Inputs-advise (18 October 2006)
Doldrums,
Thanks for the advise, I will keep the copyright issues on top of things. Im just starting here, your guide is appreciated, would like to keep the Philippines page updated a little and practicing how to contribute to WikiNews. I look forward to staying on here contributing -- unless I am on assignment. BTW I am a local journalist here reporting for a local broadcast outfit - contributes and more for a foreign news network. What's the rule if I covered the event and I am reporting it, how do I or why should I credit other news sources, maybe just for references?
Thanks.

Disputed article: Iraq (05 September)
Hi Doldrums,
I placed an edit tag on the Iraq story, removed some of the details that brianmc requested I remove, but I can't see where the facts are being disputed. Everything in the article is taken from citations. Can you please advise? - Nikishka
Hi Back at you
Welcommittee??? Ahem... I guess I'm not the only lazy typist around! Interesting user name you've got! Kudos!
Have you any idea why your common.css is doing such ugly things to the graphics over here. See Template:Interwikitmp-grp and contrast with the (intransition) W:Template:Interwikitmp-grp. It's disconcerting to say the least! The whole plan was to have a uniformly coded set of all templates... Apparently {{Interwiki class-sisterproject}}, Dang, {{Interwiki class-sisterproject}}, Dang-Dang, Template:Lts (Strike three! My, My! You folks don't have many common tools at all, at all! Try again w/brute force: template:Interwiki class-sisterproject (Whew! <g>) will need some adjustment. Drop me a note if you have any light to shed on the matter. I thin' it's time to get some sleep. Nice to meetchya! // FrankB 08:09, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Dear Doldrums/Archive3
Please sign your messages because that assists me in knowing who has left me a message. Second of all the article is NOT the same as the original text. From the moment I change something, I am no longer in copyright infrigment. I may SEEM that the text resembles the one of swissinfo too closely, but you will notice that I did administer changes so that I would no longer be infringing copyright. Once changes have been administered, the text is no longer the one it was and therefore it is liberated of copyright protection.
Thank-You,

RE: Fair Use Images
Given that they are screenshots of a news/current affairs program which was about the Bali Nine and their subsequent arrest or trial I would argue that they were fair use. What do you think? - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 21:57, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

It works (date auto-formated based on preferenses)
template:altdate/link will format the date based on your preferences and link to a page that will either be the year page (2006) or the day and month page (September 5). So far only works in September 5, 2006. but with bot help could be made to work in all dates in about 700 edits. Bawolff ☺☻ 10:10, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

There was an editorial complaint because I used much of the biographical material from the late King's listing on Wikipedia. So, I trimmed it down. This is the first time I've ever posted anything on Wikinews, so I'm rather confused on how things are done here. - Unidyne

