Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Dispute

[edit]

In regards to this. I'm trying to cool everyone's jets. I'm sorry you were upset by this language. Next time I think you might want to phrase your requests a little better, like "Hey, could you cool it a bit on the swearing? Thanks". We are a very loose wiki, more social, and not constricted by Wikipedia's way. Though we might be sister projects, things a VERY different around here. That being said, you're request is over the top. You're claiming bullying and violence? I don't even have a clue how you got that, and frankly I don't want to know. Also, you skipped steps 1-4 on the Resolution instructions. So, I've warned BRS and Mico to chill out and quite antagonizing you. For you, try to stay away from them for a while (Step 1) and try to be a little more chill yourself when people aren't meeting your standards. If you have any problems in the future, feels free to post a message on my talk page. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 03:08, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I saw this post, thought I'd pop in and make a comment if I may. I see you appear to be active on Wikipedia. As Shaka has said above, we're quite different, in terms of community, from that project; I've noticed Wikinews is much more lenient towards use of profanity than Wikipedia is. On the latter, that would most likely warrant a block; on the former, possibly a warning if the swearing was directed at a specific person, but not much more than that. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.
That being said, I feel Blood Red Sandman's comments were rather inappropriate; they digressed from the topic at hand at didn't contribute to constructive discussion. I can understand your being upset at him and user:Microchip08. But please, try to be a little more calm in the future. In my experience, BRS has been overall a good, constructive user; remember that some people have bad days occasionally.
And please don't let this discourage you from contributing to the project. If you have any difficulties in the future, please don't hesitate to ask for help at my talk page, I'll try my best to help out. Tempodivalse [talk] 03:45, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Ok. Wow.... This is just a spectacular train wreck. Did you ever stop to even consider posting a reply to my talk page asking me WHY I did what I did? Or maybe asking me for further input? I put in that I was more willing to work with you? So far you've skipped anything remotely resembling any procedures. I left you a "lengthy" reply and BRS only two sentences because I felt that BRS would understand what I was trying to communicate. There was no sense in me writing "Hey, shut the foxtrot up" six times. You on the other hand obviously need some help and introduction to things around here. I was trying to help you. I did not "contest" your request, I felt it was, as I said, over the top. I'm sorry, but you've made 6 main space edits and you've been here for 2 days. This isn't some long running dispute on wiki that you can't solve by normal means... this is one incident.
  • Additionally you say that this incident turned "into a very clear and hostile personal and sexist attack." Where? Antagonistic - yes, impolite - yes, Attack - I'll give you something on those lines. Sexist? Come on, until you posted that you were female, I had no idea. Your gender isn't on your userpage here (which you don't have) and it isn't on your Wikipedia userpage (which I now just went to check). As for "Anyone in a position of authority who acts so recklessly should be terminated." Admin's aren't an "authority" per say, as they are trusted with tools. We don't "terminate" people, we may remove their sysop bit, yes, but they have to screw up fairly badly. This is one MINOR incident. I'm sorry if you feel slighted by that. I don't mean to belittle your issue in anyway but there were 4 posts, including yours.
  • I don't think I can stress it enough, but this should be a minor issue but you've blown it WAY out of proportion. I'm still willing to help you, but you've gotta chill out too. There is swearing here, I'd like to do so myself. But, you've shown that you do not appreciate the language so I'm heading your wishes and not talking like I normally do. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 07:09, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Recent happenings

[edit]

Since because I don't feel like beating arround the bush, I'm just going to speak my mind on the issues

  • You're over the line here.
  • Well BRS's comment may have been somewhat inapropriate given the context, your comment preceeding it could also easily be seen as a bit over the top.
  • A general lack of good faith (on your part) is at the very least equal to anything BRS has done.
  • Your alienting a lot of people at the moment (Mostly from over-reacting). Alienating people is not a good thing to do if you want people to agree with you.
  • You need to accept that even if BRS did something wrong, your certainly not perfect either. If you don't even try to resolve the dispute before going to arbcom, you're not going to get anywhere. Nobody is perfect. Try to remember to see the things that you do, when looking at the actions of other people. Well you are claiming to be attacked by BRS, remember that your allegations could also be seen as an attack on BRS.

