Archive 1
[edit]Good stuff :) Dan100 (Talk) 22:18, 10 May 2005 (UTC)
Hi, welcome:)) its important to read the
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Policies_and_guidelines
I have also been banned in the past so email me in the "email this user" link on my user page if it happens again.
In the meantime; happy writing. Paulrevere2005 00:11, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
FF logo
[edit]Is not GPL, according to their website: http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/. Be cautious about repeat uploads of non-free images at commons; Wikinews would like to maintain a good relationship with the contributors there since we are required to use them as a repository. - Amgine/talk 00:59, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, the MPL does not appear to work with commons, primarily because of the Trademark and derivation restriction I believe. - Amgine/talk 01:15, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- <nod> I understand that, however Commons requires that images be available under a free license which allows derivation - that people can edit it, or include it in some other image - which the mpl does not allow. - Amgine/talk 01:19, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- No, you don't have to remove it. But I'm trying to explain why it will likely be deleted from commons when they find it again. I don't want you to get upset about it. Personally, we should be able to use it on Wikinews, but we have to use commons at the moment, so... - Amgine/talk 01:22, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Nah, just let it lie for now. I'm looking for other image possibilities... - Amgine/talk 01:29, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
Soviet Rocket
[edit]I think the link you sent me is a mirror of the source I added to the story. Your linkThe Times <--> story source added so its 2 sources for an undercover reporter story from not super well known sources. hmmm -Edbrown05 06:09, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- I mean to say the TimesOnline and MosNews is not that very well known to me. Do you believe it credible? -Edbrown05 06:20, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- The TimesOnline is the website of the British newspaper The Times, which is pretty much 100% accurate. Can't comment on MosNews. Dan100 (Talk) 07:05, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
The leukemia story
[edit]Is not ready for lead article. I will be removing from the archive page as well... It is single sourced, and makes a number of unverified statements. Will speak more on this on the article talk page. - Amgine/talk 01:12, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to be delayed, but I'm in a meeting... will continue shortly I hope. - Amgine/talk 02:38, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- No, the meeting is on IRC, and it's over now. I'm finding some more sources for this. - Amgine/talk 03:00, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
Leukemia article
[edit]OK, it would be stupid if we didn't make exceptions for people who are new here. However, there's two things we can never do - copy other articles (even if it is just copying some sentences, not all of it), and not presenting a neutral point of view. For a reallly straight guide to what we do do, have a look at Wikinews:What Wikinews is. We tend to only publish articles which are on events (rather than events not happening), and also only on stuff that's happened in the last few days. (Imagine if we tried to cover all the stories we've missed in the last six months - it would be mad!)
But, because I'm willing to bet you didn't know that, we might as well now run your article. There's only two things we need to do - re-write it entirely in your own words, and also present a NPOV (ie both sides of the story). For the second part, we need to include both sides of the story - for example, that the Cancer Incidence Program says the rate is normal, and things such as there's no link between pesticides and cancer in humans (which is true, it's something I studied at uni). Dan100 (Talk) 20:25, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- What happened with this article? I thought it had been re-written to avoid the copyvio problems and "published". Was I mistaken? I see that Dan100 deleted it today as a copyvio. DoubleBlue (Talk) 01:10, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, it had been listed for the required three days but without votes for or against deletion. DoubleBlue (Talk) 01:19, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
Audio Wikinews
[edit]Hey, I left you a message under Volunteers on the Audio Wikinews page. Thanks for your interest, we can use all the help we can get (we've been a little slow on releases lately)! --Mrmiscellanious 03:23, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
2 lead stories on Uzbecks ?
[edit]Maybe 1 is better. Please adjust. Thank you, Paulrevere2005 22:37, 15 May 2005 (UTC) Great Paulrevere2005 01:49, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
Aaaargh! Please don't do that! You've stopped the real article from being renamed into place by doing that. Next time, use a redirect if you really must have a title in the main article namespace, or simply ask the user xemself to rename the article out of xyr user space. Please mark your article with a {{delete}} tag so that the real article can be renamed. Uncle G 03:07, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
You've done it again! Please read the help page that I linked to above. I've marked both articles for deletion so that this can be done properly. Uncle G 13:52, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
Audio Wikinews: Full Report
[edit]Great job on your first release! Keep 'em coming! --Mrmiscellanious 20:37, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
Audio Wiki News - Shoutcast Server
[edit]I can provide a shotcast server for the audio wikinews if you need it, i am not 100% sure of your system now but witht he shoutcast server it is a live stream....anyone can listen to in playyer embedded into a webpage or something like winamp, windows media player, real one player, ect, shoot a message over to my talk page and let me know if you are interested, thanks.--Ryan524 22:20, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
- Well after talking in the IRC room it seems your system isn't exactly what i had in mind, yours is more short clips, a news brief almost, wich i could use for my idea of streaming content, like a news network would have.--Ryan524 22:57, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Hi,
this image contains no copyright information. Is it a publicity photo? If so, from where? Please add the relevant information or the image will have to be deleted (see Wikinews:Fair use).--Eloquence 03:01, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
Guess what you've earned?
[edit]Congratulations, you've earned it! And thanks for cleaning up the hoia. - Amgine/talk 18:47, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
--Ryan524 06:32, 27 May 2005 (UTC)i understand what you were trying to do by editing that user page, but that is vandalism, i am surprised that you would fall the the vandals level. I am not joking, i hate vandals they are a waste of everones time, tha sysop who blockes them, the user who reverts it, and thats what you did by editing someone elses user page. Next time think before you act.--Ryan524 06:32, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Adminship
[edit]I'm really not the person to vote for admins, because I never pay enough attention. Why do you need to rally support anyway? -- Redge (Talk) 18:42, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Nomination Support
[edit]Thankyou for supporting me for adminship NGerda, I appricate your vote.--Ryan524 19:00, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Vandel
[edit]You've had an awful morning with vandelism... i've deleted those pictures and banned the user, unfortunately its several hours since the attack. Thanks for trying to keep him at bay. → CGorman (Talk) 09:32, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]so thats it? you give up, the only way the way things work will be changed is if someone proposes change, you don't agree, don't give up, propose change, i dobut any user will go against such a proposal.--Ryan524 04:24, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- This is something bigger than a simple proposal. People need to figure this out for themselves. NGerda 04:33, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)
- ok if you say so, nice knowing ya.you are taking this way too personally, the fact is i took me 5 months before i became an admin, it takes time, more than one month, the system may not be perfect, but heck neither is your attitude. If it were me, i'd be so mad, i wouldn't quit, i'd do something about it.--Ryan524 04:30, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not "quitting", I'm taking a break. NGerda 04:33, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)
- You call it what you want, geez i learned something to day tho, i am a bad judge of charecter, i'd never thought you'd quit, especially over something so trivial. I don't know if in the future i could re-nominate or even support a previous quitter, sorry.--Ryan524 04:36, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, if my only true friend on Wikinews says that, then I might as well leave altogether. I was going to come back you know. NGerda 04:39, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)
- ok, talking to you dosen't work, even if i try to joke, sorry i really didn't mean that, but you are being stuborn, its just not ganna be the same without you.--Ryan524 04:41, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I never said I was going to leave. Actually, I just decided to come back fully. I'm back! I was just kidding all along! <LAUGHS INSANELY LOUD>. Lets catch us some vandals! NGerda 04:43, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Please just relax, NGerda, and don't be salty/spiteful. You can't always get what you want. We all appreciate your contributions and would like you to stay. Your work is important to the efforts of WikiNews. Kevin Baastalk 04:45, 2005 Jun 3 (UTC)
- interesting point to have an edit conflict. welcome back. :) Kevin Baastalk 04:46, 2005 Jun 3 (UTC)

