Language templates[edit]

Hi, Stevenfruitsmaak! Yesterday, I started a new attempt of translating an article from the German wikinews into English. Brian McNeill created a new template for translations (Template:Translated Wikinews) and also visited me on my talk page telling me that you had used some kind of language templates for your articles. What I've found out myself so far is the existence of the template Languageicon. (Unfortunately, I could not figure out what the difference between the two parameters would be.) He also told me that there was probably some documentation for these (and maybe others?). So, once you are having a break from your wikinews holidays, it would be nice if you gave me a short answer as to where more information can be found. Thanks. --Angela H. 21:10, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I left a small note to you on my talk page. ;-) --Angela H. 23:22, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio[edit]

While policy is normally to give a longer time frame, it's clear that his contributions are substantially copyright violations. They can be rewritten even after deletion. Ral315 (talk) 01:11, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is also worth noting that our Speedy deletion guidelines allow for obvious copyright violations to be deleted on sight --Cspurrier 01:27, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

India Daily[edit]

India Daily is directly sponsored by the Indian Government, so I don't understand how its fake... unless it is not? I am having trouble finding more sources because not many people (big newspapers) publish this type of stuff.

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=massive+particle+collider&btnG=Search+News ... will this work? Nima Baghaei 18:33, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
but they have only 1 article, and that is india daily ... ok why would google publish this if it was not reasonable? this in my opinion, shows how realistic this is. If google will do it, (yahoo did it to if u want the link), then so can wikinews ... Nima Baghaei 18:38, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ah ... well how do i put back up the welcome message ... also yahoo news has the same link in their news ... if google and yahoo will do it, why not wikinews! Nima Baghaei 18:41, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Using these setting on google news I found some stories mainly talking about the Large Hadron Collider at CERN... the background is probably that they are trying to recreate the big bang at CERN. But I doubt that if the experiment is succesful, i.e. if the Big Bang can be produced with a Particle Collider, that it necessarily means Extraterrestrials from Hyperspace are the ones doing it 15 billion years ago...--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:47, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But that is why i have the question mark at the end of the article I put up ... to leave people thinking neutral ... look i dont get it, if google and yahoo news will put a direct link to the article, why cant wikinews! google news and yahoo news will not publish lies in order to maintain viewers, thats illegal.
Yahoo sources to the same site and same article! Nima Baghaei 18:52, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yahoo news: http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?p=Extraterrestrial+Particle&fr2=sp-top&ei=UTF-8&x=wrt .... no i dont want to change the title because that is not what the article is about (:OP ... it is about ET creating the universe, not about us trying to create it (:O)\\
I think the question mark is perfet (:O) ... I have broken no rules, once again (b/c i feel this is being ignored) if google news and yahoo news will publish it by providing a link, then wikinews can to Nima Baghaei 19:21, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But they will not publish a lie like this, about ET creating the universe? They take these things seriously, and so should Wikinews! Nima Baghaei 19:28, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But where can I get more! most major news groups probably wont publish it b/c they have their strings pulled, but wiki should be much more open! where can i find more on this! *sigh* Nima Baghaei 19:30, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: I'd appreciate your feedback...[edit]

Good job on the Audio! I recomend that you do some more for Wikinews, if you want. FellowWikiNews (W) 20:45, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not too bad at all on the audio, if you go through the archives of spoken Wikinews you'll find I read a few articles at one time.
The summary flowed quite nicely, but Shiite is pronounced "She height" (without the H) ;-). If you can find someone to act as an audience while you record you'll find that it becomes a lot easier to have a natural delivery. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:55, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Main page experiments test redesigns etc[edit]

I hope you don't mind, but I've removed the categories portal and no publish from the main page test in your user-space. Main page tests shouldn't be listed in category:Portal. I have included category:Sandbox as main page redesigns/tests are commonlly listed there. Bawolff 17:05, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

People keep attacking me new posting![edit]

http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/UFO_Spotted_in_Istanbul%2C_Turkey

People keep attacking this post I made! I cannot make it any longer then it is because the information provided by the news agency was very minimal! Can you please help me protect it or lock it so others cant touch it! I had someone vandalize it earlier today, with some bad words...

