I saw that and investigated, in case I needed to get a dev. I don't usually edit wikinews, but don't you guys have cascade protection here? Prodego (talk) 05:18, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It was template vandalism, reverted by Gnu1742 --M.L (talk) 05:15, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, thanks for that Calebrw. Where did you find that list of system administrators? Only 5 out of the 12 people you messaged are current sysadmins. Jimbo Wales, for instance, hasn't really been involved in the sysadmin side of things for a few years now. And it's not like we deal with template vandalism anyway. -- Tim Starling (talk) 05:22, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

FYI there were 3 separate edits by 2 different IPs putting this vandalism into place. All were on the same page (Which I requested to be protected for now). If you are looking for a list of admins, check WN:A --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 06:51, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
If the experiment to protect the four lead templates becomes regular practice, then I suspect we could easily enable cascade protection on the Main Page, since I can't see any templates there that would need to be unprotected. Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 12:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just wanted to keep the poll at Wikinews:Water cooler/proposals open a little while longer... :) - Cirt (talk) 12:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why is a piece of news without link?

[edit]

" August 23

CNN reports that Barack Obama has chosen Senator Joe Biden as his Vice Presidential running mate for 2008. "

contains no links at all. nor are there any further articles. this kind of content should not be allowed on the Main Page.

It's been fixed. An IP added it to the date page, and someone else tried to replace it with an article link, but all is well now. Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 00:21, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Removed "Sighted revision" from Main Page

[edit]

Just to let you know, I CSS-ed out the "Sighted revision" tag from the main page since it's protected and all edits are auto-sighted. revert if you feel different. Thunderhead 03:12, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

So long as only sighted stuff shows up on the Main Page, sounds good to me. Cirt (talk) 03:27, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

I added a link to the Current events portal at Wikipedia (Feel free to change it.) What do people think? Cirt (talk) 21:26, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I like it. Sometimes there's stuff there, that doesn't make it here. —Calebrw (talk) 19:04, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

A quick bug: On the main lead, clicking the picture takes you to the article, on 2, 3 and 4 they take you to the image. —Calebrw (talk) 19:03, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

lead article one pic not showing up?

Renames

[edit]

I've been bold and renamed two articles (the sterilization one and the Stonehenge one). Please update the main page to reflect the new names. Jade Knight (talk) 04:25, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

So we saw. We don't update the main page. It updates itself. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 04:28, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

October 3rd

[edit]

No article showing up for October 3rd. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.230.173.218 (talk) 02:56, 4 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

That would be because no articles were published on that date. --Skenmy talk 13:06, 5 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

Is there a way to list related articles just below a lead? Most news websites generally have a article with its lead and then just below that, related articles. See the BBC and other major newsites. In the past days we have had several stories on the economy and it would be great to be able to do that. Cheers --PatrickFlaherty (talk) 04:19, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

We used to have that, but it'd require a revamp of some of the templates. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:03, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dmitriy Guzner

[edit]

I was expecting to find an article on Dmitriy Guzner in Wiki News by now. Is there really nothing on this story here or have I just missed it? —Johnalexwood (talk) 12:53, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

That was from last thursday. Cirt (talk) 13:18, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

No but seriously, it was a big story for that day, on a subject that has always been of great interest to WikiNews, so how come it never found its way in here? —Johnalexwood (talk) 15:04, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'll write an article on the latest developments in the case now. Anonymous101talk 15:09, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's great Anonymous101. Well done. Since I had noticed how news stories that promote Anonymous' activities (that they want people to know about) always seemed to appear in WikiNews almost immediately, with the current story about Dmitriy Guzner not appearing until your article today (despite the story breaking on 17 Oct and it being reported everywhere else, as per the news references you give), I was beginning to think that WikiNews had become Anonymous' own news channel. —Johnalexwood (talk) 18:43, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image credit thing for all leads

[edit]

Does anyone object to me making the image on leads 2,3 and 4 link to the article and have an image credit thing like on lead one? So lead article 2 will look like Anonymous101/NLA/2. (The code is here) Anonymous101talk 08:35, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well I've added the link, feel free to remove it if you don't like it. Anonymous101talk 08:44, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Main Page content

[edit]

I'm not sure the Barack Obama article should be the lead one: perhaps an article pertaining to the Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand prank calls row incident would be better as the main article. Just my opinion, however, worth commenting on. --Coldwash006 (talk) 09:25, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eh? The prank call is now old news, and the US presidential election has been followed globally. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:29, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Shorts: November 7, 2008

[edit]

This is listed in both November 7, as it should be, and Nov. 6th, which it shouldn't. 128.163.41.211 19:59, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

thanks for the report, this has just been fixed. --MarkTalk to me 20:47, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

Since this wikiproject is about news and news change rapidly I would suggest it would be great if we have purge link on the main page. So that users can purge the page quickly to see if there is any new updated story. --Gppande (talk) 19:20, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's there, "Refresh" under Latest news. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:33, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh I got it. It is bit low and middle in page so did not catch attention. Had it been on the left side bar or on the top of the page - it would have been noticed quickly. I would use it now onwards. Thanks ! --Gppande (talk) 20:38, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be something wrong with the DPL queries in the date links on the Main Page -- I only get empty pages when clicking on them.--Eloquence (talk) 19:35, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Eloquence. The date links seem to work fine for me. (Although we don't have any published articles for December 12 yet, so none show up there, but the rest look fine). Bawolff 06:46, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually it's not that they "don't work" it is because of Mediawiki cache'ing. You have to purge the page before anything will show up. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:42, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eee Laptop

[edit]

Unfortunately, the front page is neigh-unusable when viewed on my (newly acquired) Eee laptop. Even in full-screen view, with an 800 pixel width, the columns for display become very cramped.

