[edit]I don't see the fact that an article is a few days old as sufficient reason to worry about privacy and harassement concerns. Furthermore, my impression was that changes of articles can often occur for many days (it has only been three on that article). JoshuaZ 22:54, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Deletion
[edit]Hi, don't know if you are too busy with your article (very good article) but i am going to add many broken redirect pages to the speedy delete catergory. However they do not show up on the Admin board as the template will not include due to the redirect over ride. Would you like me to keep adding the templates for you to see the pages in the speedy delete category, leave you to find the pages on broken redirects page or leave you alone completely and annoy another admin?? Cheers--MarkieTalk 20:20, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- I have never delt with redirects before as usually someone else gets to em before I do...so I am not able to assit in that area. DragonFire1024 20:21, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for uploading Image:JohnInman.jpg. I deleted it because it is from the BBC, a competing news source. Wikipedia usually crosses the rules on images, so I would be careful about uploading images from Wikipedia. —FellowWikiNews (W) (sign here!) 17:21, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

- bbc retains all copyright on their images. Screenshot doesn't count unless the article is directly about the bbc. (example when cnn screwed up US senator Obama with Osama bin laden). Bawolff ☺☻ 00:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- note: the fair use tags (publicity screenshot logo etc) are reasons that we can ignore others copyrights. The reason it doesn't work with bbc, is we're in direct competition with them so ignoring their copyrights is unfair. (note this explanation is not technically accurate, don't rely on it for important info). Since wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a news source they have different rules then us. Your writing has become 'scary' (oops, typo, meant 'very') good. Personally, I like the ' instead of the " for use in headlines. This was debated in the WN guidelines to no avail... they are afterall only guidelines. Good work at sticking to wikinews conventions of writing a new story as developments occur. Excuse me for interjecting here. Although I have not seen much of your OR images, if it is like Image:DowHighSchool82.jpg, then I think you are fine. You may have to tag them with a Share-alike license like Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike version 2.5 also called CC BY-SA. --SVTCobra 00:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)- I retract this comment as I first thought this was a photo you had taken yourself. [edit]Please don't try and raise a rabble over the copyright issue. I think Doldrums has the right idea by reworking the page into a FAQ. Please read all of Kat Walsh's message to the mailing list, and the rationale behind the policy that comes from Eloquence.
The wikinews community is a small minority among the Wikimedia family. I'm annoyed that we'll probably lose a few articles because of image deletions. However, I'm not going nuts over it. If your images have to be deleted I'll arrange you some hosting space and you can mirror the entire articles, complete with pictures. I'm sure the board doesn't want to destroy any works, and you may have a point that this is commons imposing their world-view on the rest of the projects via the back door.
Without wikinews we'd all be forced to work on Indymedia, or similar. I've looked at that and wouldn't, it isn't the same as a wiki. So the indulgent parent (the foundation board) has said we can't use a number of licenses that they think are too restrictive. Can you upload elsewhere (eg flickr) under a license that suits and then "fair use" them over here? I don't know the answer to that, but it may be the loophole to keep what you've done. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:20, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- I use Flickr...for images I do not use in WN articles or that I don't care if they change them or not. Who issue is someone changing them. Mirrioring? Maybe...but then why bother? This is where I want my content. DragonFire1024 10:26, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks mate, I miss everyone too :), What I am curious about is whether or not any other project was consulted on this - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 07:41, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- I can understand the basis of the policy, but feel there are issues with respects to WN. The retroactive aspect causes problems as does the "minimal use of EDP" - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 07:50, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- It reads to me like the EDP is being discouraged though :S - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 08:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree totally, more or less if EDP is to be discouraged we might as well go that step further and disable uploads - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 08:10, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- If you give permission for them to be used on Wikinews and only Wikinews then I feel it should be allowed under our EDP. Even though NC and ND are not "free", they are better than using images which are completely non-free - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 08:17, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Your open letter looks good and I can understand your frustration at your own images, the problem is we all have different opinions of "free", hell my own wiki is under a CC BY-NC-SA licence - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 08:31, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- That is exactly right - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 08:39, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Pardon by Ahmadinejad
[edit]I maintain that he did use the word "pardon" and that many sources have that. I am unfortunately not qualified to do my own translation from Farsi, but here's what the BBC has him saying (emphasis mine):
"On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great prophet of Islam, and on the occasion of Easter and Passover, I would like to announce that the great nation of Iran, while it is entitled to put the British military personnel on trial, has pardoned these 15 sailors and gives their release to the people of Britain as a gift."
BTW, Jatkins and I do not have an open dispute on this. --SVTCobra 21:23, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- "Pardon" does NOT imply guilt. In the US, presidential pardon's have been given to people who were never charged with a crime. It is usually because it was expected that they would be charged soon. Iran has in fact made statements to the effect that they were going to charge the Brits with espionage. So, Ahmadinejad has pardoned them, so they won't have to face charges. --SVTCobra 10:51, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

