Hey Doldrums

Thanks for the welcome. Now all I have to do is figure what the heck I need to do in this place. It's a tad confusing. Thewolfstar 12:59, 12 July 20.06 (UTC)

Newsroom

I really like it. Far superior to the current Newsroom. I haven't made up my mind yet on whether we should also abandon the Workspace and Article Collaboration. --Deprifry|+T+ 17:18, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I kinda agree on the Workspace, it has zero relevance to my work whatsoever and I frankly only visit it when I forgot how it looked like. Article Collaboration has some potential though. From time to time, people post lengthy request there, which sadly get igonored most of the time, so having them in a small box like in your draft might not work. --Deprifry|+T+ 17:56, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're now a sysop!

Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information on Wikinews:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). You might also have a look at WN:BP. Please also keep an eye on WN:ALERT. Have fun! --Chiacomo (talk) 04:20, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hullo! Thanks for the info. I've actually been around for about 8 months now, but the gap between my first and present submissions has been rather long. :) My question though - is how do you determine which story needs to get publish vs develop? Cheers Viksit 04:52, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Changes to Wikinews:Browse

Essentially, I like the changes — while they allow things to be branched out in subpages, it allows basic categories to appear on the main page. With this new design, people will have to travel through less pages. However, I'd prefer if all the text on the page was centered, as well as slightly larger. Other than that, I vouch my support. —this is messedrocker (talk) 20:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Doldrums, why are you suppressing the TRUTH?

OK. No tell me how I can correct the wild and untrue spectulation about our tape search? People are even changing the original Sydney Morning Herald article, making it even more sensational. I am using my real name, contrary to most posters who hide behind fake screen names. Can I post another article that tells the true story?

Apollo and the SSTV

Hi, I'm a Spanish editor of Wikipedia and, more recently, of Wikinews. I'm very interested in astronomy and the history of the Apollo missions to the Moon, and I've been following the controversy about the note published here on August 5 about the SSTV tapes.

I've added a notice above the Spanish version of the article, alerting about misleading content. But the editor who started the article, Tequendamia, who is a moon-hoax believer, keeps reverting my edit, even though I gave the reasons in the talk page. He deletes the notice every time I add it, and he even thought I had made up Wood's letter! I think he should be banned, but no other editor seems to be there to control his edits.

Also, I could ask for protection of the article, but I don't know if any other Spanish editor would take the time to read all the discussion - and then he could even decide to leave the article unprotected!

Could you please keep an eye on him, so that no one retires the alert notice about misleading content in the Spanish version? Of course, I could keep watch myself, but I fear I cannot do so in the next few days - I will surely be out of my city. ThinMan 15:25, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tips, Doldurms, re: the S.C. article I recently posted.

Archiving

Thanks for helping out with the archiving, I'm still trying to work out all the little things that end up getting done to articles, so you'll notice I added sorting the sources newest->oldest. I generally start reading an article, if I find a mistake I click edit and read in the edit box. It makes archiving a slow process but a good final polish before being locked in the vaults. Did you notice I lowered the age from 14 to 10 days and am following through what you've archived to see if I've missed any items from the checklist, please add anything you spot yourself. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:43, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

re: interested?

Please excuse my late reply, I must have promptly logged off yesterday after posting to PVJ59, and so I have now just read it. I think the link you sent me is interesting, and its implementation has precedent with the conditions for eligibility now placed on social welfare benefit recipients. Whether the 3 states that have so far begun adopting this approach is proper treatment for folks who are both poor, and less than healthy, is news.

I do better with writing news that has a specific event... this appears to be a U.S. bureaucratic<?> process that is unfolding. I would be amiss how to even write a lede for an article like that. Perhaps you already have, I'll check, regards. -Edbrown05 06:59, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

Thanks for supporting my accreditation request. It's just over a week old so I'm wondering if there's anything I need to do to bring it to a conclusion? I'm thinking of covering a political convention in a week's time so it would be helpful if I could arrange accreditation in the next few days.

CSS sugestion

Sorry, when I first read your sugestion I misread it. I'm not opposed to that, but theres a little problem in implementation of it. Two methods:

  1. background color:
#content {background: #EEF} //or #DDF for a stronger tinge

Problem with that is it looks strange with some templates made for a white background (could be fixed, but hard)

  1. -moz-opacity / opacity

Works great, except I didn't fix the tabs in opera properly so they cause problems (May fix that soon)

But you could put the first one in special:mypage/monobook.css and it'll work. Bawolff ☺☻ 00:52, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re:IP blocks.

We've been getting a fair bit of vandalism lately so I didn't bother to check whether or not this particular IP was static. I just went ahead and blocked it off indefinitely without giving much thought to it. Thanks. PVJ(Talk) 17:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

By the way, if this user continues vandalising, it might be helpful to contact the ISP. I'm not sure about we generally resort to that though. PVJ(Talk) 17:14, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