- For once, we agree. I don't want to be an admin. [User:NGerda|NGerda]] 04:52, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

- I didn't even realize the admin vote was on. I just voted in support of your nomination. I do think it would be important for you to become an administrator. Paulrevere2005 11:34, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Admin status granted
[edit]Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.
Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun!--Eloquence 21:04, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Congrats NGerda, vandals won't be able to vandalize long now with both of us as admins.--Ryan524 23:10, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ryan. And get your butt on IRC! NGerda 23:11, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)
Audio
[edit]I listen to Amgine's broadcasts a while back, but had'nt checked the audio section out since then; until now. I must say its very impressive and your studio looks so professional ;). I would like to see a link on the main page soon saying Listen to todays news (00:00UTC), because the effort you are putting in deserves to be listened to! Keep up the unbelieveably good work. → CGorman (Talk) 22:19, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Oh I almost forgot ->->->-> → CGorman (Talk) 22:22, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, CGorman! There is a link in the FrontPageMenu, but I agree, it does need to be more prominent. I'll see what I can work out. :) NGerda 23:07, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)
Sweet
[edit]I don't think you realised it at the time, but you posting something to my blank user page fixed it :-). I deleted it again, but this time the restore brought back all 515 existing edits, not just that sodding redirect! Dan100 (Talk) 07:54, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
your contributions
[edit]I know you may care to crucify me for these comments.
While I admire your zeal, the whole world after taking in news stories takes a more considered opinion of events than your or my humble views. So what does that mean for you, me, or anybody else that writes/edits for wikinews?
For me it means that other's views will take pot shots at anything I do and for you it means the same. Does that mean don't write? I wonder (I really don't think it does mean don't write)...
which is exactly why I suggested you don't want to be an admin. It detracts from writing. To me the admin stuff is tantamount to babysitting. -Edbrown05 02:38, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]What is the meaning of that? It should be reported. -Edbrown05 22:55, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

IRC
[edit]howcome you are nebver on IRC anymore?--Ryan524 17:53, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'm still in San Francisco, and I'm using a cruddy old computer that can't load IRC. I'll be back tomorrow. NGerda 00:40, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
Dude!
[edit]I'm not really back... I'm on the boat. <grin> Why Hayward? and I'll see if I can find the link to the presentation... - Amgine/talk 05:00, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, yes... the announcement of the Intel chip plan? did that get covered on WN? - Amgine/talk 05:05, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Ah, the main page layout... <hmms> Have you looked at Redge's layouts yet? - Amgine/talk 05:17, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The main western news cycle tends to oscillate between fixation on celebrities, high profile crimes, and actual important news events. Which will be on top depends less on news value and more on what is happening in politics: the more frivolous the news reporting and hyper the frenzy the more likely that something serious is happening under the radar in national or international politics. (says the extreme cynic) - Amgine/talk 05:22, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- And it's partly our job to balance it back out and give impportaint news events higher priority than Britney Spears getting pregenant. :) NGerda 05:25, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
I personally like this design.--Ryan524 05:23, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Rwanda
[edit]Have y'all been following this: Rwanda newshut? In my opinion, the purpose of all of the "recycling" of news, for which we are regularly criticised, is to create a news site and a news community that can support local projects like this. I'm trying to give them a little support. - Borofkin 05:22, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'm totally with you :) NGerda 05:26, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
