[edit]

It would be helpful to have a usage note on this one. What goes in this category, what does not? Also, should it be part of both Category:India and Category:Pakistan?

I have added {{topic cat}}, together with a suggested usage note. Please modify as appropriate. Green Giant (talk) 14:36, 11 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
That isn't the solution to this question. Kashmiri is someone who is from Kashmir valley. Kashmiri is a language as well. There is a grey area -- I can't recall ever coming across a word for people from Jammu, as we have been using the word "Kashmiri" for them. And then, there is PoK. So someone from Pakistan can also be Kashmiri. Should we link Kashmir when we are speaking about someone from Kashmir? If yes, then which Kashmir? Should we link when we are talking about the Kashmiri language? There is a whole lot of confusion involved.

So, what’s your proposed wording? Green Giant (talk) 15:35, 11 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I don't know. There is so much politics involved that I can not decide for myself, and that is why it is flagged.

Why be so official about it? The point of a category is so readers can find what they want, and people don't always want things logically. How about "This category applies to the Kashmir valley, the people from this geographic area, and the Kashmiri language." Do we have so many Kashmir articles that we need separate categories for all three or would a reader who clicks on CAT:KASHMIR quickly see what they want? As presented, this is a geocat, about an intermediate-sized region. A bit like Category:Korean Peninsula, but tricky because this one isn't a neat grouping of countries. Supposing we continue to treat it as a geocat, neither India nor Pakistan would belong to it because neither of those countries is entirely contained within it. Our geocats have always contained everything in the region; but whether this is a true geocat — that, it would seem, is the question. If it's a true geocat, it should contain (according to en.wp) everything in Jammu and Kashmir, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Aksai Chin, and the Trans-Karakoram Tract. We've struggled with how to categorize just those articles related to a larger area as a whole, but it's a can of worms and we've never come up with a straightforward solution. --Pi zero (talk) 11:50, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
At the very least the description should include China, since Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract are administered by China; so there's three countries involved. Cheers, --SVTCobra 12:24, 19 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm uncomfortable with a category whose name sounds like a region but whose usage note presents it as issue-driven. Seemingly either it should be a straight union of the areas that make it up, or it should have a different name. A question that arises is, how many articles are at stake, either way; another is, what would be really good name for it if we take that route. --Pi zero (talk) 19:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I had to see what we did for Kurdistan. But I wonder, how about Somaliland? Maybe we can look at what we did for Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza too?

I've just looked, via DPL, at all articles in Category:Kashmir but not any of its subregions with en.wn categories (Jammu and Kashmir, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan). Most of the ones I found should have been in Jammu and Kashmir, so I added them. That left just one article, India and China to develop friendly relations, which mentions 38,000 square kilometres of Kashmir held by China and claimed by India. Since part of that 38,000 is Aksai Chin, and I'd already noted, via string-search, two articles that could belong to a Category:Aksai Chin, maybe we have a justification for that additional subcat. At which point Category:Kashmir would not contain any articles not in any of its subcats. --Pi zero (talk) 23:46, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
