Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Comments
[edit]Hi! :-) To explain the move: we use the article talk page for discussing the writing of the article, and avoid creating the comments page until after publication. --Pi zero (talk) 17:02, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Pi zero: Hey... Sorry for the trouble :) Minorax (talk) 17:06, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

<p>
[edit]I notice one of the supposed-"lint" things your edits address is use of <p>
. Which is the standard means in handwritten html all over the internet, and always has been, to say "put a paragraph break here". Idk what would do the same thing without triggering this "lint" test, but removing all "unmatched" <p> tags would explicitly screw gobs of text spread all over the wiki (most commonly on talk pages). --Pi zero (talk) 01:30, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- The way to fix it is to close <p> with </p> so it doesn't appear in Special:LintErrors. But fixing it would require checking the pages the template is transcluded on so as to know where to close it. --Minorax (talk) 08:25, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- The logistical difficulty is that the meaning of <p>[...]</p> is fundamentally different from the de fact sense of singleton <p>, in that the singleton means "put a paragraph break here", whereas the matched pair means "treat all the stuff between these two points as a paragraph". So the matched pair isn't an alternative way to do the same thing, it's a way to do something quite different with only a slight resemblance. --Pi zero (talk) 12:11, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- So in simpler terms, one template opens the <p> while another closes it. I'll keep that out of the stuff I'm going to fix and might revisit this again when I'm done with the others. --Minorax (talk) 06:27, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Documentary article
[edit]Thanks for your edits to that article here. Although it still doesn't quite bring it up to snuff (and it is getting stale quite rapidly by now), it was nice to see someone jump in there trying to help. --Bddpaux (talk) 17:16, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
