Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Chile Earthquake

[edit]

Hi. I found it wasn't ready for publication. Tried to provide the best feedback I could, tailored to the situation. Review comments. Alas, that you caught me about to turn in for the night (time was I could review all night if necessary, but I'm mostly not up to that anymore). --Pi zero (talk) 03:50, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: Thank you for your help. This is my first time using Wikinews and I attempted too big of a story this time. I'd like to become a regular contributor here. Thanks for all of your help! --Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:00, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Okay. It is a challenging subject, yes.
You may (if you've not already found it) find WN:Pillars of Wikinews writing useful as a compact overview of the project. Then, a great resource (imho) for first-time writers is WN:Writing an article. --Pi zero (talk) 11:01, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

User page

[edit]

Do you want me to delete your user page so your meta user page shows? SVTCobra 22:46, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

That would be much appreciate @SVTCobra! Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:47, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Huggle

[edit]

Wikinews does not have some of the templates you tried to invoke on this page. Perhaps we should? SVTCobra 20:00, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think we should. I can work on creating them. Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:01, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@SVTCobra is that okay with you? Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:02, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't mind. I presume they are used on a great variety of projects. SVTCobra 20:04, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
They are, the content may vary from project to project but I'll look through the different options as far as types of reverts on wiki news go that huggle supports and get to work on creating them. I will let you know when I have them created. Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:05, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
How does this look @SVTCobra?
Information icon Hello, I'm Minorax. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. You can read about how to contribute to Wikinews at the help pages. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Water Cooler. Thanks. ~~~~
Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:24, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looks fine. Perhaps link to the WN:Water cooler/Assistance subpage. Anyone with Huggle will automatically generate this when they use Huggle to revert a non-constructive edit? SVTCobra 20:35, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I believe so. Let me read through the documentation on enwiki. Huggle uses a tiered system of warnings. So you get the first level and then a second and so on. On enwiki, it's up to four warnings, and then the account gets sent to enwiki's equivalent to WN:AAA. Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:38, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wish I could help, but I've only ever used Twinkle. SVTCobra 20:41, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's okay! Thanks for letting me know. I had meant to create the various warning templates the other day because I noticed they were non-existent on wikinews! I'm trying my best to start working on the smaller wikis <3. I think the warnings are set somewhere in the project configuration according to mw:Manual:Huggle/Deploying but let me do a closer read just to be sure!
I did change it to link to the assistance page on the water cooler :) Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:48, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@SVTCobra It appears I need to go ahead and make uw-2 as well per this edit. Philipnelson99 (talk) 03:29, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
We also do not have {{Shared IP advice}}. SVTCobra 03:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will work on that! I've stepped away from my desk for the day but I'll work on it tomorrow if I have time! Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:19, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