Audio[edit]

Excatly what I've been trying to do lately. Ever since Gumboyaya left, the project has been dead, no one person has the time and effort daily to record an episode. I guess we can make a monthly calendar, but assigning days that one person does it doesn't seem very "wiki", which I'm trying to bring more into the project (by moving RSS over, asking the community to help out with scripts, and really opening the whole thing to more community involvement). I can't, and you can't be doing this every day. If a community is behind the project, one day with someone missing is no big problem, another person and quickly take up the duties. But without the community, its dead-air, and really makes the project seem "bad". terinjokes | Talk | Come visit the WikiBistro 03:23, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No first I need to learn how to use Audicity. Previously I'd used Apple's Garageband, however it *coughs* is no longer included with my mac. The recording from yesterday was recorded using my computers internal mic (I'm still on vacation!), but my bigger question remains "How did you add the music to it?" terinjokes | Talk | Come visit the WikiBistro 15:25, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

copyright[edit]

Dear Stevenfruitsmaak

as i have explained to many,

this is not a simple copyright violation. I source most of my articles directly from the Australian Assosiated Press. As my office pays for a subscriptoion to this website, the AAP supplies a feed of the ;latest stories. These are usually written by reuters or the AAP because of the nature of services such as this, these articles are bound to be found on other sites Symode09 23:20, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I shall stop inserting these comments. if my newspaper pays for a subscriptioni, they can use in in any way they deem reasonable. that means, the story can be used anywhere for anyone. The newspaper takes credit for many stories supplied for them. If you read up on it, you shall se this is a legal and common practise. wikinews is no different
Symode09 23:24, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
yes they do rtain copyright stories however when the newspaper retains the story, they can use it in ANY way they think is reasonable. next time I am on I shall quote the applicable pages
for example, reuters supply stories to other services such as the aap and newspapers. the aap then sells stories to other services and newspapers. this cycle goes on. by the end there might even be 8 or 9 authors!
My newspaper can do what the AAP do and circulate these stories for money or, free of charge.
Symode09 23:30, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am compatible with wikinews - I can claim this story is mine as long as my newspaper is paying for this story. Myself along with hundreds of other journalists do this and above all - it is legal!

Symode09 23:32, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i shall be going now. Please understand and feel free to add any other arguements. I shall speak to my companies lawyers, (they are here now) I will do whatever thwy reccomed. I will show them ALL the pages of debates, my sources and my stories. Thanks

Symode09 23:37, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do that!
I won't add anymore stories like that (you guys are giving me a headache lol) but i'll be in contact with you.
thanx

Pretty good brief[edit]

The brief was pretty slick, the only words you seemed to fluff were "impropriety" and "noose" (the latter which should ryhme with "moose"). --Brian McNeil / talk 17:04, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Better yet... "noose" should rhyme with "huis". ;-) Wish I'd thought of that one earlier. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

copyright[edit]

I have spoken to my company lawyers and they essentially said that it was alright to publish stories as long as the company is paying a subscription however, to play it safe and to comply with some other overseas laws, the story should still be credited to the origional Journalist

thanks

Symode09 00:57, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hello I' am a new user on Wikinews, and I was wondering are you allowed to put stories onto this site, from offcial newspapers without getting into any form of copyright or licensing? The Mackem journalist

No seriously, I think we should get over the whole copyright thing, it is two difficult to be involved in this debate everythime I insert a story so, I shall just write it, it shouldn't be to hard

thanks anyway, it is mainly my fault I should have just given up because it is not worth it

Let's mov eon and focus on improving wikinews

Roxbury Mosque image, Is islamophobia the new anti-Semitism?[edit]

I obtained the Roxbury Mosque image from [1]. I asked ISB officials in the past when I used it in articles whether it was public domain, and I was told that it indeed was. I know of no such notice on their web site, but I could ask one of the ISB officials to send you an email to confirm the status of the image. ThorsProvoni 14:17, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Munchkinguy's picture[edit]

I had originally put a "Fair Use Publicity Photo" tag on it, but Bawolff left a message on my talkpage saying:

"we can't really say its fair use/publicity as its not in an article (Fair use/publicity only works for articles). Could you maybe just write on the page that its a picture of yourself and you allowing it to be here?"