Thats more or less my unsolicited thoughts on this at the moment. They are meant as advice, take it or leave it. But be careful about the current strategy you are taking, it doesn't look like it will be succesful one (imho) Bawolff 08:40, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

My Wall

[edit]

Although people are entitled to their opinions, your posts on my wall will not discourage me from pursuing what I consider a completely valid response to an attempt to antagonize and attack me; nor will I entertain this with persons not involved. 08:59, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't speak Spanish, so I can't review the article. I'm not sure if it should be published, though. Wait for somebody else to review it. If it passes the review the article will be published. If the article does not pass review, do not publish it. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 10:38, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Somebody's already created an article about this earthquake. I've placed it back into the developing category because it's not ready for publishing at the moment. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 10:47, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

8.8 magnitude earthquake hits Chile. I think that's the article you might be looking for. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 10:52, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Very good. Just remember that this is breaking news, so don't take too long to write up the article. And please do not violate copyright. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 11:00, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

2010 Chile earthquake

[edit]

I do appreciate that this earthquake is awful - I can tell just by watching the BBC News Channel - but please do not use words like "terrible" or "tragic" in the article. I'm not sure about the word "awesome" either. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 11:15, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tit-for-tat

[edit]

Here's what I don't understand: You satrted out with all this, but don't like the responses. Your article demonstrates two things; you aren't stupid and you aren't here to waste people's time. It's a good, well-written piece.

Whilst I was rather dismissive of your comments, I gave them a reasonable address. I just don't see any reason it could work. I used a solitary expletive, and unless article leads can be offended by suggestions they engage in sexual activity it didn't offend anybody and was not in and of itself aimed at anyone.

In response, you suggested I was a murderous maniac, that I should be on medication, that I suffered from small man syndrome (yet somehow using cunt as an example of a strong expletive, without aiming it anywhere, is sexist!) and that I should shut it. Now, I'm quite up for that kind of tit-for-tat if you want to start it, and accordingly I responded in kind. I didn't have any real problem with you doing so, and that was where the invicivility started. Fine by me.

So... Why is there suddenly a problem? Do you honestly believe that all use of swear words is violent and bullying, regardless of context?

Or, better yet, are you prepared to deal with me that this is an absurd conflict bourne from a single word and us both draw a line under it? Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 17:17, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have made no threats and placed nothing in your mouth. FWIW, I've published yur article. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 18:20, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

(Originally posted on User:Blood Red Sandman user page.) Response to your recent comments:

  • You used that word; never mind that you set out to antagonize someone new to WN, that was just petty. I also could have lived with the other colorful language for the same reason; petty. However, a combination of these made it difficult and I proceeded to address it in a manner parallel to the offense and which follows protocol.
  • Ultimately, the issue is: Are you the type of person that will allow this behavior to continue and do you understand what it means to be on the receiving end of it? The problem is, I think the answer to the latter part of that question is yes and consider it the very reason you did it in the first place.
  • You should know a handful of your WN peers have your back and I'm pretty sure I've made some "Wikinemies" from what was nothing more than an intention to contribute a proposal at the watercooler. People are calling me a terrorist (via a headline no less), amongst other things; not to mention WN is now plagued with that word; as is my discussion page. I have not entertained the hazing or exposed myself to reading offensive material that took others time to write. You are not helping the issue and only contributing to a hazmat area.
  • Wiki is a foundation open to everyone, that receives funding from donations and is meant to embrace and enhance the world. It is not a private club made up of exclusive members with organized underground network of rules.
  • I would appreciate if from here forth, every communication between us regarding this issue be through higher means; or not, just don't be surprised if you do not receive any response. --Soy Rebelde (talk) 19:12, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • I did not originally set out to antagonise you; the first antagomising was by you when you objected to the initial profanity. I'm still willing to avoid being Wikinemies with you if you can accept that there was no initial attempt to belittle you. Regardless; petty does indeed sum up the situation - which was the whole point of me initially coming to this talk page; I was trying to understand and, eventually, reach some kind of agreement to move on. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 22:27, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry Soy, it takes more than that to make Wikinemies out of Wikinewies:P. Heck, on a good day in IRC we're as rude to each other as you and Blood Red Sandman claim each other have been in your dispute. We're usually a bit more civil on wiki, but sometimes the "push the news out nownownow" attitude spills over;). Gopher65talk 01:59, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Irregardless

[edit]

Hi Soy Rebelde, Thanks for posting the link to Merriam-Webster. Though, I must say, the argument that there is such a word is a thin one, as the dictionary itself says to use "regardless" and that the non-standard word is a long way from general acceptance and has a bad reputation ... but I digress. While you may have found my post to be mocking (I won't address the WP policy on hazing as this is not WP), I did not intend to mock. Rather, I intended to elicit some thought about language and what we choose to offend us. And I mean that ... everyone has something that they think is offensive. It is better to not get hung up on any of that sh*t, at least not if participating in the global Wikis. Cheers,--SVTCobra 02:07, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
