Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Hi! This article wasn't ready for publication. I wrote review comments on the article collaboration page. I've also added a {{Howdy}} template at the top of this page, which has lots of stuff, starting with instructions on writing one's first article. --Pi zero (talk) 19:27, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
i may never ever try to do another story on here again becse i that people would help you complet the artical if they have more info to add or if they can help fix it up once you have submitted it not just get yelled at with boxes at top of story telling me what to do to get if fixed i get that that you what you do to tell them what wrong but some of the stuff you ask people to fix you guys could could fix then it the story be good to go
- Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Take a deep breath, brutha.....I've been where you are right now! I know, you worked hard on it......it was your baby.....and then somebody said, "Nope!" (and they said it twice!!!!!). Listen.....great first effort....I'm serious! Great effort, I mean that! A'lot better than my first effort......really! It's just an article.....it's not your child, it's not your spouse....it's just an article. You'll find a great community here.....but you have to, shall we say, 'Put the project ahead of yourself."...OK? You just changed it to "review" a little too quickly....you weren't quite there just yet! Why not jump over to the Newsroom and just clean-up a few articles being worked on? Drop in a comma here........take out a semicolon there.......that kind of stuff. Learn the "spirit of things" here first.....OK? Give me a shout if I can help! - I've disabled the helpme template because it is apparent you have 'given up'. Sorry you felt that templates highlighting areas where your article needed significant improvement were shouting; unlike Wikipedia, Wikinews does not have the luxury of an infinite time-span within which to improve articles and educate on the finer points of grammar, spelling, capitalisation and punctuation. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:05, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Welcome!
