Email Part IV

[edit]

No sir, not yet. I'll email him again, and try Mr. Wales' if i don't get a response soon. Thunderhead 15:24, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's very interesting indeed. I think that the developers could possibly set up a webmail.wikinews.org domain, allow local bureaucrats (or admins) to log in, and create accounts for the domain. That way, it could be handled by local projects, and allow users to have email accounts as nessesary. Of course, accounts could only be removed by trusted users, such as bureaucrats, etc. Thunderhead 02:49, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Writing competition

[edit]

I've stuck my name down for putting a 100 euro top prize in to a new writing competition to start after the elections. I know you'll be too busy to compete, but could you help out as a judge. I need some ideas on how we devise a points system, original research should get preferential treatment and so. It's over on the water cooler and there isn't a desperate rush to get the competition set up. I've also stuck out some feelers to see if we can get coverage in the Signpost or by other means on Wikipedia to draw in new contributors. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:27, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinewsie.org

[edit]

I got sick of waiting on the Foundation/Board reaching a decision on email addresses for accredited reporters. I now have Wikinewsie.org, and will be sending out email/password details to all active accredited reporters this evening.

I still have to explore all the other features I got in the package from GoDaddy, we have 100 email addresses limit, some sort of online filing, and a group calendaring thing. Hosting is on Linux, and I'm not sure what we can run there. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

About the Wikinews Bulletin

The Wikinews Bulletin is a free internal newsletter for members of the Wikinews community. The newsletter is "staffed" by several editors, who produce the fortnightly publication. The publication has produced six issues. To unsubscribe, click here, and remove your name. To subscribe, click here, and add a direct link to your talk page.

From the Editors

Welcome to the latest edition of the Wikinews Bulletin! This week, you may have noticed a slight change in the design. This was because I felt that as a different project, Wikinews should not copy the Wikipedia Signpost. If you disagree, be bold and make your opinion known on the talk page.
Thunderhead - (talk) 00:14, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

IRC Discussion
 • This fortnight, not much happened on IRC. There was a debate among DragonFire1024 and Wikimedia Foundaton intern Mike H., but that was about it.

 • The Polish Wikipedia on DVD has finally been released and is available for purchase in shops in Poland as well as online. The release contains 239 000 articles, 59 000 images and the dedicated Java software WikiMiner. The DVD costs 39 PLN (~ 10 EUR, $14). Soon the 8 GB image of the DVD will be available for download as well.

Wrong news

Hello Steven, I read that you are the main editor of this news. There’s something wrong: Mrs. Silvia Celeste was not a heart specialist - - she was Dr. Fabrizio Celeste’s wife instead and suffered of heart disfunction. The correct source is the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera at this URL: http://www.corriere.it/Primo_Piano/Cronache/2007/09_Settembre/03/cardiologa_italiana_muore%20_infarto.shtml . My accreditation and your doubts

[edit]

I'd like you to reconsider your vote and PMed you about it. I do hope that an up-to-date accreditation will -as opposed to the out-of-date accreditation on de.- allow for access to press conferences, starting with the upcoming Frankfurt International BookFair in October where all topics are handled and interview access to dignitaries and interesting authors of many countries is possible.

From the moment of my updated user page, which predated my request, I've started being more active than before on both en. and de.wikinews, preparing my own articles and contributing to those of others, which I intend to continue no matter what, but which, as I hope, also lends credibility to my request. --Gwyndon 20:24, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template design

[edit]

I think we need an internal navigation system so that when a user reads a story they aren't just at a "dead end" - I don't think consensus needs to be reached on how I design my own articles; however, I'm open to suggestion. You haven't particularly given any reason why you consider having the same navigation bar found on the front page on the stories to be "ugly". --David Shankbone 22:27, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lead Image

[edit]

Hi Steven - you updated the lead story, but I only updated it hours ago, whereas our other two main stories have been up for over a day. Any reason why you didn't update those? --David Shankbone 22:16, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

