Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

First article

[edit]

I have reviewed and passed the article you requested me to, and I was impressed by your great prose and Wikinews style compliance in the article. I made a minor change by adding an infobox to the side (try to find one on the subject of your next article and put it as a template on the top of the page). Anyways, I hope to see you around, and keep up your good work! R.T. 11:54, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Another user has fixed it, but don't sweat it. I made my share of mistakes in my first few articles. Just keep doing what you have been and you'll get better. Happy editing! R.T. 20:34, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

infoboxes

In case you didn't see it on the water cooler - {{New Jersey infobox}} and {{Pennsylvania infobox}}. Cheers, and welcome to wikinews. Bawolff 07:24, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hallo! I see you're online today. Would you be interested in joining a writing contest that I started? We need more people to join :-). If so, drop a line at the above link. Thanks! Tempo di Valse ♪ 21:25, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

btw, per your suggestion there is now a userbox: {{user:box/tempoContest}} or {{user:box/tempoContest|<days that you stayed in contest>}} Bawolff 23:02, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh yes, and one other thing: you don't have to wait for your articles to be published in order to add them to the article log, they can be added as soon as they have been marked as ready for review. Tempo di Valse ♪ 16:26, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Exceptional Newcomer Award

[edit]
I, Tempo di Valse, hereby award Hunter Kahn the Execptional Newcomer award for writing many excellent articles in the period of only a few weeks. Tempo di Valse ♪ 18:22, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Editor status suggestion

[edit]

Would you be interested in obtaining editor status? With that tool, you'll be able to make edits to published articles without a third party having to approve them. Plus, you will be able to review articles then. If you want, you can apply for the tool here. I have no doubt you would pass without any trouble, given your experience here. Best regards, Tempo di Valse  (talk) 01:30, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

infoboxes

[edit]

On your infoboxes, you might want to clarify the FA's were at wikipedia, as there is also the similarly named WN:FA process. (which isn't quite as popular, but still is there). Bawolff 04:22, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikinews!

[edit]

Let me join in the welcoming. One tip, however, don't do "Last, First" for author names please. See WN:SG and WN:CS for more. Cheers, --SVTCobra 01:02, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry

[edit]

Sorry I never responded to your message about your first article; I just realised I never responded. I've been really busy over the last month or so and (unfortunately) I haven't had much time to edit Wikinews. Anonymous101talk 09:44, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sources

[edit]

Hello. When adding sources to articles, please use this format: *{{source|url=|title=|author=|pub=|date=}}. A clickable template appears just under the edit summary box. Also, we use dates in this format (example) date=March 29, 2009. BTW good job at writing articles and keep up the great work :) DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 17:42, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re:Not logged in edits

[edit]

No worries. If you want, I can oversight out hide the edits you made from the IP address, to protect your privacy (a whois of the IP could reveal the city and general vicinity from which you edit). Cheers, Tempo di Valse ♪ 02:06, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, I purged the IP address edits from public view, as requested. You might want to check your user page to make sure everything is there; the purge deleted anything inserted by the IP. Tempo di Valse ♪ 02:21, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yaay! Thanks much for the barnstar. Tempo di Valse ♪ 02:24, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, I missed your request you made on my talk page a few days ago -- didn't notice it somehow. Sorry. However, it looks as though Cirt (talk · contribs) has deleted the IP edits, so you should be okay. Cheers. ♪ Tempodivalse ♪ 03:44, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia User boxen

[edit]

Is there a specific benefit to Wikinews having a Wikipedia community achievement user box? - Amgine | t 02:53, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can think of several harms to Wikinews, the first and most obvious being they appear to value picayune accomplishments on wikipedia over substantive Wikinews accolades. It also strongly suggests, to me, that you have little or no commitment to the Wikinews community, while valuing that of Wikipedia. In short, they seem divisive to the community of this project. But I'm sure they are important to you. - Amgine | t 04:07, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I've written 5 articles in the past 2 hours, have something like 10,000 edits on the project, have written, oh, about a third of the current policy content for the project as well as creating or participating in pretty much every major initiative up until a couple years ago, have given up adminship in the project 3 or so times... and I don't think I'm at all committed to the project.
I don't think you can beat me in that particular pissing competition.
At the same time, I really do appreciate your content efforts at Wikinews. I think you are one of the new generation of wiki-journalists, who have great skills and knowledge and will take the project places we oldbies never thought of. But it isn't wikipedia. It isn't nice and cuddly, and it doesn't need people who need their accomplishments somewhere else to make themselves feel confident. It does need people who have vision and dedication, but doesn't need people who are prickly and quick to offense.
Best regards, Amgine | t 05:44, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Amgine = me. - Amgine | t 14:00, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

New userboxes

[edit]

Nice initiative creating the new userboxes, I think they're great!

I made two more that are more type-specific to this project locally as opposed to Wikipedia: {{User Wikinews FA}} and {{User Barnstaraward}} (for work done on this project). Cheers, Cirt (talk) 20:50, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

3rd place

Congrats, you've won third place in the writing contest, having lasted for 14 days. (The contest isn't over yet, but only two people are left in the race, so third place has already been decided). I hope you'll still continue to contribute your excellent articles. Best, Tempodivalse [☎] 00:47, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, you only submitted one article for April 3rd, and the rules say you can be granted up to three non-consecutive "free passes" if you write at least two articles the day before, so technically, that counts as being out. However, if I didn't make that clear in the rules due to phrasing it poorly, and you misunderstood, you're certainly welcome back into the contest. ♪ Tempodivalse ♪ 14:04, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I'm glad you had fun. Have a nice weekend. Cheers, ♪ Tempodivalse ♪ 14:19, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

On second thought, why don't you take second place. The contest is over, and technically I won, but it might seem like a conflict of interest for me to win my own contest, so I decided to upgrade the other two top finishers and disqualify myself. Plus, I have too many barnstars already, and don't really feel right giving one to myself. So, you can take second place instead. So here's the new star:

2nd Place in Tempodivalse's 2009 Writing Contest