RE: biting the newbie (Alixafar)
I'm a newbie myself, so I'd welcome advice on how I should have handled that situation. I thought I was following guidelines by correcting his mistakes. After he reverted my corrections, I thought it was appropriate to state, on the talk page, as clearly as I could, why I felt the corrections were necessary. The corrections I made -- removing bad links, fixing grammar, insisting that the opinions of both sides of the conflict be presented -- seemed like wikinews no-brainers to me. :) TRWBW 07:11, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Dynamic main page
I've used the dynamic template on a few more bits of my alt design, what do you think? It does require that Craig's bot create new Latest news pages with the collapsed part of the recent news section. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:45, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not working at my own PC today, and I've got the same version of Firefox as at home, but none of the dynamic sections seem to work (they all appear expanded without the Show/Hide tag). If I look at the bottom of this page on wikipedia it works (I get Show/Hide tags). My current guess is the problem is somewhere in the CSS, do you know anything about that, or do you know who could compare the CSS between the two sites? --Brian McNeil / talk 16:51, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for asking before deleting the page. I am maintaining Portal:Government of India which has link to Government of India. If it creates problem here, then I will have to change there. pre-archiving copyedit
You might want to look at AWB for working on the pre-archive copyedit. My only gripe is the edit control doesn't behave the same as the one in Firefox.
Once you enable a few options in it you can get it to automatically catch and fix most typos, as well as your own custom changes (I use this to get rid of the Microsoft Word quote characters).
Basic use is build a list of all articles with certain criteria (Eg eveything from Category:September 15, 2006, click start and it'll load, check and do any typo fixes and show you the diff. You can then make other changes and diff again or preview. When you save it automatically goes to the next article.
What it doesn't have is an option to protect, mainly because thats alien to the folks over on Wikipedia. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:40, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- The .NET framework is pretty big, but I already had an earlier version for some of the Real Work(TM) stuff I use. September 13 was a pretty bad day, so if you look at the articles there you'll see a lot of things I had to do as part of my poorly documented archiving process. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:36, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Corruption scandal in Poland
Hi,
Thanks for your attention and assisstance concerning the article I have started. I am completely new to Wikinews, as you can probably guess, so I have no idea how the whole thing should work, but I believe this is a very major story, so I thought it would be good if Wikinews had some coverage of it. I personally think it might be published as it is now, perhaps there isn't much detail, but on the other hand I don't think much more is needed for the casual reader. If a published article can be edited, I'd gladly add more later using Polish sources, but I guess the story is already one to two days late, so I guess there is little sense waiting.
Could you please tell me whether you believe there is more "development" needed or we can oublish it now. Thanks!
Bravada 11:02, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your welcome message and replying! I hope the article was appropriately sourced and NPOV, as I simply summarized the two English-language reports I could find. I am afraid there isn't much fruther copyediting I could do, as the article sadly reflects the pinnacle of my rudimentary English. I do hope other users will be merciful enough to brush it up. Therefore, I decided to publish it for now so that WikiNews won't be kept behind.
- Now I see the story got posted under today's date, which makes is slightly improper, as it is based on reports as of yesterday. I was hoping to post another story on the later developments of yeaterday, basing on reports published today. Oh well... *(heading off to watch the news to get an update)* Bravada 11:24, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, it's just me again. I have decided to cease my activity in the Wikimedia projects, so I've had my profile in the Wikipedia deleted. The admin who did that is not an admin in Wikinews though, so I was wondering whether you could do me a favor and delete my profile and talk page here? Thanks, Bravada 16:22, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again, thanks for your reply. My presence here was just an offshot of Wikipedia activity, which I decided to cease after long consideration. My experience with Wikinews was a lot better than with WP, and I hope this interesting project will continue to develop and grow. I am sorry to say, however, that my current time constraints would not allow me to contribute significantly anyway, so I my decision is pretty firm. While bowing goodbye, I would like to thank you for being very kind and helpful. Bravada 20:21, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

New quote for you
Thought you might like this:
This debate is occurring because of the Supreme Court's ruling that said that we must conduct ourselves under the Common Article III of the Geneva Convention. And that Common Article III says that there will be no outrages upon human dignity. It's very vague. What does that mean, "outrages upon human dignity"? That's a statement that is wide open to interpretation.

I do fully appreciate the sentiments you expressed to me in your message Doldrums, and believe the points you make do fairly represent commonly held viewpoints here. It was not my intention with this post to incite drama, but rather for me to at a minimum throw in that boot of support that I do have for Neut, and to have some community pause for thought at what is happening here. There is no question in my mind that Neut knows better. For those actions Neut undertakes anyway, irregardless of the consequences... well flaunting it is a fleeting thing. -Edbrown05 08:01, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Clearly, opposing opinions are not appreciated or acceptable on sites like this. BTW - my first edit was for two reasons...first was b/c you brow beat a weaker editor into submission when you went warring with him/her earlier...and second, I reverted your edit and included the Wikipedia link to the article specifically NAMED w:Terror Alert System to clear up the controversy. AND so I specifically did not upset your sense or start an editing war I DID NOT revert the re-directed page name. That's called a compromise in good faith where I come from. NOT UNCIVIL AND NOT VANDALISM!!!!! Please feel free to block me permanently. WN will not see any further contributions, edits, nor improvments from me. I searched the IRNA website, but could find no such story. This fact, added to the minimal nature of the article convinced me that it was a hoax. If you could find any news-source that published something of this nature, or if a more comprehensive search of the IRNA site yields results, please feel free to undelete it. The Adminstrator Alert page is for requesting action against particular users, not for expressing your sorrow at an article not being published. Also, you are supposed to warn the errant users before taking the matter to WN:ALERT. I have removed your disruptive "alert" and expect you to take it elsewhere. Thanks. - The Hezbollah source will be enough at this point. We will add the Hezbollah stand on the matter to the article and publish it. I have already mentioned this at the article's talk page.
- As for WN:ALERT, you have not warned the allegedly errant user-which you were supposed to do before requesting the intervention of Administrators.
- You have not specified which user you want blocked, and for how long. PVJ(Talk)(Articles I have written) 13:46, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