 • Although I think you're right, my concern is that the main three stories remain "fresh" to keep people returning to see what is news. Attention spans are short, and if the top three don't look particularly "new" then my concern is that people do not come back to visit, or delay returning because there isn't cause to do so. A "new look" with the top three is important. That's the root of my concern with switching the lead but leaving the other two "old news". Depending upon our productivity, that sometimes can't be helped. --David Shankbone 22:26, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, of course there are no rules, but we all have our own theories. I disagree with you about that lead being unfit. In the U.S. this group is very well known and loathed, and that they are getting their comeuppance is really news (internationally). They have over 1,000 articles written about this story on Google News. --David Shankbone 23:05, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I noticed your self-described "attempt at c/e" but what if that is how David Shankbone actually asked the question? I can see throwing in a comma between the words "history" and "doctrine" but changing the wording seems precarious. Just a thought. --SVTCobra 23:44, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm actually not all that concerned with some minor tinkering of wording in either the questions or the answers if it helps them to make sense. This is actually common in interviews. Care must be taken to ensure the meaning of questions or answers aren't changed, so I watch changes pretty closely knowing how the question was meant, received and answered. But editorial clean-up for grammar, spelling and to remove some awkward phrasing is not only fine, but encouraged. I often have interviewees tell me, "You made me sound smart!" --David Shankbone 23:50, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, OK, then. I had no idea, I thought interviews were like a transcript. --SVTCobra 23:54, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, actually mine are most like that, but I do editorial clean-up. I explain some of the interview issues on the collaboration page on the Merlino interview. This is why people often say they are misquoted, because the MSM whittles things down, doesn't record but "takes notes" on what is said, etc. By comparison, we are very accurate and we do very minor editing and changing of words. So, if you see something that sticks out to you as poorly stated or worded, and you understand what they are saying or what was asked, feel free to change it. --David Shankbone 23:59, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Good to know, as I was somewhat uncertain when I have been doing so. Thanks for the encouragement :) . Sean Heron 18:04, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Jokela killer screenshot youtube.jpg

[edit]

Is there any reason why this image is not used currently on articles? I think it should be added, at least to the first and second one (not today's one). --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:16, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the fair-use argument to be rather weak after the story ceases to be breaking news. Also, I am not sure who created that screen-shop off of YouTube, but it wasn't me, so the sourcing is a little shady. I have been told (and by the number of other versions that are floating around on the internet I also believe) that it is a screenshot off of YouTube, but I don't really know. I was actually thinking of deleting it. --SVTCobra 21:22, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
As a derivative of the original youtube video the copyright would likely belong to the estate of the shooter. Obviously, no one is going to get permission for use for that anytime soon. I'd be inclined to argue that this is exactly why fair use is allowed (it isn't clear to me whether this would fall within our fair use criteria). JoshuaZ 21:43, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess we could delete it, it's not being used and there's no need for it anymore now that it's no longer breaking news, although I think it is still good fair use.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:53, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Personally, I would like to never see this image or any other of him. Detaching myself from those feelings, I will say that the "youtube.com" that can be seen in this image's lower left is not that of a normal screen-shot from YouTube. This leads me to believe that this particlular version may be the work of someone else. Since it is still a screen-shot, I don't know if that gives them any rights at all, but we might be better off replacing it with the one they are using at Jokela school shooting. That image does not have the same text on it. Also, if there is a problem with it, we can say "well, we just imported it from Wikipedia assuming their fair-use rationale was good." That image is, btw, w:Image:Jokela-school-shooter.jpg. But like I said, I'd rather not look at his face again. --SVTCobra 04:59, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi, I realize that you are busy, but you confused me with this vote:

*support, this user has become inactive and shouldn't have admin rights, but I had no problem with him as a Wikinewsie, and I don't support this based on WN:IP, although I support that proposal. --Steven Fruitsmaak <small>(Reply)</small> 22:39, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

So, you like PVJ as a Wikinewsie, and you don't want to vote against him as part of WN:IP (although in the long run it is a policy which you support), but somehow despite these statements you support that he be de-admin'ed in a vote that has been termed 'a test of WN:IP'. Consider me confused. I am not running a campaign for PVJ, far from it, and I don't normally question other people's votes, but your added comments left me confused. In my opinion, one either supports the de-admin on WN:IP grounds or on being unfit for Admin, yet you say that PVJ is ok on both grounds, but still you voted to de-admin. --SVTCobra 03:07, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blog, interview thoughts

[edit]

Just wanted to tell you I´ve replied on my talk page regarding interviews. What I wanted to tell you though was that I posted what amounts to a Blog message on my Userpage, and Id be happy to see you (or anybody else) post it on the Wikinews blog on my behalf (Im afraid Im not going to get myself a gmail account just for that). Regards Sean Heron 11:37, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Reggie Bibbs Wiki Interview 112307.ogg