So that's what I did. --Munchkinguy 20:31, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Confused the hell out of me when I picked up the top story in the audio brief and it continued into other stories. commons template[edit]

I noticed you were editing it with lots of edit summary's like "it isn';t working",I am not sure what your trying to do, but do you need any help? Bawolff 21:26, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to make it work with an optional second parameter, but it didn't seem to work so I had to settle for a "name=" parameter. Could you make it work with just {{{2}}}? It should work I think, maybe I just didn't look hard enough... anyway works now too and is explained. I ocasionally try to show some template skills but usually reach my limits pretty fast :-D

--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:30, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How's it look now (You need to purge the cache ( http://en.wikinews.org/w/title=template:commons&action=purge ) to make the template update if its included on its own page. Bawolff 21:34, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VOA News[edit]

Just so you know, news stories from VOA (Voice of America) are in the public domain and do not have to be changed, necessarily, to avoid copyvio. It took me a while to figure that out too :) DragonFire1024 21:29, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing that is copywritten on VOA is the images (90% of them because they are usually taken by the AP or something.) DragonFire1024 21:30, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is, I usually chage the wording from VOA sources just because to copy and past the whole article, looks cheesy. DragonFire1024 21:32, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Abu Ghraib[edit]

The new cat is singular, the articles you're adding reference multiple cases - plural. The cat may need renamed to cases --Brian McNeil / talk 21:54, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like the use of the word "affair", perhaps a category of Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse affair. The point is that "case" is inappropriate as each lawsuit against a different set of soldiers is a case and there are multiple cases then. Buuut, this is what tools like AWB are designed for. ;-) --Brian McNeil / talk 22:04, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My reporting ..[edit]

Mr. Steven Fruitsmaak,

I have a degree in writing from Emerson College. I have covered the Boston music scene for the last ten years. It is my belief this story is worthy 'Wikinews.' Mr. Cherone has struggled for many years and is finally recieving some much deserved recognition.

Sincerely,

James (Faruhk) Castle

Steven,

Yes, I did interview Mr. Cherone over the telephone. The second paragraph in the story is the 'boiler plate' info that ABLC's publicity honcho David Early supplied. He didn't want a credit, but asked that it be included.

Thanks for the feedback on my first story! Re: neurexin on chromosome 11 - I don't have subscription access to any journals. I tried to figure out where neurexin was, but didn't succeed. I saw several references to it on 11, but the abstract made me think it was elsewhere.

Your point about summarizing the previous research was well taken. That's one thing I'm definitely struggling with, how much background and context to include.

Dummy pages[edit]

re: Template:Ut They don't exist on Meta, so I don't see any need for pages like A b here.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 14:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Depends entirely on how much you hate redlinks, doesn't it? You may be correct, but I don't recall seeing that table containing redlinks on m:Help:Links. Well, 66.6:33.3, Meta apparently does have an 'a' page. My recollection is probably more from Wikipedia which has an w:b and an w:a b page too, albeit as a redirect page[2]. Shrug. I really have no dog in this hunt! Do tend to hate redlinks though! Cheers! // FrankB 05:42, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Problem is they appear in the news room as developing stories... if you decide to pursue, you should try to use a [ [ Cat:no publish ] ] or something to keep them from listing on that page.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:11, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Acknowledge... (Sorry about the delay, but I'm timeshared between sites right now! <g>) I can see that being something of a problem... I gather that's you're local equivalent of 'New Pages' on WP, which would certainly be much of great interest in a news site. Wp's new pages list is big on any day and I rarely patrol that. Has to be a low energy day in fact for me to do any browsing per se— I've simply too many projects tasks on the to-do list already keeping me up too late at night too often as it is! <G> Template:I2Anyway, I'm not looking to work 'Help' pages in any event in any big way... at least not until Mediawiki figures out whether they are taking that over, or whatnot, and make sure not to create any main space pages without checking with someone (I think you elected yourself there! <g>). Have enough on my plate, and wiki-time is getting tight again for me. // FrankB 20:19, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hi Steven. I appreciate you raising the block issue in my request for accreditation. I went back to re-word it because I thought I came across as too strong, only to find that I couldn't mellow my words. I wasn't aware of the Commons issue, and I was pointed to Wikinews by an admin at Wikimedia, so I was caught off guard by the cool reception. I basically felt the block (with no warning) proved my point that I didn't find WikiNews to be particularly inviting, but that's neither here nor there and not something I really want to get into. But thank you, nonetheless. Could you please remove my request from the page, though? I'd appreciate it. Sint Niklaas article[edit]