US population reaches 300 million
Thanks for your help with the story US population reaches 300 million! If you take a look at the talk page, Talk:US population reaches 300 million, someone pointed out that the article was created before but then it was deleted. I tried to checked the history of the earlier page to see if maybe I could add anything but since it was deleted I don't see any history: http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=United_States_passes_300_million_mark&action=history I noticed that you're an admin, so I was wondering if would you know if there is any way to see the deleted content of that story and may use it in the current article. It doesn't really matter if we can't, as the current story seems have enough content as it stands now. Anyway, I got to get some sleep. Again thanks for the help editing! -Hyad 07:56, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Should suffice. User in question is calling for my death. Calling for the country in which I live to be annihalated. I suppose that doesn't constitute a personal attack and is a completely normal way of discussing here on Wikinews? --Daniel575 16:37, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- It appears that this user has decide to violate WN:POINT in order to have his grievances addressed. Despite being warned to cool off for a while and stop being disruptive, Daniel has (very directly) started proclaiming his desire to annihilate India. Since this user already seems to have some problems with me (he has expressed a desire to include me in the whole India-annihilation procedue), perhaps you could take some action against him? PVJ(Talk)(Articles I have written) 16:02, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- I have warned Daniel as politely as I could, but he responds with incivil personal attacks. He seems to be a vandal, and I believe that blocking will be a better solution to this problem than a dispute resolution procedure. I should not have to put up with his insults and will consider having him blocked if he violates policy again. PVJ(Talk)(Articles I have written) 16:48, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

- Wow, the work you´ve put into that is awesome ! I'm sorry left it in a semidesolate state, but I've been kind of busy since I've returned (and to be honest, I had kind of lost my drive for it, after already having spent quite some time and energy for it). I can only say I´m very grateful that you have polished it up so remarkably :D !
- With hindsight, I guess it it might have been sensible to follow your advice (on getting a few worded opinions instead of doing a very small poll), but, as I may have stated elsewhere, the problem with that was the unwillingness of my "translator" (who went on to do a remarcable job I must say). Anyhow its been an interesting experience, and I'm very glad to see that its actually led to a nice article as well :D . I was thinking today, that if we got our act together, we could probably poll 500 or more people, by splitting it up between a number of contributers. Well, something to think about for the future anyway. Many kind regards Sean Heron 09:35, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Apologies for dramatising this a bit. Put you to trouble. Have cut it in two & added direct quotes. Is it OK to publish now? Fentonrobb 18:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I understand the rules, though they make for pretty dull headlines.
I changed the title as suggested but found the article had been deleted by someone saying "for some reason this does not appear to be news". No reason given.
Frankly I think I have just been wasting a lot of time on wikinews, trying to get things right only to be axed like this. If a cyclist can get a headline for his defence in a doping case by mentioning wiki, and if a report on the planet's condition gets binned because its not news, I wonder what it's all about? Thanks for minor clean up.Fentonrobb 12:08, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I've thought about your comment...
that you would like to have a few good reports, and not a lot of crappy ones. I think I would like a lot of crappy ones. -Edbrown05 03:48, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I failed to stay on your posted topic on my talk page, free speech, yes do refute it. You can't say what you think around here, or you will be banished... am I wrong? -Edbrown05 06:25, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Wow, you ignored me, I'm impressed. Hopefully you will also ignore my interest in stories like Ronn Moss leaves The Bold and The Beautiful. -Edbrown05 07:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Disputed Article UK - Robbers raid Swansea Bank
I quickly wrote UK - Robbers raid Swansea bank yesterday based on information that I'd received from a usually reliable source. I have been unable to find any corroboration for the incident and i now suspect that it did not actually take place. How do I delete the article? --Yaf201 07:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Hello Doldrums, I have mentioned an appropriate source which releases the news in public domain. I think here should not be any problem to make changes if the source releases information in public domain. Shyam (T/C) 09:06, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- DD is the official website of w:Government of India. According to RTI Act I suppose it is in public domain. Shyam (T/C) 09:12, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think this source is useful to make you more clear. See the slide 10 where all the details are available. I think there is no harm to use the material. Shyam (T/C) 09:42, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- How could it be known that DD News has copied the material of The Hindu. The Hindu might have copied the material of DD News. All the websites having Internet TLD .gov.in is the official website of Government of India. As previously mentioned RTI Act and source provided is not enough to use the material from that source? Thanks for voting on my RfDA. It seems likely to pass, so I have decided to leave the project. It has been great working with you, and I wish you all the best. PVJ(Talk)(Articles I have written) 09:44, 25 October 2006 (UTC) PS-No hard feelings abvout the vote.
Could you have a look at the alternate design I coded? I want to see if some people approve it so we can move it to Wikinews:Featured article candidates. Thanks, Thunderhead(talk) 03:55, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