In easy understanding american language: Fuck you!
international 11:18, 5 April 2007 (UTC) is out of here.
- An Opinion is: A view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter, A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof and it's A judgement of a person or thing.
- that applies to you as well sir.
- Please don't use american language like that on wikinews, and yes your right, that is American, as only Americans can and do use words like that; that cause offence, (in fact those words are well known only because of American movies!)
- This is ridiculous, both the extremes gone to by you and International. I would like you to think carefully about how you approach disputes on the Wiki to avoid an incident like this in the future. I'm sure I'm not the first person to tell you you're hotheaded, you're an admin and you shouldn't be up against 3RR limits because of your opinion on a story unless you're dealing with one unreasonable contributor.
- In this case you were opposing several contributors, I really do urge you to go and read the link Doldrums provided, "scare quotes" is a reference from an editors/copy-editor's handbook, and I'm sorely tempted to go buy the book. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:59, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

writing up the EDP
[edit]we can get down to defining it, after all the "it's those darn <ur favourite group of evil-doers> who're behind this" mob-forming is over.
my view of what constitutes minimal - image not by Wiki contributor, has no similar free alternative, adds value to story (eg. a stock portrait of a celebrity adds little value to a story). till now there's been little or no discussion about what modifications, if any, we shld make to our WN:EDP (though User:Uncle G has gone ahead and made some changes) so i don't know what suppport my view has among other contributors. –Doldrums(talk) 07:43, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Howdy, I saw your message on Danny's page on Wikipedia. He resigned from the board, any reason why you're expecting to get an official response from him? He doesn't work for the foundation anymore. If you didn't realize this, you might want to update your message (which, btw, was pretty transparently manipulative) - (Chairboy on Wikipedia)
- If you re-read the message I left on Danny's page...I am interested in getting this before the media does. If the authorities are involved they almost surely will get this story, and assuming it to be true, if the kid turns up dead, then they will use that to their advantage to try, in whatever way possible to discredit WP...i want to prevent that, to show that an effort was made and that the steps were taken to ensure his safety. DragonFire1024 05:31, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- WP:BEANS is the applicable text here. The media will do whatever they want, and if you check the thread on WP:AN/I, you'll see that there's been plenty of work on this already. - Chairboy
- So what are you saying? I am not following you...sorry?? Are you saying forget about it? DragonFire1024 05:39, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, first and formost, I'm saying that it's a fools errand to try and get an official Wikimedia Foundation response from Danny because he resigned from there last week. He no longer works there. He's pining for the Fjords of Wikimedia. He is an EX-foundationeer! So it doesn't make any sense. Past that, please take a moment to read the WP:BEANS essay. - (Chairboy)
- I did read it...thats where I am lost. The media will do what they want, but at least i am trying to get the real story before they screw it up. DragonFire1024 05:48, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- The media will present events like they see it anyway. There are two things going wrong here: 1) as Chairboy said, Danny can't and won't speak for the Foundation, so asking him for a 'statement' is bound to lead to confusion and 2) you're presenting this like you'll be writing the story regardless of the possible outcome. If this guy kills himself, you'd likely be giving the media more information than they'd have been able to collect for themselves - which is not necessarily a good thing. If he doesn't (which at this point is still the most likely outcome), you're putting loads of information about him in a news article: how's that going to affect the rest of his life? If you really want to discuss the possibility of Wikinews playing a role in this, contact the Foundation directly and let them decide. --Joanne (JoanneB on Wikipedia) 10:26, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I appreciate your welcome message. I actually signed up to correct a spelling mistake on an uneditable page (I can't find it now), and I misunderstood to think that once I log in, I could change this. I do my best to fix little mistakes like that on Wikipedia (my knowledge is only a subset of wikipedia, so I basically never have something to contribute other than fixing mistakes and vandalism), but I was a bit disappointed that (yet I can see why) I couldn't change this. Anyway, hopefully I can contribute one day, if I know about a newsworthy thing that isn't here yet. Your request
[edit]I've responded on the talk page of your subpage. Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 20:42, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- Trust me, I'm not wrong. :-) Projects can create an EDP, such as the fair use policy, because sometimes it is impossible to get images under a free license. But here clearly it was possible to get them. You could have chosen to place them under a free license. If you choose not to, I'll be sorry to see it, but in no way does this authorize Wikimedians to license their own images under a non-free license, because they could have chosen otherwise. It was possible for a contributor to create something free, because a contributor took the picture. Only for materials that are necessary to have and where it is not reasonably possible to use something free should any non-free media be used. Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 21:18, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

ih, by the way, what should we do for a theme song. I will try to get the rights for what I have done (it may cost some money - would wikimedia reimberse it?) but, my feeling is, we won;t get the rights.