Any chance you could do some OR on this? Photo? Quote? There's contact information on http://www.sint-niklaas.be, there's an email address on the contact page and I suspect things will go a lot faster if you start in Dutch. If you get stuck, contact me on Skype - I can give you a phone number to either call me on or pass on to the commune to verify your credentials. Bear in mind that they'll expect any member of the press to have a card from the ministry of the Interior. You have to represent yourself as a citizen journalist when approaching people. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:40, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

Thanks. =) I've been simultaneously updating the article at the English Wikipedia, so I can put it up on In the News once it is of appropriate length. Nishkid64 21:46, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the Trophy[edit]

Dear friend, thanks a lot for the trophy; I appreciate it. :) Zorba 17:50, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note, cc-by-3.0 has not bbeen approved by commons yet. I'm sure it'd be fine, but just to be on the safe side you may want to dual license it under cc-by-2.5/cc-by-3.0. Bawolff 04:10, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mass wedding article[edit]

hi, great job on Mass wedding held against racism in Belgium. i have a couple of queries regarding how to word some bits of the article, which i've stated in html comments in the article itself. (3 queries, one in section "It started small" and two in "A positive signal against racism". can be seen in the edit tab, look for "<!--" ). could u pls take a moment to answer those. thanks! –Doldrums(talk) 04:16, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've posted about this article on Wikinews Reports. I was wondering if you have been able to access the blog? Do you want to write about "Belgian Archbishop lectures on health care and religion"? Remember, focus more on the process of reporting and results (for example who you interviewed, where, and under what circumstances), than the news article itself. -- Zanimum 18:32, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mainpage[edit]

Hey - I'm contacting you as I noticed that you were a currently online admin. The breaking news article on the mainpage currently states that "Iranian forces surround and later release sailors and marines after an inspection was performed by the British Royal Navy on a ship believed smuggling cars into Iraq." I am pretty certain they have not been released though, so it kind of needs an urgent change. Cheers. 80.175.130.133 19:40, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wotcha studing?[edit]

So you're at KUL? Which campus and what are you studying? I'm frequently in the area of the city centre campus as there's a Thai shop there. With my partner being Thai I have to put up with her having expensive taste in foods. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:26, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MP3 Players Sneak Up On Airwaves[edit]

how would i go about proving that I'm a student at WLU without revealing private information? And when I get my hands on my survey notes, ill have to take them somewhere to get them scanned before I can upload them.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Foxtrot85 (talkcontribs) 20:02, 29 March 2007

PREXCEL-Q press releases[edit]

Hi Steven,

Please check out the link: http://www.iastate.edu/~nscentral/news/2007/mar/gallup.shtml and the link: http://www.biologicalprocedures.com/bpo/general/home.htm and: http://76.162.25.80/bpo/arts/1/122/m122.htm and: qPCR.net

This is in response to your comment:

"I might be interested in interviewing you... however I'm currently busy with exams so I can't take time to read your article properly (for background). I might send you an email on Tuesday. My question to you for the moment is: have you submitted a manuscript about this software to a journal already? If there were an article published the story would be a lot more credible.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:28, 28 January 2007 (UTC)"

If you are still interested - please let me know - I would welcome an interview. I can be reached at Iowa State University, phone # 1-515-294-5844.

Many Thanks for your constructive criticism,

Congratulations[edit]

Congratulations on your mass wedding article making it to Featured. Keep stuff like this coming!

Incidentally, are you planning on going into the field you're studying or have you enjoyed Wikinews enough that you'd try and get a job writing news about the topic? I can imagine that would offer some interesting options (like travel and so). --Brian McNeil / talk 13:30, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