I understand that the site can only be expected to accommodate the most common resolutions and browsers. I don't fault you folks for expecting larger resolutions, especially in light of the newest, huge, cheap monitors. But my experience is very poor from this laptop, and I thought I'd point that out.

Keep up the good work, guys. 76.17.173.254 00:50, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Appreciate the feed back. Unfortunately there is only so much we can do. The most common screen size is 1024x768, with more and more people going to wide screen formats. I'd like to push our layout towards bigger screens, but I can't get away with that - yet. About the only way to support a screen in 800x600 or smaller is by reducing our layout to just one column. But I can offer you this one concession. I proudly present... Main Page Lite, now with 90% less junk. Let me know how that works for you. Feel free to post on my talk page. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:41, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
hmm, when i tried it last on 800x600 it just collapsed to one column (which was good enough). We should try to fix this. in my opinion, it should still be at least somewhat useable all the way down to 640x480 (yeah yeah, easier said than done). Bawolff 01:56, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Bawolff. It shrinks down quite well to about 400 pixels wide in Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari (but remains at 2 columns: so each column is about 4 words wide, quite useable in my opinion.) What browser does your Eee laptop have? --InfantGorilla (talk) 13:36, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Overhaul

[edit]

As many are beginning to notice, I'm doing a lot of tinkering on the main page. Cast your input on my talk page. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I kind of dislike that the sister projects are minimized by default, does not seem very sisterly :). --Cspurrier (talk) 22:57, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Considering Sister projects and wikinews in other lang is at the bottom, I don't think it would be bad if they were taken out of dynamic nav boxes. Bawolff 04:40, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
What about adding back developing articles (and possible disputed) back to the bottom of the main page? I think a lot of people first discovered wikinews by seeing an article needing attention, and fixing it. Bawolff 06:25, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok I did that. Comments? Feel free to revert me if you don't like it. Bawolff 06:35, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gaza death toll update

[edit]

The number has now reached 271 (BBC) and currently the main page says just over 200. --—Al Ameer son (talk) 07:44, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

well wikinews may be called weaknews for gaza strike, dozens of child targeted, hundreds of civillians are dead, yet let alone the front page, the number of news are very limited, more colloboration needed. Kasaalan (talk) 13:24, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Kasaalan. People write what they want to write, and we have less than one article per day about the conflict in Gaza. --InfantGorilla (talk) 13:32, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Main page layout

[edit]

I understand its new years so the layout has changed, but i just wanted to say i am completly lost trying to get to the correct information. I would of thought there would of been atleast a link to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas but i cant seem to find it on there. Just thought id mention it incase others are getting lost too. BritishWatcher (talk) 17:18, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats because the article we published on it is from December 27. We generally only display stuff on the main page for three days after its published. Perhaps we should have a section for ongoing events or something, as there is obviously still intrest in it. (Note, it can be reached at: Israeli air strikes hit government compounds in Gaza). Bawolff 18:16, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks yes a current events box might be useful, wasnt sure what things were removed to clear space for the New Years stuff. BritishWatcher (talk) 01:24, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

btw, i'm testing collapsing the first day on the article date list if we have no articles for it at User:Bawolff/sandbox/MainPageHeader_collapse. Comments appreciated. Bawolff 08:54, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Israeli Gaza Strike Neutrality

[edit]

"Israeli ground forces enter Gaza after a week of airstrikes against Hamas in the area."

IDF allegedly claims the strikes are only against Hamas, yet over a hundred civillians are dead including children. IDF strikes with cluster bombs which leads heavy civillian casualties especially when used over a small city where civillians live crowdedly like Gaza. IDF Strikes targets Hamas true, yet it is not obvious the target is limited to them. Another case might be more neutral. Saying airstrikes are against Hamas might be covering the heavy number of civillian deaths by IDF.

"Israeli ground forces enter Gaza after a week of airstrikes on Gaza, trading heavy fire with Hamas gunmen in the area." Israeli troops trade heavy fire with Hamas gunmen in Northern Gaza Haaretz Example Kasaalan (talk) 09:38, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Third lead?

[edit]

Could we introduce a third lead to the redesigned main page? It just seems that our original reporting isn't updated nearly as often as it should, and thus we're left with selecting only two articles as "important". -- Zanimum (talk) 21:28, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It was originally taken out over christmass time wen there was a low article count. Just revert the last edit to the main page. Bawolff 21:31, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Presidential seal at top of main page

Is there any reason why the presidential seal image is in the banner at the top of the main page? It makes the site look like it's part of whitehouse.gov. - Borofkin (talk) 03:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