[edit]

I've uploaded it, but I had to shrink it a lot, and increase compression a lot to get it under the 20 mb limit (went from 153 megabytes to 18.86 megabytes). I'm thinking of maybe re-uploading as a 2 parter, as its quite small currently. Bawolff 03:13, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Guess which video got bigger. See IDF for all the parts. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bawolff (talkcontribs)

Email

[edit]

Thanks for remembering me for allowing email from wiki. BTW, note that my email is the only information which I left on my user page :) (yes, I know that I should make page a little bit better :) ) --millosh (talk) 22:52, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reggie Bibbs

[edit]

You are welcome! But I'll tell you, it is painstaking work to transcribe. I saw you ask Bawolff if an incomplete transcript would be ok. I hope so, because with the high-quality video now available, I think our readers are more likely to watch the videos than read the transcript. --SVTCobra 23:16, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think it would be OK. Especially, since Reggie is already publicizing that he did an interview with us. If anyone objects, the worst they can do is unpublish and push publication back some more, which is already the only alternative. --SVTCobra 23:26, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am not so sure about the appropriateness of the inclusion of the in-line link to Bertalan Meskó's blog. As it is, it is just one more click away if one clicks on his name. --SVTCobra 23:33, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I would consider date bumping to December 14 (in 10 or so minutes). We are nearly there and I think more people will see it that way. --SVTCobra 23:50, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Thanks for giving me information which allows me to improve my signature. Please be aware that Image:Anonymous101 has not been in my signature for several weeks and was only on 3 pages--User:Anonymous101 06:54, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Benazir Bhutto article

[edit]

I was on a temporary break; now that I'm back, I will complete it. But, yeah, I should have marked it while I was gone, I guess. Thanks for that template, though; I didn't realise we had an equivilant to Template:Inuse. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 19:59, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

My RfA

[edit]

I dunno if you do RfA thanks here, or if it's just a Wikipedia thing. If not, I reckon the trend needs broken. Many thanks for participating in my RfA, which was successful. Unfortunatly, I can't use the excuse of testing my shiny new buttons to see what they do as I have them on Wikipedia ;). So, I guess that rules out any rogue-adminish behaivour ;-). Seriously, though, cheers, and see you around on-wiki! Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 15:29, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Animated gif

[edit]

Hi Steven. I just wanted to say nice work on the image for the year-end article. Really excellent! Cheers, --Jcart1534 00:39, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Steven. I am glad to see you used one of my photos of Nicolas Sarkozy for this 2007 overview. Though, you misspelled my name; it's Paumier, not Paumiier. Could you please be kind enough to fix that? Thanks a lot, and best wishes. guillom 11:39, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just want to congradulate you on a brilliantly designed animated gif (left) with brilliant choice of images. It is so brilliant I had to include a small version of the animation by my comment. --User:Anonymous101 19:10, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Also wanted to add that the image is great. I was scrolling down the main page, saw the featured picture and took a double take. Bawolff 03:25, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot! guillom 11:34, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Accredits Wikinews Reporter

[edit]

Thanks for the response. I do have one question though, do live video broadcasts, such as those on C-Span, and government documents for examaple, count as original reporting if that is what I'm reporting on? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fatla00 (talkcontribs) 23:10, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for contacting me.

I just read the discussion on WN:administrators regarding de-admining, and just wanted to thank you for showing me the courtesy of emailing me to tell me about the vote. Cheers. ~The bellman | Smile 00:45, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

arbcom

[edit]

i'd like to nominate you for arbcom. would you be interested in taking part in the upcoming elections? –Doldrums(talk) 05:35, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

great! here you go (assuming it goes ahead) :) –Doldrums(talk) 22:52, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews:Arbitration Committee

[edit]

Hi Steven, thanks for the nod for ArbCom. You flatter me. But before I accept, there seems to be some question whether we should be having elections at this time. Please see the discussion at WN:AAA#Wikinews:Arbitration Committee. There were some efforts in the past to eliminate the staggered terms and have elections once a year, but for all seats. Depending on if we carry forward, we do need election coordinators, would you care to be one or even the chair? Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:36, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks
